1 THE LAMB OF GOD "Behold the Lamb of God!" We hear this phrase every Sunday at Mass, but there's a good chance that many Roman Catholics do not know who in the Bible originally spoke it. The phrase appears only in the Gospel of John, on the lips of John the Baptist, who utters it twice. In today's Gospel reading, John proclaims Jesus as the Lamb of God, and two of John's own disciples then follow Christ. A little bit later Andrew, who heard John and then followed Jesus, brings his brother Simon to be re-named Cephas, or Peter. A careful look at these Bible verses shows us the mission of everyone baptized into the Body of Christ: we must always proclaim our faith in Christ, so that others will follow him. We may not know how the will of God might work through those we bring to Christ; that is not the point. The point is that our ongoing mission as a church is to bring others to Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 2 Ordinary Time Over the past month Fr. Brad and I met with all the students in the cluster who are preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. This year, there will be one celebration of Confirmation for the entire cluster on Wednesday, February 7 at St. James. We had individual meetings with each student for about 15 minutes. In that time we had the chance to talk about many different topics, from career choices, prayer, Confirmation Saint choices to the student s relationship with the Lord. When I talked to the student about prayer, invariably we would end up praying with the Bible for part of our meeting. I would choose a passage from the Gospel and invite the student to prayerfully discern a word or phrase that stood out as I read out loud. I would then show the student how the Lord might be speaking in that word or phrase. I also gave a brief summary of St. Ignatius teaching on imaginative prayer, where we imagine ourselves in the biblical scene with Jesus and the Apostles. This got me thinking. In the Gospel accounts, you can observe the different religious seasons that Jesus and His fellow Jews would have observed, most notably the Jewish Passover. While religious seasons were the measuring stick of the Jewish year, it seems that most of Gospel narrative takes place outside of the big religious feasts. To put it in modern Catholic terms, most of the events in the Gospels the miracles, the healings, the powerful preaching take place in Ordinary Time. Jesus transformed the time away from the big, cultural, religious celebrations into the something extraordinary. My prayer is that we would give Him the chance to move in our lives, parishes and in the entire cluster during this Ordinary Time. Fr. Brad is starting off his Ordinary Time with a bang as he prepares for the March for Life. This week, Fr. Brad will travel with 7 students and 2 chaperones from our cluster for this life-changing experience. They will be part of a Baton Rouge caravan of over 400 young people on 9 tour buses going to Washington, D.C. The March for Life, an annual demonstration of peaceful prayer, usually draws well over 100,000 people. Please keep them in your prayers! This weekend we also begin a 9-week novena for racial harmony, praying the prayer for racial harmony that we used last year. We start this weekend because our country is remembering the witness of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who worked tirelessly to promote racial reconciliation. Just as we pray to convert the hearts in our nation to respect life from the womb to the tomb, we also pray asking the Lord to heal racial and ethnic divisions in our country. Peace, Fr. 5 Knights of Columbus Council will hold its annual fundraiser dinner on Sun., Feb. 4. Lunches will consist of baked chicken, rice dressing, corn and salad for $8 per plate. These will be take-out meals only. Drive through pick- up begins at 10:30 a.m. until 12 noon at Our Lady of Peace Church Hall. Cookies are $5.00 per dozen. Catholic Daughters Education Contest Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Philip #1504 is taking part in a National Catholic Daughters Education Contest. The themes selected for the contest encourage lively imagination and freedom of thought when student talent and application go hand in hand. The contests enable students of our communities, schools and CCD classes to compete and strive for awards while following certain rules. The choices of categories are Art, Essay, Poetry, Poster, Computer Art, Music and Photography. Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Celebration The Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Celebration will be held on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at 2:00pm at St. Aloysius Church (2025 Stuart Ave., Baton Rouge, La). Bishop Muench will be the Celebrant for the Mass honoring couples who are celebrating 25th, 50th, and 65th or greater wedding anniversaries. The families of the honored couples are also invited to attend the liturgy and the reception afterward in the St. Aloysius Gym.
