3 A SINCERE THANK YOU TO ALL! People have been asking, Were you tired after that great celebration of your Fiftieth Anniversary last weekend? Let me tell you how tired I was. Having just cut a piece of that delicious chocolate cake I broke off a piece with my fork. Well, when I woke up two hours later, I found the fork on the floor next to the chair. The bite of cake was still on it. I fell asleep just that quickly. Every bit of the celebration was wonderful and, many of you were able to be there for mass and many stayed for supper as well. We wanted a celebration that would involve as many parishioners as we could. And, that it was! The assistance that we got from so many was outstanding. It reminded me of Hal Tust s response when someone says thank you to him. That s just what you expect when you come to St. John s. I should have called out about ten of my high school classmates who were here and a number of other Friends and neighbors from Marinette. There were about four tables of relatives from both sides of my family. What a great honor to have bishops Ricken, Banks and Morneau attend, as well as many of the priests whose friendship I have treasured throughout these years. I was grateful to see all the deacons and their wives with whom I have shared much during these years. And all of you, one way or another, were present as well. To our incredibly generous staff and untold volunteers who made this wonderful day happen. I will be forever grateful. Please let the beautiful video you saw at mass today be a tribute to you as well. There is no doubt that the faith, character and personality of a priest shapes the parish. There is, likewise, no doubt that priests are shaped by the joys and sorrows that the parishioners share with the priests. You can access both that video and many pictures from the day by going to our website at and following the links. COME JOIN THE SCHOOL FAMILIES FOR HOLY HOUR! January 6:30 There is nothing more beautiful than watching our children worship at the feet of Jesus! Please come join us for an hour as we spend time adoring Jesus in His presence while we listen to beautiful readings and inspirational music! You are also welcome to come anytime during the day for adoration. It s a wonderful time to spend some intimate and quiet time talking with JESUS. CHRSITMAS EVE 4:00pm Mass Fr. Scott Music: Living Waters 6:30pm Mass Fr. Scott Music: Josh, Angela and Carrie 11:00pm Mass Fr. John Music: Christopher, Olivia and Alexis CHRISTMAS DAY 9:00am Mass Fr. John Music: Karen and Open to All No matter the mass you attend, PLEASE PARTICIAPTE in both prayer and song and help use celebrate the birth of our SAVIOR!
4 ADVENT IDEAS Is advent getting away on you? These weeks can get so filled with obligations, baking, shopping, etc. and before you know it..it s Christmas! It s not too late to celebrate the reason for the season! Here are a few ideas that you can do with your family to bring the focus back where it belongs or to continue keeping the focus where it should be. Make a Prayer Garland Cut out strips of paper and write the name of someone you want to pray for on each strip and make it into a chain. Hang it somewhere in the house. Make a Birthday Card for Jesus and put it by your advent wreath, nativity scene or tree. Make cookies and bring them to a neighbor Clean out your toy box and give some of your toys to St. Vincent DePaul Make a Christmas Card for someone you love and tell them why you love them Watch the Nativity story and talk about what happened Buy some dog/cat treats and bring them to an animal shelter Have pancakes and hot chocolate for dinner and share what Christmas means to you Mark your Calendar! Below are the upcoming dates that you will be able to get your Blood Pressure checked after Mass January 13 & 14 February 10 & 11 March 10 & 11 Are you new to St. John s? Have you registered? We look forward to meeting you and sharing all the wonderful things about St. John s! We will be available in the Fireplace Room located on the west end of the Narthex, TODAY after 8am & 10am Mass to register new members. If you did not have your picture taken at the time of your registration (in the past 6 months), please stop by the Fireplace Room after Mass so we can include you on our New Member board. We look forward to meeting you! If you have any questions please contact Katie kwesthoven@sjbh.org or call ext. 204 Worship Jesus twice in one day! This year the 4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve fall on the same day, Sunday. Some people have asked about their Mass obligation on this day. Your Sunday obligation falls under the category of the 4th Sunday of Advent, not Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve is a separate celebration that doesn't start until 4pm Sunday the 24th. When you attend the Christmas Eve Mass that covers Christmas not the Mass for Sunday. 4:30pm Mass on Saturday does fulfill your Sunday obligation as well. So, for 2017 we have the opportunity to spend the day with Jesus two times on Sunday! And who wouldn t want to spend that time with our Savior on a day that we praise and worship the Good News he has brought to our lives!

RSVP- Please let us know if you will be coming by Friday January 5th! Call or text Katie at or kwesthoven@sjbh.org! Thank you! Thank you to all parishioners who gave donations for our college care packages! Your generosity is greatly appreciated! We sent out 37 packages for our college students to know that we care and are praying for them while they finish up their semester. Thank you also to La Java and Dairy Queen, on Glendale Ave, for their generous donations! Please frequent them as a way to show our appreciation! Principal s Reflection Andrew Mulloy The Reason for the Season Advent is meant to be a time of peace and preparation, unfortunately it is often a time of stress for families. In a recent Compass article, Elisa Tremblay, Director of Marriage and Family Life for the Diocese of Green Bay, challenged readers to remember what gifts they gave or received last Christmas and to try to recall what they had to eat. She then asked us to remember who we spent time with last Christmas. Her point was that the focus of the season should be on growing together as a family and not on all the other stuff. Mother Theresa said, The child is the beauty of God present in the world, that greatest gift to a family. When we visit the crèche (a representation of the scene of Jesus Christ s birth) and join the Holy Family in adoring the Christ child this season, may we stop for a moment and seek to see Christ in our own family. There will be many meals, treats, and toys this season, but may the children in your life be the greatest gift and blessing.

7 Preparing to make your New Year s Resolutions? Consider making them Spiritual resolutions! Thinking about your New Year s Resolution this year? Why not consider improving your SPIRITUAL well-being through resolving to make positive, small changes in your life that also honors God on a daily basis. Ideas for commitment to improve spiritual resolutions include: Doing small acts of kindness/stewardship that help someone in need (neighbor, donating to a food pantry, etc.) Pray every day at your best time; Read bible passages daily (Resources such as the Magnificat or Our Daily Bread can assist with this) Get involved in a church ministry Participate in a bible study, and share your faith with friends. Ask the Lord for His help in transforming you. Resolving to make a difference at home, at work, the marketplace, on the roads and even at church will make a positive impact in our life!
