1 Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish January 28, 2018 Parish Office 2597 Glendale Avenue School Office (920) Green Bay, WI (920) All were amazed and asked one another, "What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him." His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee. - Mk 1:27-28 "The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes." Those gathered in the synagogue where Jesus taught had never heard anything like this before. They were used to the preaching of the welleducated scribes, but Jesus possessed something that those men lacked: authority. Instead of merely interpreting the laws of the prophets, Jesus presented a new vision, indeed, he shared the good news of the Gospel with his listeners. We do not have the opportunity to stand in the presence of Jesus in the same way that those firstcentury Jews did, but nonetheless we can also stand in awe of his authority. His teachings are available to us through the sacred Scriptures that the Church has preserved and through the sacred tradition that the Church carries on. And in a special way, Christ's authority continues to inspire and guide us through the ministries of the papacy, episcopacy, and priesthood that Jesus established on our behalf while he was yet on earth. As Catholics, we have a special share in the astonishing authority of Jesus through the hierarchy of the Church. Although this structure is often misunderstood or misinterpreted, it is actually an authority rooted in service and modeled after Christ who told his apostles, "The greatest among you must be your servant" (Mt 23:11). This humble exercise of authority is contrary to the worldly search for power. And whenever we find ourselves in a position of authority, we too should strive to lead and direct others in the true spirit of Christian love and service. Chances are, if we truly imitate Christ in this way, people will be astonished at what they see. ~ AUTHORITY ROOTED IN SERVICE ~

4 January 28, 2018 Stewardship of Service Commitment forms With our hands opened, and as stewards of all gifts received from God, we give thanks. Grateful for each of you who serve in so many ways within your families, jobs and church. Evolving in service is evolving in your faith. Taking steps and growing into service is saying YES and AMEN to the desire that is on our minds and in our hearts. Desire of what God is calling you and me to do. Please return your Stewardship of Service commitment form to one of the gift bags at the entrances of church. SCOUT SUNDAY DID YOU KNOW... There are so many words in the English language that are misunderstood or misinterpreted. The same holds true for the verbiage in our Catholic Community. In an effort to help each of us better understand what we are reading in the scripture, prayers we recite, verbiage used in homilies or during mass, etc., the Stewardship Committee has put together a list of words with definitions to help us all better understand our Catholic Faith. Watch each bulletin for the word(s) of the week! Evangelization - Is the proclamation of the Gospel to all peoples near and far. (USCCA) Evangelization essentially is introducing a friend, neighbor or family member to Jesus Christ. Who is He to you? When they see the joy you have from knowing, loving and serving Jesus, they will want that for themselves too. New Evangelization - The New Evangelization calls each of us to deepen our faith, believe in the Gospel message and go forth to proclaim the Gospel. The focus of the New Evangelization calls all Catholics to be evangelized first and then go forth to evangelize others. In a special way, the New Evangelization is focused on re-posing the Gospel to those who have experienced a crisis of faith. (USCCB) On February 10:00 the Scouts will be hosting Sunday Mass. All scouts and their families are encouraged to attend and celebrate the connection of scouting and faith. The Scouts will be greeting, lecturing, ushering, and serving donuts and coffee after the Sunday masses. Congratulations to all the St. John s Scouts who have received their honors, especially the ones who received their Eagle Award over the past year! We are all very proud of you! GOD BLESS! Formerly, Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) Mark your calendars for the Spring Weekend: Men s: April Women s: April First Reconciliation On Wednesday, January 24, 88 students celebrated their 1st Reconciliation. Through this sacrament, our parish is blessed and strengthened. My prayer, for these children, is for peace in their hearts and homes. I would like to say thank you to Father Scott, Father John, parents, teachers, catechists, and all who helped with the preparation for this Sacrament. 5 January 28, 2018 Going to the Hospital? Principal s Reflection Do you know you are going to the hospital? Have unexpectedly been hospitalized? Please let the staff at the hospital know that you belong to St. John the Baptist, Howard and that you would like a visit. When you do this, the hospital is supposed to call the parish to let us know. Deacon Nick Williams and Ruth Holloway, Pastoral Minister, visit the hospitals regularly. We are sorry if you have been in the hospital and not received a visit, but often the parish staff is unaware that you have been hospitalized. If, after your hospital stay, you will be in a rehab facility or will require nursing home care, please call the office to let us know where you are. The hospitals are not allowed to tell us and we want to know so we can bring communion to you during your stay. Help us keep track of you and your family! Baptismal Changes In the past, all families that have had their children baptized at St. John s had received a welcome gift through our Elizabeth Ministry. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all those who have donated their time, talent, or treasure to make these gift bags possible! So many families have been touched by your generosity. In keeping with this beautiful tradition, baptismal families will now be receiving a board book called, I know Jesus, by Matthew Kelly and a homemade baby blanket. The books have been purchased with a generous donation from our Knights of Columbus council #6279 and our parish community. The blankets have been created and donated by several of our talented parishioners. We want our baptismal families to continue to feel the love and support we have for them; knowing that we are here to help them pass on their faith to their children. As a result of these changes, we will no longer be collecting items such as baby clothes or toys. However, we are still accepting any homemade baby blankets for these children. These blankets are such a lovely way of welcoming them into our parish family! Faith Formation Opportunity Starting February 7th we are looking for a 8th Grade catechist on Wednesday evenings. Class runs from 6:00 7:15 pm and last class of the year is April 16. Your pay will be in the form of a lot of smiles from some great kids! Call Susan at , ext.205, if interested. Middle School Lock-In! Friday, February 2-7pm to Saturday, Feb 3rd-8 a.m. We re having our Middle School Lock-In at SJB! This year, we re having a BLAST at SJB with LOTS of food {pizza, and snackage}, tons of fun like an Escape Room, capture the flag, Slime Making, PJ Praise and Worship, Movies, and more! It s going to be a BLAST, so don t wait, registration is happening now!
