2 St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church Bulletin Published Weekly Page 2 This week s readings: March 4, 2012 First Reading: Genesis 22: 1-2, 9a, 10-13, Second Reading: Romans 8: 31b-34 Gospel: Mark 9: nd Sunday of Lent March 4, 2012 Next week s readings: March 11, 2012 First Reading: Exodus 17: 3-7 Second Reading: Romans 5 1-2, 5-8 Gospel: John 4: 5-42 Brothers and sisters in Christ: This second Sunday of Lent this year has Abraham being asked by God to sacrifice Isaac, his son while the gospel narrates to us the Transfiguration event. One reflection declares that both occasions tell us how God assures Abraham and Jesus Christ that He loves them. God showed His love to Abraham by restraining him not to kill Isaac, and to Jesus Christ, He calls Him His beloved. This is for us an inspiration and a confirmation that God loves us. The reflection exhorts the readers further that we should take this seriously, and take God seriously. He is not toying with us. Everything He promised, He will fulfill. As we continue with our Lenten journey, one thing that we could probably reflect upon is how serious we are with God and His words. It is very obvious in our lives that we do not hold the reins, that we are not totally in control of everything, and we are not really sure of the future. One moment, our lives are convenient, and then suddenly, it is not! Everything seems to be working well then all of a sudden something unexpected happens. Many times we wish that our undisturbed life will remain forever but we realize that it is short-lived. So we question God s wisdom, and His ways? Abraham probably had the same problem with God. He could have question God why after giving him his aspiration that is Isaac, would ask him to sacrifice and kill him only at the end? Or Peter suggesting to Jesus why should He need to continue to Jerusalem to die when they could just have enjoyed Mount Tabor experience? We have similar situations and questions that we go through everyday too. But again, today s readings are telling us that God loves us in the midst of these uncertainties. This is the reason why Abraham is called the Father of Faith because He believed and trusted God. Was his faith a blind faith? Of course not! He had already a previous experience of God s trustworthiness when God gave him Isaac in spite of the natural impossibility for him and Sarah to bear a child. His faith was not blind. Likewise for all of us, brothers and sisters, I am sure we can recall a lot of things that happened in our lives that evidenced God s love for us. Can you say that your faith in God is blind? Saint Charles Parish is currently in a transition period. We are not sure of her future. But God loves Saint Charles. Does your faith affirm you this? I think this will be good to bear in mind for the next weekend when our parish will have her Lenten retreat. Let our annual desert or wilderness experience lead us to continue to trust in the wisdom and ways of God. Since Lent started, these thoughts are hanging in my mind when life seems not fair, when things aren t going our ways, when we feel betrayed, disappointed, and maybe angry, do we become less grateful, generous, and prayerful? Do we need to be less concerned to the needs of the least of our brethren? Do we disregard our call to take care of our parish community? Do we set aside our calling and our Christian dignity? Satan is always waiting for the opportune time to strike. He used Peter at Mount Tabor to tempt our Lord. He will never stop. He will try again in the garden of Olives. He will try and try again as we continue in our pilgrim way. He will continue to convince us that God does not love us; that He doesn t care about us. Our weapons that we have access to are PRAYER, FASTING, AND ALMSGIVING. Our Lenten journey culminates with Easter. May the Easter glory keep us moving forward! May Christ imminent victory compel us to not dismay but to be full of hope! May the least of our brothers and sisters who are always depending on our generosity make us look beyond our constant and daily dying to ourselves that our sacrifices give life to others in the way that Christ s Paschal Mystery gave life to the world. Amen. GOD IS WITH US! Fr. Gus

Church Humor...Dad in charge The young dad loved spending time with his baby daughter, but he often turned to his wife for advice. His wife was taking a shower one day when he poked his head in and asked, What should I feed Isabella for lunch? That s up to you, she replied. There s all kinds of healthy food in the frig and pantry. Why don t you just pretend I m not at home? The dad went back downstairs. A few minutes later, while the wife was drying off, her cell phone rang. She answered it to hear her husband on the other end say, Hi, honey. What should I feed Isabella for lunch? For those who have yearly requests for a mass, please submit your $10 donation after it has been published in the bulletin. Thanks! Dear St. Charles parishioners: Thank you for all of the kind birthday wishes, cards, and gifts. It is not possible to thank you individually, but I want you to know that I appreciate them very much. It has been a difficult past month for me, trying to determine where I will be moving after these many years at St. Charles. You have been my family, and I have so many great memories to cherish of my time at St. Charles. Currently, it looks like Tinkerbelle and I will be moving over to Heritage Estates in Livermore. I will be keeping my same cell phone number ( ) and once I have moved in, I would welcome visits or calls. The people of St. Charles will always be in my prayers. God bless you all. ~~Father Richard Pre-Baptism Class for Parents (and Godparents) The next class for parents wishing to have their children baptized at St. Charles will be held on Sunday, March 18th at 11:00AM. You must register for this class by 5PM on March 14th. It will be lead by Deacon Gil. Call Janie at the rectory office to sign up.

5 2nd Sunday of Lent March 4, 2012 Page 5 Lenten Collections. One of our traditions at St. Charles is the Lenten Collection sponsored by Social Concerns. We collect for a different group each of the six Sundays of Lent and on Holy Thursday. The Lenten Collections flyer (included in your February 19 th bulletin) has the full schedule and specific wish lists for each of the groups we are supporting. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated. Simply bring your donations to Mass each week and a representative from Social Concerns will be out front to accept it. Choose the option that works best for you: Donate goods each week from the Lenten Collections flyer wish list. Donate via check made payable to St. Charles and designate Lenten Collection or agency in the memo. Donate via your tithing envelope and place in the regular collection basket during Mass. (Be sure to write Lenten Collection on the Other line along with the amount you want to designate.) Donate via checks made payable to the specific groups you want to support. Donate cash. Note: Cash, and checks made payable to St. Charles designated for the Lenten Collection, will be divided equally among the seven groups. We are so grateful for any contributions you are able to make. These groups continue to experience a downturn in donations along with increasing needs for the clients they serve. Many thanks for your generous support! If you have any questions, please call Marcia Elchesen ( ). Lenten Collection for 3rd Sunday of Lent (March 10-11) Oakland Catholic Worker Family-size non-perishables, such as canned goods: vegetables, fruit, tuna, meat, and soup; rice, pasta, macaroni & cheese, pinto and other beans, cereal, peanut butter, cooking oil, sugar, flour and any other pantry staples. The RCIA next weekend March 10 at the Saturday 5:30 Liturgy and the following weeks, March 18, Sunday at the 9:30 Liturgy and March 25 at the 7:30 Liturgy will celebrate the Scrutinies for Mary Rose and Alex Gietzen in our catechumenal process, who are preparing for initiation at the Easter Vigil. Today, we continue to celebrate these powerful rituals, convinced that those about to enter into a covenant with God in Christ stand in need of our prayers for deliverance and protection. We also understand today that our prayers for protection from evil are not limited to those in the catechumenal process. Just as our entire community is called to journey with the catechumens through the Lenten season, we recognize the need we all share for freedom form evil and its effects. Newly Registered Parishioners: An Invitation!! All families who have registered at St. Charles within the last few months are invited to join us for an informal coffee and orientation to our parish.
