The frt has many palaces, temples, twers and ther structures built by many Rajput rulers. The frt was attacked by many rulers like the kings f Gujarat Sultanate, Delhi Sultanate, and Mughal Dynasty. Currently the frt has becme UNESCO Wrld Heritage site and it was included in the list in 2013 by Wrld Heritage Cmmittee. Chittrgarh Chittrgarh is situated n the banks f Berach and Gambhiri rivers. It was the capital f Sisdia Rajputs. The twn was attacked thrice and the ladies f the Rajput rulers perfrmed Jauhar in rder t save themselves frm enemies. The Rajputs that ruled Chittrgarh believed in sacrificing their lives rather than surrendering t the enemy. Previusly the name f the twn was Chitrakut when it was under the Mri dynasty. Later n, Bappa Rawal vertk the kingdm and funded the kingdm f Mewar. Anther legend says that Bappa Rawal gt this twn as a dwry frm the last ruler f Slanki dynasty after marriage. The warrirs fught the enemy bravely while the wmen perfrmed jauhar s that they cannt be taken away by the enemy. Ancient Histry f Chittrgarh There are many legends related t Chittrgarh. Sme f them say that Chittrgarh was previusly called Chitrakut and was ruled by Mris while the ther say that Chitraranga built the frt and s was named Chittrgarh. There is als a legend in which it is stated that Bhima, brther f Yudhishthir, struck the grund which became a large reservir f water and nw it is called Bhimlat Kund. Bappa Rawal Legends say that Bappa Rawal was a Guhila ruler wh either captured the frt r gt it in dwry. It is als said that Mris were defeated by Arabs and then Bappa Rawal defeated the Arabs and captured the frt. Alauddin Khilji Alauddin Khilji attacked the frt in 1303AD in rder t capture Rani Padmini wh was very beautiful. She was the wife f Rana Ratan Singh. Thugh Rana shwed her t Alauddin Khilji in the mirrrs but he still wanted t capture her. Rana was captured by the Khilji wh gave a prpsal that Rana will be released if rani cmes t his harem. Rather than ging t the harem, rani sent 700 sldiers wh rescued the rana but were defeated in the battle that as fught near the frt. Rana was killed in that battle and Rani 5

In his time, the kingdm f Mewar grew in wealth and prsperity and his dynasty came t be knwn as Sisdia dynasty. Ketra Singh succeeded Hammir Singh in 1364 and he was succeeded by Lakha Singh in Rana Kumbha was the grandsn f Lakha Singh and he tk up the thrne in Rana Kumbha Rana Kumbha was the sn f Rana Mkal and he reigned frm 1433 t During his reign, he built arund 32 frts in rder t secure his kingdm. One f his frts is Kumbalgarh that is built near Udaipur. Rana Kumbha was killed by his sn Rana Udaysimha t gain the thrne. Rana Udaysimha and Rana Raimal Rana Udaysimha, als knwn as Rana Udai Singh I, attained the thrne in 1468 by killing his father but the assassinatin was nt liked by the peple s Rana Raimal attained the thrne in Rana Raimal died in Rana Sanga Rana Raimal was succeeded by Rana Sanga wh was his yungest sn. Rana Sanga, als knwn as Sangram Singh, elevated the prsperity and pride f Chittr and Mewar. He defeated the Gujarat rulers and Ibrahim Ldi. 6

The death f Rana Sanga led t the decline f Rajputs and the frt was besieged by many rulers. Bahadur Shah Bahadur Shah was the ruler f Gujarat wh attacked the frt in Due t the attack, arund 13,000 wmen perfrmed jauhar and arund 3,200 Rajputs went fr fighting. Rana Udai Singh and Panna Dhai escaped frm the frt and went t Bundi. Akbar Akbar attacked the frt in 1567 during the reign f Rana Udai Singh II. Shakti Singh went t Akbar after quarrelling his father. But when he came t knw that Akbar was planning t attack Chittrgarh, he returned back and infrmed his father abut it. After knwing this, Rana Udai Singh hid himself in the hills f Udaipur while Jaimal and Patta defended the frt but were killed in the battle which was fught fr fur mnths. 7

9 3. Chittrgarh Frt Architecture Chittrgarh Frt Chittrgarh frt is spread in an area f 700 acres. It has been made in the shape f a large fish and its circumference is 13km. The frt is built n the banks f Gambhri River and a limestne bridge has t be crssed in rder t enter the frt. The frt was built n the basis f Hindu architecture thugh ideas like vaulted substructures belng t Muslim architecture. The temples related t Hindus and Jains built inside the frt are Kumbha Shyam Temple Mira Bai Temple Adi Varah Temple Shringar Chauri Temple Sattaes Devri SatBis Devri There are tw twers which are the ther Jain mnuments and these are Kirti Stambh and Vijay Stambh. Palaces Rana Kumbha Palace can be accessed frm seventh gate. Rana Ratan Singh Palace was cnstructed in 19 th and 20 th century. Fateh Prakash Palace is als there which has been cnverted int a museum. 9

