2 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Notes July 29, 2018 THE BREAD OF LIFE Since 1970 the Church has organized the Sunday scripture readings in a three-year cycle with each year featuring the gospel of either Ma hew, Mark or Luke. Since Advent 2017 the Gospel of Mark has been at the forefront of our Sunday scripture readings; however, for the next several weeks, the Church will reflect upon the 6th chapter of John, which is frequently referred to as "the Bread of Life" discourse. In John 6, Jesus addresses the crowd which has followed him into a deserted place in order to hear His preaching. Recognizing the hunger of the crowd, Jesus performs the miracle of the mul plica on of the loaves and fish in order to provide earthly food to sa sfy their hunger. Our Lord then resumes preaching and iden fies Himself as "the Bread of Life". More than any empty feeling our stomachs may experience, there is a yearning in our hearts and souls for God. Jesus is the one who can sa sfy the emp ness by filling us with His life and presence. Perhaps over the coming week we might pray and iden fy what we are yearning for in our lives, and place ourselves with our deepest hunger before the Lord. SIMBANG GABI AT ST. 7 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, July 29, 2018 Why Youth Group? Hello high school students and parents, I hope you are excited for the youth group that is star ng up here at St. Raphael this coming school year. I would like to share with you what youth group is, how it can help you grow, and how it can foster community. A church youth group is a group of students who come together to grow in friendship with Christ and others, knowledge of our faith, and service to the community. In youth group, we not only take the me to learn about our faith and others, but we are also able to grow in rela onship. We cul vate a sense of iden ty and belonging. In a ending youth group, we can grow in community. We are be er able to serve others because we invested me in ge ng to know them. For me personally, there are many things that I have learned from my high school youth group. Three things in par cular that stand out to me are a deeper love for Jesus Christ and His Church, my friendships, and a desire to serve. I would not be who I am today without the experiences I had in my youth group. During August, watch the bulle n for details about our start date in September.
