1 Fourth Sunday of Lent Today is the fourth Sunday of our Lenten preparation. The first reading is a bleak reminder of our sinfulness, our deafness to those who warn us, and the consequences of our continuing arrogance and destructiveness. The psalm tells us what it is like to be separated from the love of God. We weep and we remember. Ephesians oﬀers us hope. God is merciful even though our sins have destroyed our lives. God saves us, not because of who we are but because of who God is. God's love raises us up from our sinful despair. John reminds us that although we deserve condemnation because of our repeated sinfulness, God so loved the world that God did what Abraham was asked to do. God sacrificed Jesus, the beloved Son, that we might be saved. 2 Joy and Sorrow In my homily research for one weekend, I discovered the song, Enough, by Sara Groves. I liked the song enough that I may sing part of it in a homily in the future. Here are the lyrics that inspired this bulletin article: Really we don t need much / Just strength to believe There s honey in the rock / There s more than we see In these patches of joy / These stretches of sorrow There s enough for today / There will be enough tomorrow These words remind me that sorrow is a part of life. Sometimes it feels there is far more suffering than joy, which is why the line in these patches of joy, these stretches of sorrow caught my attention. This weekend we celebrate a patch of joy amidst the stretch of Lent with Laetare Sunday. The Church gives us a reminder that even in the agonizing pain of the Way of the Cross, the hope of Easter is on the horizon. We, or someone we know, may be struggling mightily right now, but there is always hope as long as we draw breath. The French writer Leon Bloy implies that whether we are bearing the cross or being relieved of the cross, it is Jesus who is with us in the patches and stretches: Jesus shifts His Cross from His shoulders to ours, and from ours to His, so that we are forever weeping either from pain or from compassion. Suffering is a part of life, and as Catholics we re not afraid of it. That s why we prominently display God s suffering love on the crucifix in our churches and homes. We re not afraid to kneel before the Lord during Mass and when we enter the church to genuflect. We fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. We pray the Way of the Cross. Obviously, this doesn t mean we re better than a non-catholic who doesn t follow those practices, but our Church gives us little opportunities to practice suffering so we can be reminded that suffering isn t the end of the world. In light of Jesus Resurrection from the dead, it can be the beginning of something glorious. One more note. This Thursday, March 15 at 7pm at the KC Hall there will be a town hall where I will announce the decision of the location of the main cluster office. All are invited to attend. I will give details about how I came to the decision and hope to address some of the concerns I ve heard since the decision process started last year. Peace, Fr. 4 Town Hall Meeting There will be a Town Hall Meeting to announce the location of the main cluster office on Thursday, March 15 at 7:00pm at the KC Home on River Road. All are encouraged to attend. Change in Schedule on Thursday at St. Philip On Thursday, March 15, Stations of the Cross will be held before Mass at 5:30pm. This will allow folks who want to go to Mass and stations to be able to attend the Town Hall Meeting. Anointing of the Sick There will be several opportunities for Anointing of the Sick during the month of March. The next opportunity will be on March 12, 2018 at Our Lady of Peace. The Mass will be held at 10:00am in the Parish Hall followed by lunch. The third and final opportunity will be at St. Philip on March 27 at 9:00am. You can attend the Mass most convenient for you that best fits your schedule. Moving forward with the call of the Lord Our Lady of Peace Gospel Choir will be having a membership drive beginning March 10-April 07, Any member of our cluster qualifies. There monthly dues are $3 per week or $36 a year. We especially invite the men of our cluster to participate. Practice is on Thursdays at 6pm. Praying that you consider joining us. Tickets will be sold before Mass on Saturday March 10, The menu is as follows: Fish, Shrimp rice, Peas, Potato Salad, bread and dessert. Tickets are $9.00. Tickets will also be available from Paulette Joseph , Florence Bastain KPC 135 Fundraiser Knights of Peter Claver Council 135 and Ladies Auxiliary will be selling tickets for the Good Friday Fish Fry after masses on Sunday, March 11 and Sunday, March 18, Tickets are $8.00. Thank you for your support. Knights of Columbus 1514 Dinner The annual Fundraising Dinner will be held on Sunday, March 25 at the KC Home in Vacherie. The meal consists of Rice Dressing, 1/2 Baked Chicken, corn, bread and salad. The donation is $8.00. Tickets can be purchased from Susan Hotard, Patti Rodrigue or Wayne Waguespack. The CDA will have their annual Sweet Shop fundraiser CDA members are reminded to bring sweets for the Sweet Shop. Sanctuary Candle Openings There are many openings at St. Philip for Sanctuary Candles Memorials. Please call St. Philip Church office to schedule a date for your loved one. The cost is $ Second Collection this weekend is for Catholic Relief Services. Lenten Activities & Events in the Cluster Adoremus This week will be the last Adoremus for this Lenten season.. Reconciliation & Stations On Thursdays during Lent Stations of the Cross will follow 6:00pm Mass at St. Philip Church. During Stations, Fr. Brad or Fr. Matthew will be hearing Confessions.
