2 Good News! As we announced two weeks ago, Fr. Brad will be staying as parochial vicar in our cluster for at most another year. This is good news for our cluster. I made the request to the Diocese based on the transitions I ll be facing in the next year as we renovate and move into the main cluster office at Our Lady of Peace. Fr Brad will give me a sense of stability in the midst of these seismic changes. Two reminders. First, Fr. Brad s assistance is mainly to help me with funerals and pastoral needs during the week, including sick calls and youth group. On the weekends, both of us will continue to help other parishes in the diocese. We ve done this many weekends this year. For example, Fr. Brad celebrated the Easter Vigil at St. Patrick s in Baton Rouge because the pastor was out of commission. For this reason we can t add old Masses back to the weekend schedule. Second, I can t predict how the mental and physical health of other priests will hold up over the next year. If a priest in the diocese needs a leave of absence, there could be a shuffle which may include Fr. Brad leaving this assignment for another. I remind you to pray for your priests and other priests in the diocese. I hope we stay healthy! I want to share with you the experience from my recent trip to Indianapolis. I appreciate all the wishes for a good vacation even though this was business trip. Perhaps your prayers sent great weather where I was; I arrived the day after a light snow, and by Thursday the weather was in the 60 s. I met with a business coach while I was up there to help me be better organized. Meeting one-on-one, we went in-depth into my methods and habits. The good news is I have lots of areas to improve in terms of keeping tabs of all my projects and tasks. The flip side is that I still feel unbalanced with all the things I m keeping tracking of, which means things may slip through the cracks. Adoration Chapel Meeting. This Tuesday I will be meeting with any interested cluster parishioner to discuss design proposals for the new adoration chapel. There has been confusion about how the chapel will be paid for. Over the years, the chapel members have collected money for a new chapel. That money will be used for the new chapel project. There is no need for a capital campaign because the money has already been raised. Thank you to the response to our adoration promotion so far! We hope to inspire more cluster parishioners to visit our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. He s there, waiting for you! Peace, Fr. 4 Congratulations This past Sunday, the following children received their First Holy Eucharist at St. Philip: Justin Aucoin. Olivia Berry, Dallys Burham, Dayton Cazenave, Caroline Delaune, A Lon Julien, Michael Landry, Alexis O' Connor, Nicholas O' Connor, Tayden Poche, Jonathan Schexnayder Jordyn Veillon. Congratulations to all of them. Thank you to all of the people who helped with First Communion especially Karen Scott for preparing these children for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Thanks to Ms Stephenie Aubert, CRE. Finally, thank you to the parents for your commitment to bringing up your children in the faith. Meeting for Future Adoration Chapel There will be an open meeting to discuss design proposals for the future adoration chapel on Tuesday, April 24 at 6:30pm in the OLOP large hall. Everyone is invited to attend. May Crowning The Annual May Crownings will be held at the Masses on the weekend of May 5-6, Our Lady of Peace will be on May 5 at the 4:00pm Mass. St. Philip will be on May 5 at the 6:00pm Mass and St. James will be on May 6 at the 8:00am Mass. Magnificat Subscriptions Due It is that time again - time to pay your Magnificat subscriptions. The subscription price is $35.00 and payable to St. Philip Church. If you are a new subscriber, please put your check in an envelope with your name, New Subscriber and Magnificat on the front. If this is a renewal, please write renewal and your name on the front of the envelope. These envelopes can be placed in the collection. For new subscribers - your subscription will begin with the June issue. SignUp for Altar Servers We well be beginning an altar server class after the Easter Season. If you are 9 years or entering the 4th grade (and already made your First Communion) through high school, you can sign up on the sheet at the door of the church at St. James and St. Philip. We are in need of more servers at St. Philip. Please prayerfully consider the ministry of Altar Serving as your way to give your talents back to God. Moving forward with the call of the Lord Our Lady of Peace Gospel Choir will be having a membership drive beginning March 10-April 07, Any member of our cluster qualifies. Treasures from Our Tradition Most languages take the name for this fifty-day season from the Lord's Passover: Pasqua in Italian, Pâques in French, Paach in Dutch, Pascha in Greek and Russian. English has a much newer name, the name of a pagan goddess, Eoster. For centuries before Christianity took hold, in both Germany and Britain the spring equinox was dedicated to her and the concepts of fertility and rebirth. She was said to be a playful spirit, following the Sun King's chariot, and ending the reign of winter. She had a magical companion, a rabbit who hid eggs in the fields to coax plants and animals to rebirth. It was believed that Eoster once came across a bird with broken wings and saved it by turning it into a rabbit--an egg-laying rabbit at that! Although they were baptized, most people didn't take to the new Latin name (Pascha Domini) too easily, and kept calling the spring equinox by the old accustomed name. The Rejected Savior In the reading from Acts, Peter explains to the leaders of Israel how they cured a crippled man. They probably expected Peter to take credit for the cure, so they were waiting for him to hang himself by his words. Peter, of course, gives the credit to Jesus and then makes two important points. First he calls Jesus the "stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone." Jesus was rejected by fellow Jews when he was crucified, but was actually doing God's will when he gave his life on the cross. This gave comfort to those who had expected the leaders of Israel to follow Jesus and recognize him as the Messiah. The second point made by Peter was that Jesus is the one and only savior of the world. In those days, the Roman emperor was considered to be a god and was called a savior. While we no longer look to politicians to be saviors, we need to remember that Jesus is the Savior: he forgives our sins, shows us how to love God and our neighbors, and hears our prayers. And in the end, he is with us when we die to bring us to eternal life. Now the choice is yours: to reject the Savior or make Him the cornerstone of your life. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S.
