2 Why Adoration? As you heard this past weekend, Fr. Matthew and I will be focusing on the mystery of the Eucharist from weeks 2-4 of Easter, with particular emphasis on the adoration chapel. This begs the question, Why do we even need adoration? It is true that Jesus command to do this in memory of me, was about celebrating the Mass, not adoring His presence in the Blessed Sacrament. True, but I am apt to respond, we are bound to make sure that our reception of the Blessed Sacrament is as fruitful as possible. I ll use an analogy to explain. Is it a good idea to ask a friend who rarely listens to music to accompany you to a 3 hour opera, all sung in a different language. Probably not. They would not have the context, formation, or pallet for what you were trying to give them. They d probably be bored, and would most likely never enter an opera again. Instead it would be smart to give them small doses of opera at a time over time. Give them the translation of what the opera was saying. Give them the background of the composer and why he wrote what he wrote. Basically, it would be smart to make sure your friend was ready to receive the objective greatness of what was going to be put before him. Now, even after proper preparation, opera is not everyone s favorite thing, and that s okay. But God ought to be everyone s thing. And most specifically, the Eucharist ought to be everyone s thing. And yet, it is clear that sometimes people are not ready for the mystery and objective greatness of what they are receiving. Even in my own experience, I received the Eucharist almost every weekend growing up, and never had a deep encounter with Christ, even though I was objectively receiving Him. That is, until I went to adoration. Adoration to me was that preparation for receiving Jesus fruitfully that everyone needs. It gives us time to be with Jesus, to hear Jesus, and to contemplate Jesus, so that when we are walking down the aisle at Mass, we do so with ready hearts. Has Mass become routine and stale for you? Are you not completely blown away by the greatness of what goes down in the Mass? Maybe you need a little adoration. Heres the plan. Take a weeknight this week, look up the gospel for the upcoming Sunday, and head to the adoration chapel. After you kneel for a few moments, say to Jesus, Lord show me you are present through the words I read tonight. Then read the gospel. What does Jesus say? I bet this Sunday s Mass will be better than the last. Fr. Moving forward with the call of the Lord Our Lady of Peace Gospel Choir will be having a membership drive beginning March 10-April 07, Any member of our cluster qualifies.
