2 A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles Farewell & Well Wishes for Father Muller and Father Piletic Rev. William (Bill) Muller, SJ is the school president of Verbum Dei High School. Father Muller, a Jesuit priest, will be moving to Arizona in the coming weeks to begin his new ministry there. In 2008, through the recommendation of Bishop Clark, he came to help us celebrating our weekend masses. Father Muller truly lives very simply and modest. We have been blessed by his zeal and love of his priesthood especially through his Sunday homilies. Rev. William (Bill) Piletic, CM. Rev. is a member of the Congregation of the Mission which is known as the Vincentians. Father Bill has been helping our parish mostly during weekday masses. He and I know each other from when we were working in the same ministry that promotes vocation to the priesthood. Since 2008, Father Piletic from time to time, also assisted with penance services for CCS students and our parish and celebrated the Saturday evening masses. As you read this message, Father Bill is driving to Chicago to begin his new ministry at DePaul University some time in July. Please keep both Father Muller and Father Piletic in your prayers during their transition period. May they find great successes in all of their future ministries, and may God grant them excellent health. Seven Reasons: You are my Friends Last Sunday on the solemnity of Jesus Real Presence, I shared the importance of friendship in our life during my homily. Almost none of us can say that we live the span of our life of 10, 15, or 40 years without having a friend or group of friends. How do we embrace our relationship with Jesus is also important in the way we experience God in our prayers and in faith living? Do we recognize Jesus solely as the Son of God, the Messiah and/or a friend? I gave seven (7) reasons how people befriend us and why they become our friends (taken from 1. Proximity: being near someone on a regular basis; encounter & interact on a regular basis 2. Reciprocity: liking someone in return who likes you; 3. Similarity: having similar attitudes, values, interests and beliefs, while also being of similar age, gender, socioeconomic status, and education. 4. Attractiveness: personality and/or beauty. 5. Peer and family acceptance: in order for a friendship to fully develop into a committed relationship the potential friend has to be accepted (i.e. liked and respected) by other peers and family members. 6. Social Competence: a person is capable or able to do something: to integrate thinking, feeling and behavior to achieve social tasks and outcomes valued by others. 7. Self-disclosure: sharing information with others. I encouraged everyone to reflect upon these seven reasons how we interact with each other as a parish and I suggested that Jesus is our P.A.L., an intimate and close Friend. The three main reasons are Jesus is our Priest, our Altar, and our Lamb. At every Eucharistic celebration Jesus acts as our High Priest welcoming us as One Body of Christ; Jesus is the Altar preparing for the sacrificing; Jesus is our Lamb, the perfect sacrifice offering to God, our Father. Be inspired and informed in the faith; be involved in the ministries of the church. 3 WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH PETER AND PAUL Today is something of a rarity: the celebration of a saint s day that replaces the Sunday liturgy. Only a handful of these days, given the official rank of solemnity, are considered so foundational and primal to the mission of the Church that they can interrupt the Sunday sequence. And so it is with Peter and Paul today. In a way, they each have personality traits with which we can identify. They are both impetuous, sometimes acting or speaking thoughtlessly, contradicting the spiritual gifts given to them by God. At such times, they might receive a nudge from God, much the same as many of us experience. On the positive side, these men were deeply rooted in their faith in Christ, tireless and fearless in living out their call to spread the Good News of his death and resurrection. Perhaps we might identify more with one or the other, but the essential truth we celebrate today is this: Through the Spirit, Christ built and continues to build the Church and make the kingdom known through fragile, remarkable human beings, each graced in a particular way for the work of the reign of God. FREEDOM TO SERVE The Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Serve will take place from June 21 to July 4, 2014, a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus on the freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable in accord with human dignity and the Church's teaching. Keeping Summer Spiritual Many ac vi es compete for our me and interest during the summer, but there are some simple things we can do to keep us spiritually connected this summer: In your morning or evening walks, repeat a simple prayer silently such as Thank you, God, for this glorious day! or recite the rosary. LECTORS & EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS SCHEDULE: JUNE 30 JULY 5, TEAM 1 TODAY S READINGS ~ There is a marvelous contrast between the second reading and Gospel today. The Gospel describes the day on which Peter is established as the rock upon which the church is to be built. Peter speaks at the moment of his call, but Jesus knows that the words come from God. Paul's second le er to Timothy on the other hand shows an apostle at the end of his ministry, speaking from the heart about the cost of his ministry and the crown that he is confident awaits him on the other side. Both are called, but only a er the life me of service does the call live fully within the apostle. The same can be said of us. As we live out the call we received at our bap sm we become more and more aware of what it means to live the life of gra tude for the call of God. This is reflected in the psalm for the day, which calls on us to give thanks to God always and everywhere. The response to the psalm reminds us of the angel that saved Peter from prison in the first reading. 2003, OCP. All rights reserved.. Are you baptized? Have you received Holy Communion? Are you confirmed? Is your marriage a covenant or contract? These are great questions to ask yourself, especially if you have children registered in a Catholic School, or you are married to a Catholic, or your children go to public school and you want them raised in the Catholic Faith. God is so in love with you that he wants a closer walk with you. So, come COME & SEE. PARISH OFFICE RENOVATION NOTICE: We have temporarily relocated the parish office to the rectory building during the renova on period which began June 23 rd. Parish Office services will not be interrupted or canceled due to the renova on. The parish office will operate out of the rectory for several weeks during the months of June through early August. Hall B is used as storage for all the items and furniture removed from the parish office. Parish office/restrooms and hall B will not be available to parishioners during the summer to accommodate renova ons. The en re renova on is scheduled to last from June 23rd through August 15th (6 8 weeks). We kindly ask for your pa ence during this me as dates and mes for renova on projects are not set in stone. We will con nue to update you on the progress being made in the building. We look forward to having the renova ons completed with the start of the new programs and ministries by end of August; and we will be able to con nue serving all the needs of our parishioners with increased efficiency.
