6 2. Amer Frt Histry Amer Frt Amer under Meenas Amer Frt is situated in the Amer twn which is at the distance f 11 km frm Jaipur. The Amer twn was firstly ccupied and administered by Meenas. As they wrshipped Gddess Amba, s n that basis they named the place as Amer r Amber. Gddess Amba was als knwn as Gatta Rani r Queen f Pass. Histry says that Amer twn was previusly knwn as Khgng which was ruled by Raja Ratun Singh r Alan Singh Chanda. Amer under Kachwahas Kachwahas are said t be the descendants f Kush, the secnd sn f Lrd Rama. One f the descendants f Kush was Raja Nal wh settled in Nurwar. Raja Sra Singh was the descendant f Raja Nal wh was killed and his sn Dhla Rae was deprived f inheritance. As Dhla Rae was an infant, his mther felt that the usurper may kill her and the child s she put the child in a basket and reached near Khgng which was ruled by Meenas. Being hungry she was plucking wild berries. Seeing a snake near the basket she screamed but a Brahmin saw and tld that the baby has a very bright future. He tk her t Khgng where she asked the king t give her sme emplyment fr survival. The queen included her in her slaves. One day, as per the rder, she cked fd which was liked by the king. When he listened her stry, he adpted her as sister and Dhla Rae as his nephew. Dhla Rae was sent t Delhi at the age f 14 and he returned after five years. The Kachwaha Rajputs returned with Dhla Rae and as per their cnspiracy, they killed many f the ryal peple and the public during the celebratin f Diwali festival. In this way, the Kachwahas vertk the twn frm the Meenas. The first king f the Kachwahas was Raja Kakil Dev wh made Amer twn his capital in 1036AD. The cnstructin f the frt was started by Raja Man Singh in 967AD and was expanded by Raja Jai Singh I. The frt was imprved by many ther rulers wh succeeded Jai Singh I. Jai Singh II shifted his capital frm Amer twn t Jaipur. Raja Jai Singh I and II Jai Singh I and Man Singh started the cnstructin f Amer Frt. Jai Singh I als was the cmmanding fficer f Mughal army and fught many battles fr Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurungzeb. After Jai Singh I, three mre rulers succeeded him. After that Raja Jai Singh II succeeded and he als impressed Aurungzeb. Due t this, Aurungzeb gave him the title f Sawai which means ne and a quarter. 5

7 Amer Frt Since he has clse bnds with the Mughals, s he started the cnstructin f his dream city Jaipur with the help f Vidyadhar Bhattacharya. The city was divided int seven blcks having buildings and trees. There were high walls having ten gates t enter the city. The placement f shps was divided int nine sectrs called chkris. 8 Amer Frt 3. Amer Frt Architecture and Design There are fur divisins f the Amer frt and each divisin is knwn as curtyard. All the sectins have a gate t make an entry. The main entrance f the frt is thrugh Suraj Pl r Sun Gate as it faces east. Sawai Jai Singh II built this gate. First Curtyard The first curtyard is called Jalebi Chwk r Jaleb Chwk. Here the armies held victry parades under the cmmander called Fauj Bakshi and Ryal families view it. There were stables fr hrses and rms fr the sldiers. Ganesh Pl is anther gate which led t the palaces f maharajas. There is a Suhag Mandir abve the gate where ryal ladies used t wrship. Sila Devi Temple Sila Devi Temple is situated n the right side f Jalebi Chwk. Legends say that Sila Devi was the incarnatin f Gddess Kali. There is a duble dr entrance t the temple cvered with silver. The deity is surrunded by tw lins ne n left and ne n right and bth lins are als cvered with silver. The entrance has a carving f Lrd Ganesh which is made up f single piece f cral. 7

9 Amer Frt Animal sacrifice was a trend during Navratri in which buffales and gats were sacrificed n the eighth day. The sacrifice was given in frnt f the ryal families and the devtees used t watch. This practice was banned in 1975 and sacrifice was dne nly in frnt f ryal peple. The sacrifice is ttally banned nw and nly vegetarian fd is ffered t the gddess. Secnd Curtyard There is a stairway frm the first curtyard which leads t secnd curtyard where Diwane-Aam r the public hall was cnstructed. There are 27 evenly divided clumns situated n a raised platfrm each having an elephant-shaped capital. 8

11 Amer Frt Third Curtyard The turists can enter the third curtyard thrugh Ganesh Pl. This was the curtyard where ryal families and their attendants used t live. Ganesh Pl is cvered with msaic and there are many sculptures engraved n it. Jai Mandir and Sukh Niwas are the tw buildings cnstructed n this curtyard. Between these tw buildings there is a garden built in the same way as Mughal Gardens. Jai Mandir Jai Mandir has ceilings with cnvex-shaped multiple mirrrs. These mirrrs are made clurful s that they can glitter due t candle light at night. That s the reasn that Jai Mandir is als knwn as Sheesh Mahal built by Raja Man Singh which was cmpleted in Sukh Niwas Sukh Niwas is als knwn as Sukh Mahal whse entrance is a sandalwd dr. The palace was made cl thrugh pipes with water supply which prduced an air-cnditined envirnment. 10

They have t partially hide the panel in rder t see the designs. Man Singh I Palace Man Singh I Palace was cmpleted in 1599 during the reign f Man Singh I. It tk arund 25 years t build the palace. There is a pavilin in the centre f the palace called baradari. Alng with this, there are clurful tiles fr decrating the rms. There are small rms surrunding the pavilin each having a balcny. Garden The garden was built by Raja Jai Singh I wh ruled frm 1623 t The cnstructin f the garden was based upn the Mughal garden. The garden is made in hexagnal shape 11

The garden was watered frm the channels f Sukh Niwas and channels frm the rf f Jai Mandir. The channels that riginated frm Jai Mandir were called Chini Khana Niches. Triplia Gate Triplia Gate is a gate which prvides entrance t the frt frm the west. Since the dr pens in three directins, it is called triplia gate. The three directins include Jalebi Chwk, Man Singh Palace, and Zenana Derhi. Lin Gate The lin gate r singh pl led t the private apartments in the frt premises. The gate was named s because f its strength. The gate has fresces n its uter side. The gate was guarded by the defenders s that the invaders culd nt reach the palaces. Furth Curtyard This is the curtyard in which ryal ladies and their attendants resided. There were many rms fr the mther and wives f the king. 14 Amer Frt Jas Mandir Jas Mandir is situated in the furth curtyard fr ryal wmen t wrship. The temple has flral glass inlays. The temple was built n the upper part f diwan-e-khas. The flral designs with glass in them were used t decrate the temple. These glasses were imprted frm Belgium. 13

18 Amer Frt The frt was built by Sawai Jai Singh II in Sawai Ram Singh extended the frt in 1868 while Sawai Madh Singh built many palaces between 1883 and Jagat Shirmani Temple Jagat Shirmani Temple is situated in Amer where Meera Bai, Sri Krishna, and Lrd Vishnu are wrshipped. Queen Kankawati was the wife f Raja Man Singh I and she built this temple between 1599 and 1608 AD. The distance between the temple and Amer Frt is 0.4km. 17

19 Amer Frt Panna Meena ka Kund Panna Meena ka Kund als knwn as Panna Mian ki Bari r Panna Mian ka Kund. It is lcated at the distance f 0.6km frm Amer Frt. The kund is lcated near Ankhi Museum. 18