11 4. Chittrgarh Frt Gates Chittrgarh Frt The Chittrgarh frt has seven gates ut f which ne was built in fifth century and rest were built in 15 th century. Ram Pl is the main gate t enter the frt. The gates were made in such a way that they prvide full security t the frt frm invasin. They were built with heavy stnes and pinted arches. The arches were pinted s that the elephants f the enemy cannt push the gates. They als prtected the gate frm cannns. Alng with these, there are parapets fr the archers t sht arrws. Padan Pl is the gate where Prince Bagh Singh was killed in 1535 while Jaimal was killed between Bhairn Pl and Hanuman Pl. In the cmmemratin f the death f Jaimal, chhatris and statues were made. A centaph has als been built in which a statue f Jaimal sitting n a hrse has been built. A chhatri fr Patta has als been made at Ram Pl in his cmmemratin. Jdala Pl is the cmbinatin f tw gates. The arches f the gate is cnnected t the base f the Laxman Pl. Padan Pl Padan Pl is the first gate f the frt and its name is derived frm the Rajasthani wrd Patwi which means eldest r first. There is a legend which says that after Alauddin Khilji made a siege, a buffal kid named pada was brught dwn with frce s it was named padan pl. 10

Bagh Singh was the grandsn f Rana Mkal and was killed during a war with Bahadur Shah, king f Gujarat Sultanate. Bhairn Pl Bhairn Pl is the secnd gate f the frt and the statue f Lrd Bhairn is situated nearby. It was renamed as Fateh Pl as Maharana Fateh Singh rebuilt it. It has als been said that Bhairn Das was a sldier wh was killed while fighting with the frces f Bahadur Shah hence the gate was named as Bhairn Pl. Jaimal and Patta were killed between Bhairn Pl and Hanuman Pl. Hanuman Pl and Ganesh Pl Hanuman Pl is the third gate f the frt and is named s due t the cnstructin f Hanuman temple nearby. Ganesh Pl is the furth gate where a temple f Lrd Ganesh is situated. The temple is very ld and beautiful. Jdala Pl, Laxman Pl, and Ram Pl Jdala Pl is the fifth gate f the frt and since it is cnnected with the sixth pl s it was named as jdala pl. Between this and the Ganesh pl there is a mnument f eklingnath. Laxman Pl is the sixth gate t which a turist can reach after a sharp turn frm jdala Pl. Near t Laxman Pl there is a temple fr Lrd Laxman. Ram Pl is the seventh gate and it is named s as the ancestrs f the kings f Mewar were the descendants f Lrd Rama. 11

13 5. Chittrgarh Frt Temples Chittrgarh Frt Many Jain and Hindu temples were cnstructed in this frt by different rulers. Mst f them have been ruined. Sme f the temples in the frt are as fllws Bhagwan Mahaveer Temple Chandra Prabhu Jinalaya r Bhagwan Mahaveer temple was cnstructed in 1167AD. The main twer f this temple is Kirti Stambh that was built by Jeeja Bhagerwala during the reign f Bappa Rawal. The height f the seven-streyed twer is 75 feet. The diameter f the base is 30 feet while the diameter f the tp is 15 feet. The digambara-style fur statues f Bhagwan Adinath are built n the uter wall f the twer. Each statue has the height f 25 feet. Bhagwan Parshvnath and Bahgwan Adinath Temples The Bhagwan Parshvanath Temple was cnstructed in 1322 near Gaumukhi Kund. The temple is als knwn as Chmukhi temple as the temple has fur faces. The temple was cnstructed by Jaytalla Devi wh was the wife f Rana Tej Singh. Bhagwan Adinath Temple is cnsidered as the largest Jain temple in the frt. It is said that due t the cnstructin f 27 temples nearby, the place came t be knwn as Sattavish Devri. Kalika Mata Temple Kalika Mata Temple is a Hindu Temple built in the 14 th century. Legends say that previusly it was the temple f Sun Gd that was cnstructed near the Padmini Palace in 8 th century. There is a Shiva Temple inside the Kalika Mata Temple cmplex and is called as Jageshwar Mahadev temple. Tulja Bhavani Temple Tulja Bhavani Temple was built t wrship the gddess named Tulja Bhavani which is anther frm f Gddess Durga. This temple was cnstructed in16th century and is lcated near Ram Pl. Kumbha Shyam Temple Kumbha Shyam temple was built by Rana Kumbha n the request f his wife Meera Bai as she dedicatedly wrshipped Lrd Vishnu. There is a chhatri which she dedicated t Swami Ravidas als knwn as Swami Raidas. Accrding t a legend, a demn named Hiranyakasha stle the Mther Earth and hid himself in primeval water. T rescue the Mther Earth, Lrd Vishnu tk the frm f a bar called Varaha in which the bdy was f human and the head was f a bar. The idl f Varaha is installed in the temple. The cnstructin f the temple is based n Ind-Aryan architecture. The temple cnsists f ardha mandapa (half prch), mandapa (full prch), antarala (interir cmpartment, and garbhagriha (private chamber). The inner walls are decrated with the sculptures f Hindu Gds. Meera Bai Temple Meera Bai temple is situated t the right side f the Ram Pl where she wrshipped Lrd Krishna. Nagchandreshwar Mahadev Temple Nagchandreshwar Mahadev Temple is a temple f Lrd Shiva situated beside Rani Padmmini s Palace. There is a garden situated n the right side f the temple. Fateh Prakash Palace Fateh Prakash Palace which was built by Rana Fateh Singh has nw been cnverted int a museum. This palace has a large idl f Lrd Ganesh alng with frescs and a funtain.
