1 SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sunday's Gospel reading, taken from the conclusion of John's Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so "that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name" (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that "[e]veryone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God" (5:1)--what we might refer to as being "born again." Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 2 Taking a Train to Train My grandfather always wanted to take a train trip across the country, but for the majority of his life his hands were full. Between running his business and raising his 8 children, there wasn t much time for anything else. It was only in the twilight of his life that he got to live his dream. I remember this was a big deal for him, so I wonder if his dream inspired a similar interest in me for train travel. I bring up train travel because this week I am taking a train to go to Indiana for some one-on-one training in business administration. The reason I m taking a train to train is simple. Here s an analogy. Imagine you just completed your job training and you got your first job. You have an entry-level position such as a field tech at a chemical plant or assistant teacher at a school. You don t have anyone to supervise, you enjoy your job and you feel proficient at it. Now, imagine that you get a promotion to another plant or school, but this time you have the highest position. You go from field tech to plant manager, from assistant teacher to principal of a school. That would be daunting, especially if the areas of responsibility administration and supervision were not areas of expertise or areas where you received substantial training. This is how I feel as pastor. As a parochial vicar, I had no role (and very little training) in administration and supervision in my parish assignments. As a pastor, I am basically the CEO of a local non-profit with three locations in this civil parish. In the olden days, a priest got his pastor wings at a smaller parish where the parish was established and stable. Those days are gone now. Because the demands of the job have changed, I need to be creative in how I find support to grow as pastor. I will be meeting with a business coach in Indiana and hope to continue that mentoring relationship after I return. The train trip is lagniappe. Enough about my life! Let s talk Divine Mercy. St. Faustina s diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul, is one of my favorite books for spiritual reading. You can open the diary anywhere and find profound spiritual insights. One of the images that I read again and again is that the mercy of God is an ocean. Jesus says in the diary, On this day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My Mercy. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet (#699). I pray that our parishes my receive this great gift of mercy and then be God s mercy to the world. Peace, Fr. 3 Divine Mercy Sunday On that day (Divine Mercy Sunday) the very depths of My mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My mercy. St. James Gospel Choir Meeting St. James Gospel Choir will have a meeting on Thursday, April 19, 2018 following choir practice. Choir members, please make every effort to attend the meeting. Treasures from our Tradition Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them through adulthood: "Pinky," "Boo-boo," and the like. This Sunday was once called "Low Sunday," a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or "The Lord's Day for Putting Away the Albs," so no wonder the nickname "Low Sunday" arose. In the old calendar it was also called "Quasimodo Sunday," after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or "As newborn infants," a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo's bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named "Quasimodo" for the feast. --Rev.
