2 Patience: Fruit or Virtue? Have you ever met someone who is very particular with words and at the same time is eager to correct you? When I was a chaplain at the Catholic student center on LSU s campus, I met a student who freely gave such corrections. Whenever someone would say, Patience is a virtue, he would respond, Actually, it s a fruit. If given the time of day, he would explain that in Galatians 5:22-23, Paul includes patience among the fruits of the Spirit: In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. A fruit or a virtue? What s the difference? From The Modern Catholic Dictionary edited by Fr. John Hardon, a virtue is A good habit that enables a person to act according to right reason enlightened by faith. Also called an operative good habit, it makes its possessor a good person and his or her actions also good. Fruits of the Holy Spirit, on the other hand, are supernatural works that, according to St. Paul, manifest the presence of the Holy Spirit. A virtue is a good habit something I do; a fruit is a visible sign of the Holy Spirit working in my life something God does. So, is patience a virtue or a fruit? I decided to do some research on the matter. I found that there are two words translated as patience in the New Testament. Keep in mind, the New Testament was written in Greek, and the Greek language has more words than the English language. For example, there are four Greek words that are translated into the one English word for love. Of the two Greek words for patience, one can literally be translated remaining under, for example, when a person is bearing a burden that s out of his control. The Greek word for patience in Galatians 5:22, however, can be translated long temper. This kind of patience refers to bearing with people more than situations. St. John Chrysostom said that this is the grace of not avenging oneself, the grace of being slow to respond to someone with anger. In conclusion, patience is a virtue, meaning I can grow in patience when I am tested by a situation outside of my control. Patience is also a fruit, especially when I refrain from following my temper by the grace of the Holy Spirit. I bring this up because I need patience. This past week, the architect and I met with four contractors who will bid on the job to renovate a rectory into the main cluster office. The contractors will submit their bids by October, and hopefully construction can begin shortly thereafter. To prepare for all of our staff to move into the current admin building at Our Lady of Peace, I moved my office upstairs. Right now, my office is in disarray. I need patience with this long office project. I can t wait till it s done! Peace, Fr.
