The frt was ruled by many rulers f varius dynasties wh als built many palaces and temples inside the frt. The cmbined frces f Rani Lakshmi Bai and Tatya Tpe als fught here against the British. Gwalir Gwalir district is situated in Madhya Pradesh state f India. The city, situated nearby Agra, has many msques, palaces, temples and ther structures. Tmars, Mughals, Marathas, and Scindias ruled the city in different perids. The city has ht subtrpical climate frm March t June, ht and humid climate frm July t Octber and winter frm Nvember t February. 3

6 2. Gwalir Frt Histry Gwalir Frt Accrding t a legend, Gwalir was nce ruled by a king named Suraj Sen. A time came when he was suffering frm leprsy which was incurable. A sage named Gwalipa gave him water frm a sacred pnd which cured his disease. In rder t hnur the sage, the king cnstructed the frt. The king gt the title f Pal frm the sage and a bn that the frt will be in his pssessin and the generatins t cme. Histry says that 83 generatins f the king successfully ruled frm this frt but the king f 84 th generatin named Tej Karan culd nt prtect the frt and lst it. Gwalir Frt frm 6 th Century t 13 th Century There are inscriptins in the frt which date back t sixth century and indicate that the frt may have been cnstructed in thse times. Mihirakula, a Huna emperr, built a sun temple here. In 9 th century, Teli ka Mandir was built by the rulers f Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty. In 10 th century, Kachchhapghatas cntrlled the frt. These peple wrked under the leadership f Chandelas. In 11 th century, Muslim dynasties began attacking the frt. Mahmud f Ghazni attacked the frt in 1022AD. Qutubuddin Aibak captured the frt in 1196AD and annexed it t Delhi Sultanate. Thugh the sultanate lst the frt but was again captured by Iltumish Gwalir Fr in 14 th Century and Further Tmar Rajputs captured the frt in Maan Singh was ne f the famus Tmar Rajput wh built many mnuments inside the frt. Sikandar Ldi attacked the frt in 1505 but culd nt capture it. His sn Ibrahim Ldi attacked the frt in In this attack, Maan Singh was killed and after a lng siege Rajputs surrendered. Mughals captured the frt but lst it t Suris. In 1542, Akbar again captured the frt and made it a prisn. He executed his cusin Kamran in the frt. Aurungzeb als killed 5

The British gave the frt t the Ranas f Ghad in Marathas again captured the frt in This time due t the hstility f Ranas f Ghad, British cannt capture the frt. The frt is spread in an area f 3km and is built at a height f 35 feet. There are tw gates t enter the frt. One f them is Hathi Pl r elephant gate and ther ne is Badalgarh gate. Elephant gate is the main entrance t the frt. Many temples are there which are still in use. They are as fllws: Siddhachal Jain Temple Caves Siddhachal Jain Temple Caves was built during the perid f 7 th and 15 th century. There are 32 Jain temples in the frt ut f which eleven are dedicated t the Jain Tirthankaras. The remaining nes are situated in suth f the frt. Rishabhanath r Adinath was the first Jain Tirthankara and his idl is the tallest ne as its height is 58 feet 4 inch r 17.78m. Urvashi Temple Urvashi is a temple in the frt that cnsists f many idls f tirthankaras sitting in varius pstures. There are 24 idls f Jain Tirthankaras sitting in the psture f padamasana. Anther grup f 40 idls are sitting in the psitin f kaytsarga. The number f idls carved in the walls are 840. Gpachal Gpachal is a hill which cnsists f 1500 idls. The size f these idls range frm 6 inches t 57 feet. The perid f carving these rck-cut idls is between 1341 and One f the largest idls is f Bhagwan Parsvanath whse height is 42feet and width is 30 feet. 7

9 Gwalir Frt Teli ka Mandir Teli ka mandir r ilman s temple is said t have been built in 8 th r 11 th century and was renvated in 19 th century. The temple includes nrth and suth Indian architectural styles. The temple was built in rectangular shape and peple can enter the temple thrugh a staircase. 8

Sas Bahu Temple King Mahipal f Kachchhapaghata dynasty built Sas Bahu temple als knwn as Sahastrabahu temple. The area cvered by the temple is 32m x 22m. Devtees can enter the temple thrugh three gates lcated in three different directins. 12 4. Gwalir Frt Palaces Gwalir Frt There are many palaces in the frt which are as fllws: Man Mandir Palace Man Mandir palace was built by Raja Man Singh between 1486AD and 1517AD. The exterir f the palace was decrated with tiles and the walls include carvings f ducks flating in water. There were large rms which served as a music rm fr ryal wmen. During the Mughal perid, prisners were imprisned in undergrund dungen. During the Rajput perid, the wmenflk perfrmed jauhar in a jauhar pnd during an attack r invasin. Turists can g t the palace thrugh the elephant gate r Hathi Pl. Karan Mahal Kirti Singh built this palace in the frt. He was the secnd king f Tmar dynasty. Karan Singh was anther name f Kirti Singh and s the palace was named as Karan Mahal. 11

15 5. Gwalir Frt Other Mnuments Gwalir Frt There are many ther mnuments in the frt which are as fllws: Hathi Pl Hathi Pl r elephant gate is the main gate thrugh which turists can enter the frt. This gate als leads t the Man Mandir Palace. The gate is lcated at the suth-eastern part f the frt. The gate is named as hathi pl due t the huge statue f an elephant which adrned the gate. Stne has been used t build the gate. The gate has cylindrical twers and cupla dmes which are linked by carved parapets. Chhatri f Bhim Singh Rana Bhim Singh Rana belnged t Ghad state and als ruled Gwalir frm He captured Gwalir when Mughal Gvernr Ali Khan surrendered. Bhim Singh als built a lake named Bhimtal in the frt. The chhatri f Bhim Singh Rana was built by his sn and successr Chhatra Singh near the bhimtal. On the ccasin f Ram Navami, Jat Samaj Kalyan Parishad rganizes a fair every year. Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhr Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhr was a wrship place where Guru Hargbind Singh, the sixth Sikh Guru, used t pray. After Guru Arjun Dev, he was made the sikh guru. Guru Hargbind Singh raised an army t fight the cruelty at that time. He als prvided justice 14

When the wife f Jahangir came t knw abut the illness f Jahangir, she summned Sain Mian Mir ji wh tld that a hly man has been captured s the health f the emperr is declining. When emperr came t knw this he rdered the release f the guru. The guru tld that he will nly leave if 52 ther Rajput rulers will als be released. His tmb was built during the reign f Akbar. The tmb is ne kilmetre away frm Gwalir Frt. The tmb has a large dme n the tp and a large rm where the saint is buried. The rm is surrunded by a veranda like structure having jaalis. The dme has been placed n a rectangular base having fur chhatris. Jai Vilas Palace Jai Vilas Palace was built by Jayaji Ra Scindia in The cst f building the palace was arund Rs 1 crre. The palace was built n the basis f Eurpean architecture and is still the residence f Scindia family. There is a large darbar hall in the palace which is furnished with gilt and gld. The chandeliers in the palace weigh 3.5 tnnes and are placed at the height f 12.5m. 18

22 Gwalir Frt Tmb f Khwaja Kann Sahib The full name f Khwaja Kann sahib was Saiyed Saiyeeduddin Kann Rehmat Ullah Aleh Chishtiya. He came t Gwalir frm Marwar in 1481AD and died in 1533AD. The tmb has tw dmes and each stands n a rectangular base. There are three entrances and a beautiful garden in frnt f the tmb. 21
