2 The Life of Mary This past week we celebrated the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Assumption is the teaching that at the end of her earthly life, Mary was taken into heaven, body and soul. I just finished a book entitled The Life of Mary as Seen by the Mystics, by Raphael Brown. This book is a compilation of visions by Saints who conversed with Mary about the unwritten events in the life of Jesus and Mary. These visions are private revelations approved by the Church. Private revelations are not necessary for our salvation; however, when the Church approves them, she is saying there is nothing in them that contradicts the true faith. A common theme of these private revelations is the love Mary has for the Lord, a love of longing. As a little girl, Mary had no idea about her destiny. As a good Jew, however, she was aware of the destiny of her people, that the Lord had promised to send a Savior through them. Her prayers as a girl were often centered on asking the Lord to send the Redeemer. She gave voice to the longing in the Book of Psalms: Like the deer that years for running streams, so my soul is yearning for you, my God. (Psalm 42) As Mary in age and wisdom, the more she learned about God, the more she loved Him. Another theme is Mary s love of poverty. As a child, Mary would beg her parents for money which she gave to the poor. As a new mother, Mary gave away food and money so frequently including the gifts the wise men gave them that sometimes she chose to go without for the sake of the poor. After Pentecost, she gave guidance to the Apostles about the importance of poverty, one of the important purposes of [my Son s] coming into the world was to uplift poverty and to teach it to mortals who have a horror of it. Mary s humility is shocking. As a girl she is teased by others out of envy, and she asks for their help, My friends, you are right in saying that I am the least and most imperfect among you, but then you, my sisters, must pardon me and teach me in my ignorance. In the early Church, Mary continues to model humility. For example, she asked the evangelists to write little about her so that she wouldn t distract new converts from her Son. In life and in death, Mary points to her Son, Jesus. She explains why the Assumption was delayed in being widely taught: That my Assumption was not known to many persons was the Will of God, my Son, in order that faith in His Ascension might first of all be firmly established in the hearts of men, for they were not prepared to believe in His Ascension, especially if my Assumption had been announced in the beginning. Let us follow Mary s example of love, simplicity and humility to grow closer to her Son, Jesus. Peace, Fr.
