1 Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish March 11th, 2018 Parish Office (920) Glendale Avenue Green Bay, WI School Office (920) STATIONS OF THE CROSS Question: Who invented the Stations of the Cross? Answer: The first Stations of the Cross were walked by Jesus himself on the way to Calvary. Known as the "Via Dolorosa" ("The Way of Suffering") or the "Via Crucis" ("The Way of the Cross"), it was marked out from the earliest times and was a traditional walk for pilgrims who came to Jerusalem. The early Christians in Jerusalem would walk the same pathway that Jesus walked, pausing for reflection and prayer. Later, when Christians could not travel to the Holy Land, artistic depictions of "The Way of the Cross" were set up in churches, or outside and Christians would walk from station to station, reading the Gospel account of the Passion, or simply praying and reflecting on each event. While the content or place of each station had changed, the intention was to make a mini-pilgrimage and follow --literally--in the footsteps of Jesus. This devotion became better known in the Middle Ages, and the Franciscans are credited with its spread. Lent is a time when many people make the Stations and some churches present Passion plays or Living Stations. But anyone can pray the Stations at any time. It is a simple and personal reflection on the passion of Jesus and what it means to us. Early and often did the LORD, the God of their fathers, send his messengers to them, for he had compassion on his people and his dwelling place. 2 Corinthians 36:15 We have the Stations of the Cross on March 9th, 16th & 22nd at 7:00pm! Come join us!

3 March 11th, 2018 What just happened here? These words could easily be our prayer as we return from receiving Communion. We watch as others are joined to communion with God and those who are here. We hear the close of the tabernacle door as consecrated hosts are reserved for those who are ill or stop in to pray. We also see the priest or deacon purifying the cups that have been used. During this time, we reflect on something very important that has happened Jesus is in our midst. In what we call the Liturgy of the Word, we have heard the voice of Jesus drawing us away from preoccupation with our own efforts. We have heard the story of men and women who live their faith fully, fruitfully, and courageously. In what we call the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we have joined Jesus in giving thanks. We have heard the invitation Blessed are they who are called to the Supper of the Lamb. We then had a choice. We can boldly, yet naively, walk up to the front of church and pray, I know how weak I have been in letting my every word and action be filled with your love. With your grace, I will welcome each event and word of my life as a gift and look forward to even greater joy because you are with me; Yes, I believe. We can also let ourselves be overcome by familiarity and go through the gestures and then coming to church has not done us much good this week. So, what should we be doing while the priest or deacon purifies the cups? We should be treasuring all that we have heard, letting it warm our hearts, letting it give us strength and courage, letting it propel us into life! Since we have started purifying the chalice and ciboria at the altar, there is a sense of completing something very sacred. May each of us come to treasure more and more this wondrous gift. More than anything, we should be giving thanks and praise. What just happened here! The Parish Mission Planning team from St. John s and twenty two other Pilot Parishes will begin the actual process through a series of webinars linking the various parishes and the Diocese. This week, our Parish Mission Planning team will get their first look at how the planning teams will function. PMP is not a program. It is not the next thing. PMP is a planning process designed to align and mobilize our church, parish, and ministry efforts to being missionary disciples leading all people to the Kingdom of God. PMP embodies the new diocesan vison and mission shared by Bishop Ricken in 2016, as well as his ongoing formation initiatives of Disciples on the way. PMP helps us realize in practical ways the hopes and dreams we have for ourselves, our parishes and schools, and our communities. Growing Future Church Leaders Just as the early disciples traveled on the road to Emmaus with Jesus, today we have future church leaders journeying through the Emmaus program who will ultimately serve as parish lay ministers. Parishes benefit greatly by having lay ministers as Pastoral Associates, Parish Business Managers, Director of Religious Education, and Religious Education Teachers. It takes approximately three years to complete the formation process. On this journey these people experience a remarkable spiritual awakening that they learn to share with others. By participating in classes, workshops, and retreats and seminars, these leaders learn to use their love and skills to become the face of Christ to others. Their opportunity is made possible by the Bishop s Appeal. Many members of our staff and parish completed the formation process not just to enhance their skills for parish ministry but to further their knowledge and practice of their faith. It would not have been possible without your help and support. As of this week, 282 households have donated $55, or 48% of our goal. In just one month we are almost halfway there. Please prayerfully consider making a gift to the Bishop s Appeal. To make a gift to the Bishop s Appeal contact your parish, visit the Bishop s Appeal website at or call Tammy toll-free at ext May God continue to bless you all for all you do!

