2 Empty Tank Adventures I got a call this week from a former student (I was her high school chaplain in Baton Rouge) who now teaches at Vacherie Elementary, I ran out of gas! Obviously, she was pretty distraught to be stuck on the side of one of the highways in town. Just as I was figuring out where there s a space gas can in the cluster, she called back to say that someone had pulled over to help out. Thank you to that Good Samaritan! This, however, reminded me of my own adventures with an empty gas tank. Some drivers can t stand their gas tank needle even touching E. They make sure to stop at the gas station at a quarter tank. Other drivers walk on the wild side, seeing how low can it go. I fall into the latter category. Because I like numbers and analyzing trivial data, I have kept track of miles driven on every tank. This allowed me to push the limit with each subsequent fill up, that is, until I reached that limit. I was driving back from Pierre Part after a deanery meeting, a monthly meeting of local priests.because the other parishes in our part of the diocese are south and west, I drive Highway 3127 to get to them. I was driving a lonely stretch of 3127 when the engine suddenly died. At first, I thought I had a problem other than an empty tank because the needle usually goes a little farther below E before I m close to empty. Some of you are probably anxious just reading that! My car finally came to a rolling stop near the intersection of 3127 and Luckily I ran out of gas during office hours, so my staff at the St. James office was able to help. In the meantime, I reflected on the lessons this adventure afforded me. First, there s no special prize for most miles driven on a tank of gas, so it s OK if I fill up before the needle touches E. Second, as much as I wrestle with technology, I appreciate the ability to stay connected from the middle of anywhere. Third, I appreciate even more the help of others when I m in a tight spot. Can you imagine walking 6 miles to get gas for an empty tank? I can hear some of you saying now, Been there. Done that! By the way, I appreciate all the words of support in the last two weeks. I shared with you some struggles of mine in a bulletin article two weeks ago, and I was surprised that so many gave me words of encouragement. Thank you to those who expressed their support to me, and thanks to many others who offered prayers. I want to assure you that I am very happy as a priest. It s just that being pastor in a cluster of parishes with so many changes isn t just hard on the parishioners. Thanks again for all your support! Peace, Fr. Knights of Peter Claver Honors Mr. Edwin Octave, Jr. Now Hiring: Part Time Maintenance Fr. Matthew is looking for hands-on help in the cluster parishes. The part time maintenance position will assist with small repair projects, upkeep of the cluster facilities, and setting up for events (for example, moving tables and chairs) among other tasks. Catechetical Sunday This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 16, The 2018 theme will be "Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. (USCCB) In our cluster we are fortunate to have 50 people involved as Catechists/helpers. We appreciate their dedication to the education of our children in the faith.
