1 Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Parish Office 2597 Glendale Avenue School Office (920) Green Bay, WI (920) "Now what?" It's a difficult thing to hear, isn't it? The train comes late, a child unexpectedly cries, and the latest public policy debate flares up in the news. Life throws us curveballs, and we have no choice but to adapt. Jesus and the Apostles find themselves in that exact situation in today's Gospel. The Apostles have returned from their two-by-two missionary journey. As Jesus hears all of their stories, he knows they need time to recover and refresh. "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." Their wilderness retreat is short-lived, however, as eager crowds discover their location. Jesus is well aware of the needs of his disciples. Still, as he looks out at the crowd, "His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd." The rest break is over. "He began to teach them many things." For those of us who have experienced a taste of much-needed relaxation only to have it taken away abruptly, perhaps we surmise what the Apostles might have been feeling in that moment. But Jesus isn't being inconsiderate of the Apostles needs. He offers them -- and us -- a lived lesson. St. John Paul II wrote, "The whole of Christ's life was a continual teaching: his silences, his miracles, his gestures, his prayer, his love for people, his special affection for the little and the poor, his acceptance of the total sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of the world" (On Catechesis in Our Time, 9). In Jesus' choice to teach, we see all of these things: sacrificial love, concern for the marginalized, and priority of people's needs over personal preference. These aren't abstract ideals. They're lived realities as we strive to live and love like Jesus. When a new obstacle confronts you in your life, how do you respond?

Last year through the efforts of 12 area churches we packed 552,000 meals during our October MobilePack event. This was enough meals to feed 1,512 children for a year. The food we packed last year was sent to Liberia, Honduras, Cuba (hurricane relief), and Haiti. This year the partner churches have set a new stretch goal to pack 750,000 meals!!! All of these meals are paid for through local funding efforts like our M&M drive, aluminum Can collection, upcoming cookie sale, and donations from individuals and organizations. To a starving child, hope can only begin with a reliable source of nutritious food. Thank you for your generous support.
3 VESTMENT UPDATE DID YOU KNOW Corporal Work of Mercy: Visit the imprisoned I was in prison, and you visited me. Matthew 25:36 During his recent pastoral visit to the United States, Pope Francis visited the Philadelphia Correctional Facility. His example and words are most instructive of this corporal work of mercy All of us have something we need to be cleansed of, or purified from. May the knowledge of that fact inspire us to live in solidarity, to support one another and seek the best for others. In her book Mercy in the City, author Kerry Weber wrote about her experience of visiting San Quentin prison. She recalled her own pre-conceptions in an interview when she said, I expected to visit prisoners or criminals -- but I didn t expect to visit fellow human beings. That same surprise of humanity is often the experience of visitors who remember how grateful those in prisons are for a visit. Each one of us might not be able to visit a prison and encourage inmates personally as the Pope so often does, but we can assist in the various ministries for the imprisoned including programs that seek to rehabilitate prisoners when they are released and to support families of those imprisoned. These outreach efforts are true works of charity. What can I do? *Pray for those who are imprisoned. *Pray for their families. *Assist in various ministries for the imprisoned, especially those that seek to rehabilitate the prisoner. *Support the family during their loved ones imprisonment. Any outreach efforts are true works of charity. Next week: Corporal Work of Mercy: Shelter the Homeless We had over 200 parishioners who were interested in purchasing a vestment! As we stated before, this was no surprise, as this is a parish of true generosity and understanding of the importance of prayer. We have randomly picked the names for the vestments and each of those parishioners have been contacted. For those whose name was not chosen, you will be getting a call from Fr. Scott within the next several weeks. What are we doing with our old vestments? We are still determining that. One suggestion is to donate them to priests in other countries who could definitely use some newer vestments. Again, thank you so much for your enthusiasm and generosity! The vestments are in the process of being ordered. They are being shipped from Brazil so we should be receiving them within the next several months or so. God Bless! Fr. John & Fr. Scott JUBILEE PRAYER CARDS You will notice that inside the front cover of your missals is the Jubilee Prayer Card. This is a prayer that was initiated by Bishop Ricken to be said by all parishes in the Green Bay Diocese. It is a beautiful prayer that we will be reciting at various masses. THANK YOU to the Middle School Day Campers whose help was enlisted last week to help attach the Jubilee Prayer cards to the inside of each of the Missals. Your work is very much appreciated! You guys ROCK!
