1 Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist Parish Office 2597 Glendale Avenue School Office (920) Green Bay, WI (920) Our Parish Patron Saint Tiny fingers and toes. A little yawn. A loud cry. An infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. "What will this child be?" It is a question every parent asks time and time again. As first steps are taken, as personalities emerge, as a child shows interest in reading or drawing or climbing, the question is on our lips. "What will this child be?" This question is asked as John the Baptist is born. Will he be a priest like his father? Does his strange, unexpected name signal a departure from that inheritance? Could Elizabeth and Zechariah ever have predicted what would be? Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became strong in spirit." As an adult, John would retreat into the desert to preach repentance. He would attract a large following and eventually attract the attention of the rulers of the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod and would find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be beheaded. But today, he is a child, an infant newly born. On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility required of parents. The character formation, the discipline and encouragement, the violin lessons and soccer practices? every parental effort is subjected to the decisions of the child them self. Even children on a sure track by high school graduation transform under life's circumstances. Entrusting our children to God can be incredibly intimidating. "What will this child be," especially when that transformation lies outside of my control? John the Baptist's story might not have ended as his parents imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of the prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Here is the hope of all Christian parents -- that our children would be raised in such a way that when people meet them, they meet Jesus Christ.

3 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10: The Parish Mission Planning team continues to work through the 12 steps of the planning process outlined by the Diocese. We ve hit the milestone of Step 9, which is taking all of the data collected along with the experience of our diverse team and narrowing the focus down to 3-5 goals for our parish and school. How fortunate we are to have active involvement from a variety of age groups, work experiences and backgrounds to ensure that we are developing goals that will connect with the parish and even further out into the community we live and serve in. If you ve read this far, you deserve a sneak peek! The first goal that we are focused on is: We will carry out Catholic Social Teachings in the Community. These include: Life and Dignity of the Human Person; Call to Family, Community and Participation; Rights and Responsibilities; Options for the Poor and Vulnerable; Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers; Solidarity; and Care for God s Creation. Community is God s desire for us, when we grow in our relationships with others, we re growing in relationship with Him! Does that seem like a big undertaking?? It did to us as well. Step 10 in the process is to identify the action steps that will allow our parish to make that goal happen, along with who will be accountable and to identify the right way to measure our success along the way. Do you have ideas formulating? We d love to hear them. Questions about this process? Please touch base with anyone of us. We are not random accidents. We are special creations and wonderfully made. Each of us brings a unique twist to the one shot at life that we are given. As people of faith and children of God, we are asked to use our specialness to announce God's kingdom. Each of us reveals a unique part of God's face. Each day presents opportunities to communicate our faith to others and to reveal God's mercy. We have the means to point the way to Christ. How can we show Jesus to others today? STEWARDSHIP TREE The Stewardship Tree will be up again in the narthex starting next weekend. This year we are partnering with the Giving Tree in Howard/Suamico. We are asking for school supply donations for their Back to School event. The Giving Tree will be filling backpacks with supplies for children in need. Please take an Owl, Butterfly or Bumble Bee off the tree, purchase the item or items listed and return the school supplies listed the following weekend. There are many items and all of various values. Please pray about what your able to do for these children. Thank you for helping children in need in our area! Your filled tubes or additional contributions can be deposited in the Globe. The money collected for this cause will be used to purchase food supplies to be used at this year s MobilePack event coming up in October. Last year through the efforts of 12 area churches over 500,000 meals were packaged during this 4 day event. Opportunities to participate in the MobilePack Event will be announced at a later date. 5 The Lord is calling YOU to an INCREDIBLE ADVENTURE! A few months ago, I (Kym Allex) invited our parishioners to join us on an incredible Holy Spirit-led movement to evolve our parish s Youth Formation process for Middle School and High School Youth. Praise God and His Goodness, I ve received several initial calls, meet ups, and interests for more information! But our need is GREAT, and we need MORE mentors for next year who are willing to walk alongside our teens. Why should I get involved? Well, if ANY of these 5 points apply to you, why not come to our info meeting and learn more? If you re ready to share your love of the Catholic Faith with those who are seeking authentic relationships in small groups, this is for YOU! If you can smile and show God s love to all those you meet, this is for You! If you know your faith, even the slightest, and you re willing to be humble to say, I don t have all the answers, but I ll lead you to someone who does, this is for YOU! If you have ever experienced God s love in your own life, and you know want that love to light up your week, this is for YOU!! If you re nervous to say Yes to something that means you will grow exponentially in your personal faith journey, this is for YOU! Well, my friends, our next opportunity for interested Mentors (previously known as catechists) Mentor Information Meeting is on July 11 th from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the Upper Ministry Center. If you need more information, connect with Kym Allex, our Coordinator of Youth Evangelization ext 214 or kallex@sjbh.org

6 SCHOOL NEWS School may be out but the good news doesn t stop! Faith Leaders: Two SJB Alumni Every year, Notre Dame Academy gives out a number of scholarships and awards to students. This year, two of NDA s most prestigious leadership awards were presented to SJB alumni. Congratulations Christopher Kapic and Sam Schmitz! DID YOU KNOW Rediscovering the Corporal Works of Mercy Jesus' words in Matthew 25 are not about us at all -but about our neighbors. The seven Corporal Works of Mercy are a part of Catholic tradition and for many of us, these were part of our upbringing. In today s world we often get too busy to give them much thought, yet they are rooted in one of the most beloved gospels, Matthew 25: 31-46, the Last Judgment parable: When I was hungry, you gave me to eat. In this powerful scripture, Jesus gives us our marching orders as Christians this is what we are to do if we are his followers. His words are not about how we are to pray or dress or how often or even where to go to Church. As a matter of fact, his words are not about us at all but about our neighbors. Chaperone? Right Here at St. John s? Really? YES, I can do that! Kym Allex is looking for a few more adult chaperones for The Corporal Works of Mercy are based in this gospel, the one in which Jesus identifies himself squarely with the poor and marginalized: Whatever you did for one of these least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Jesus message to us: I have loved you and given myself for you. Follow my example and love the way I have loved you. What we are called to today in the midst of our modern world and busy lives - is to look beyond our own busy-ness and pay attention to those around us who are in need. Middle School Day Camp July Seven Corporal Works of Mercy: Can t help the entire week? No problem! You can choose to help out one or all 5 days. Estimated times are 9a 5p. You would NOT have to lead any groups or activities, just help keep an eye on things and maybe help with snack-time. Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked/give alms to the poor Visit the prisoners Shelter the homeless Visit the sick Bury the dead There will be a brief meeting on July 11 from 6 7p but please contact Sherry Van Helvoirt ext. 206 if you are interested in helping out. Beginning in next weeks bulletin, each of these seven Corporal Works of Mercy will be discussed further. Next week: Corporal Work of Mercy: Feed the Hungry