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton once said, We know certainly that our God calls us to a holy life. We know that he gives us every grace, every abundant grace; and though we are so weak of ourselves, this grace is able to carry us through every obstacle and difficulty. With the sacrament of Confirmation we are given that grace of the Holy Spirit to live a holy, joy-filled life! KERYGMA NIGHT Kerygma The apostolic proclamation of salvation through Jesus Christ. The core message of the Gospel is called the kerygma. The kerygma informs the central mission and identity of the Church and is the identity of every baptized Christian. God is Love and has created us for a personal relationship with Him. Spend an evening looking at your relationship with God, reflecting on where you are at and where you could be. Monday March 19th, 6-7:15pm in the Church There is no cost so bring your family or a friend! So I ask you: Are you looking for empty thrills in life, or do you want to feel a power that can give you a lasting sense of life and fulfillment? Empty thrills or the power of grace? To find fulfillment, to gain new strength, there is a way. It is not a thing or an object, but a person, and he is alive. His name is Jesus Christ. - POPE FRANCIS

Principal s Reflection Mr. Andrew Mulloy As Catholics, we believe the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. We believe the very substance of the bread transforms into the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ. This is a radical belief, but it is one at the core of our faith. So, when our children or our friends ask, What is the Eucharist? we need to be ready to witness faithfully to our belief. When my three-year-olds ask me what the Eucharist is, I quote St. Jacinta from Fatima who called the Eucharist, the hidden baby Jesus. Although it has the outward presence of bread, Jesus is truly present within it. Catholic children s author Annemarie Thimons put it this way: It is like when a mother is pregnant with a little baby. We cannot see the baby in her belly, but the baby is still there, it is real, and it is alive. In the Gospel of John (6:54), Jesus tells us: Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life. This is a big claim by Christ, and it is a big claim by our Church. This Lent, continue to challenge yourself to believe in this great mystery of our faith. Maybe ask yourself the question, How would I explain this to a someone? Thimons, Annemarie. What is the Eucharist? Amor Deus Publishing If you have a pyx at home and no longer need it, please return it to the sacristy or Parish office as we are getting quite low. Thank you! ALL BAKERS IN OUR PARISH The spring booyah/bake sale is only a week away. HOW MUCH MONEY HAS CRS RICE BOWL CONTRIBUTED TO PREVENT HUNGER AND POVERTY AROUND THE WORLD? In its first 40 years, more than $250 million has been given through CRS Rice Bowl to support programs that prevent hunger and poverty around the world. Of that, $62.5 million went to programs in the U.S. through local dioceses and $187.5 million went to CRS programs overseas. HOW MANY COUNTRIES BENEFIT FROM CRS RICE BOWL? Each year CRS Rice Bowl funds are directed to between 40 and 45 countries where CRS operates humanitarian response and development programs. HOW IS THE MONEY USED? Lenten alms go to alleviate hunger and poverty in communities overseas and in the U.S.: seventy-five percent of gifts support CRS humanitarian programs around the world, including in the countries featured in the Lenten calendar. If you have a student who will be going into Middle School or High School this fall, or have a current student eligible to be part of the Faith Formation classes and/or Confirmation preparations next year, we invite you to join us for one of our nights of presentation, preview, and Q & A time with Kym Allex, our Coordinator of Youth Evangelization! The new small group approach for middle school students and how we will be engaging with parents on a weekly basis for further family formation! Our NEW 2 year Confirmation process model for Faith Formation for 9 th -10 th grade with new service component requirements and the NEW Upperclassmen discipleship model for 11 th -12 th grade students! Dates for our Preview and Presentations are: Monday, March 12 th 6-7 p.m. in the Commons Wednesday, March 21 st 7-8 p.m. in the Commons DID YOU KNOW Catechism of the Catholic Church In several of the recent Did You Know definitions, the initials CCC have been used as the resource. Do you know what CCC stands for and what it is? The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) is a deposit of Christian doctrine gathered through a commission of twelve Cardinals and Bishops by Pope John Paul II in The CCC includes all catholic doctrine regarding faith and morals. Used as a point of reference which is based on biblical and liturgical doctrine the CCC has become the norm for teaching the faith. The CCC is based on the four Pillars of the Catholic Church: 1) The Profession of Faith 2) The Celebration of the Christian Mystery (Sacred Liturgy and Sacraments) 3) Life in Christ (The Ten Commandments) 4) Christian Prayer It is easy to read and understand. It helps us to see how Jesus says we should live our lives so that we and the world can become just. We may ask What should we do? or How can I live a just life? The CCC can help you answer those questions. ACTS Bible Study Starting MARCH 26th Have you been thinking about getting involved in one of the many bible studies that are going on? Now is your time! Fair Trade Coffee Lent is a time to get outside of ourselves and our own little world, a time to focus on our relationship with Jesus Christ. We all know the three traditions of lent: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. Maybe this lent, we can include in our prayers the small scale farmers around the world who are trying to support their families with dignity. Maybe this lent, we can fast from indifference towards those less fortunate. Maybe this lent, we can use our financial blessings to bless others. According to Fr Girotti s book, A Shepherd Tends His Flock, Any way that you can reach out to those in need is a powerful means of identifying with Christ who is so present in the poor and the suffering. By supporting our Fair Trade Program here at St John the Baptist, you are supporting the efforts of small scale family farms in Ethiopia, Guatemala, Peru and Bolivia. Also, our partner in promoting Fair Trade, Just Coffee Co-op, donates 1.5% of every purchase we make to Catholic Relief Services. Please consider placing an order. Either call fellow parishioner Diane Strobel at or sjbfairtrade@yahoo.com. Orders placed by 6:30PM Sunday March 11th will be available for pick up in the Family Room after masses the following weekend.
