1 GOD'S PROMISE TO ALL PEOPLE Today Isaiah reminds the people of God that the land shall be restored to their possession, they shall rejoice to see their people return from the bondage of exile, and that they shall be a light to the nations. In other words, through the people of Israel, the Savior shall come to all people who seek God with a sincere heart. This brings joy and the radiance of God's glory to all the world and to all people everywhere. Through the fidelity of the people of God, and through God's fidelity to them, all people shall become God's children and rejoice in the fulfillment of God's promise to Israel. Copyright (c) J. S. 2 Cold Days of Winter There s a passage I regularly pray in the Liturgy of the Hours that intrigues me. For those who don t know, the Liturgy of the Hours is a 4-week cycle of Psalms and Bible readings that priests, deacons and religious pray. At my ordination, I promised to pray this prayer for the rest of my life. Even though such long-term promises may seem burdensome or imprudent, I love the idea that I am praying in unison with faithful around the world. Every morning from December 25 through January 1, I prayed the praises that the young men sang as God saved them from the fiery furnace in Daniel 3: This passage is a hymn where all creation is called to give glory to God. The 4 lines that intrigue me are these: Cold and chill, bless the Lord. / Dew and rain, bless the Lord. / Frost and chill, bless the Lord. / Ice and snow, bless the Lord. In all of these verses, everything from the stars in the sky to the creatures in the sea are called to bless the Lord. I am puzzled that cold weather is given 3 different lines in this hymn of praise. If you didn t know already, I don t like cold weather. Two events, however, showed me how the cold weather does glorify God. The first event I have already written about, the immaculate snow on the Immaculate Conception. The second took place on the occasion of LSU s disappointing loss on January 1. I watched the LSU game with some brother priests at a rectory in Baton Rouge. The weather that day matched the spirits of the LSU faithful at the end of the game: cold and gray. I thought to myself as the camera panned the LSU fans in the stadium, Those are some sad, sad fans. What I will remember from this day isn t any play in the game, for example, the missed field goals or the generally sloppy play. What I will remember is the water fountain at this priest s rectory. Despite the freezing temperatures, the multi-tiered fountain was still pumping water. Because of the freezing temperatures, the water formed what looked like beautiful, frozen petals coming off each level of the fountain. I have seen ice sculptures before, but never had I seen icicles in such an artistic array. It was magnificent, so much so that it was obvious that the freezing weather glorified the Lord. I am grateful that the Lord showed me how cold and chill, ice and snow gives Him glory. I will be more grateful when I can sing this line from Daniel 3 in warmer days: Fire and heat, bless the Lord! Treasures from Our Tradition Where on earth would you go to honor the magi? Iran or Saudi Arabia, Tarshish or the Isles come to mind, but Cologne, Germany would be a good choice. There the Shrine of the Three Kings has been the centerpiece of the city's cathedral since the fourth century. Today it is the largest reliquary in the world: a gilded and ornamented triple casket gleaming high above the altar. In the fourth century, the supposed relics of the wise men were taken from Constantinople to Milan, where they remained until the German Emperor with the unlikely name Frederick Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne. Ever since, pilgrims have streamed into the city to honor the magi, the first of all pilgrims, and thus the heavenly patrons of all who have some holy wanderlust. This largest Gothic cathedral in Europe today was begun in the mid-1200s to house the relics. In medieval times, the relics in a city's possession were often the key to a sound international economy. The reliquary was last opened in 1864, and the remains of three men were indeed discovered. The cathedral is well worth a visit, with enormous twin spires forming the largest façade of any church in the world (it is the model for St. Patrick's in New York). Construction began in 1248 and ended in 1880, a sixhundred-year project. Today, it is a World Heritage Site, described by the U.N. as "an exceptional work of human creative genius." This great treasure of our tradition suffered fourteen direct bomb hits in World War II but did not collapse. It survived while the city burned around it, preserved, the townspeople say, by three heavenly patrons. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
