2 A Blessed Smile About a month ago I took the staff to New Orleans for a day of team building. We went to the Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos Shrine where we toured the church and had Mass together as a staff. Many Catholics find Blessed Seelos life inspirational, especially for his healing intercession. I was inspired by his life s work, beginning with his courage to travel from Germany to minister to Catholics in the US from Pittsburgh to New Orleans. He was known to be a happy pastor, and he took great care to instruct children in the faith and rekindle the faith in adults through missions. He gave himself without reservation to his ministry, eventually contracting a terminal case of yellow fever from the people he ministered to. Even before his death, he made himself available to all. His kindly disposition and attention to the needs of the people made him a popular confessor, so much so that people came to him from neighboring towns. In the Shrine there is a bronze statue of Blessed Seelos sitting on a bench with his perpetual smile. During his ministry in New Orleans, he would sit near the docks, greeting the dock workers and inviting them to the Sacrament of Confession. I ve included a picture of me on the bench with the Blessed Seelos statue. I guess you can say I was waiting for him to hear my confession! That reminds me; this weekend we begin a new liturgical year. A good way to ring in the new liturgical year is celebrating the Sacrament of Confession. As I announced last weekend, we have a Penance Service at St Philip at 6:30pm on Tuesday, December 4. If you haven t gone to Confession this year or in years, take advantage of this time where we ll have many priests you ve never met before. (I know that s a selling point!) I hope we can all grow during this season of Advent. Peace, Fr. Invoices will not be sent out. Angel Tree The Angel Tree will be displayed on December 2 at St. James. Please take an angel and purchase a gift for a needy child. The angel will identify the sex, age, and wish of the child for whom you are buying the gift. Place the angel on your gift and bring the gift (please do not wrap, gift bags only) to Mass the weekend of December 16th. Please no riding toys, bikes, or gift cards. Place your gift in the sanctuary before Mass. The gifts will be blessed at the 8:00 a.m. Mass on December 16th and will be distributed on Saturday, December 22 nd. Donations Accepted for Poinsettia Tree Notre Dame de la Paix Catholic Daughters is sponsoring the Poinsettia Memorial Tree for Christmas again this year at Our Lady of Peace. Plants are $10 each. Special envelopes are in the chapel foyer. Write the name of the person memorialized in your donation as well as the name and phone number of the person making the donation. Place the envelope in any church collection on or before Dec. 16.
