1 Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish March 18th, 2018 Parish Office (920) Glendale Avenue Green Bay, WI School Office (920) KERYGMA NIGHT Kerygma The apostolic proclamation of salvation through Jesus Christ. HOLY THURSDAY NIGHT ADORATION Each year, our bishop and those who would like to join him, visit seven area churches during the hours of night adoration following the Mass for Holy Thursday. St. John s is one of the seven area churches that will be visited for a short prayer service. We are encouraging as many as possible to plan on adoration after 7:00pm Mass up until 11:00pm. The Pilgrimage will be here at 9:30pm. They will also be visiting St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton, St. Jude, St. Agnes, Nativity of Our Lord, St. Patrick Oratory and close with a visit at midnight to St. Francis Xavier Cathedral. There will be complimentary bus transportation starting and ending at the Cathedral, however, anyone is welcomed to caravan separately along the route for all or part of the pilgrimage. For any questions or to reserve a seat on the bus calling Heidi at The core message of the Gospel is called the kerygma. The kerygma informs the central mission and identity of the Church and is the identity of every baptized Christian. God is Love and has created us for a personal relationship with Him. Spend an evening looking at your relationship with God, reflecting on where you are at and where you could be. Monday March 19th, 6-7:15pm in the Church There is no cost so bring your family or a friend! So I ask you: Are you looking for empty thrills in life, or do you want to feel a power that can give you a lasting sense of life and fulfillment? Empty thrills or the power of grace? To find fulfillment, to gain new strength, there is a way. It is not a thing or an object, but a person, and he is alive. His name is Jesus Christ. - POPE FRANCIS

3 March 18th, 2018 Bishop s Appeal by the Numbers Someone asked me last weekend how the Bishop s Appeal impacts the lives of the people in our parish. I said I knew of a few ways but that I would write a bulletin article this week that would come up with a more complete answer. According to the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese, the Bishop s Appeal reaches out and impacts the lives of thousands of people every year. Here are some interesting facts to illustrate how the Diocese inspires disciples, and how the Bishop s Appeal is making a difference in the lives of all of us: 54 Catholic schools shared our faith (48 elementary, 6 high school) we have one of these in our parish. 156 Parishes celebrated their liturgies throughout the year. We celebrate liturgy weekly, even when it snows. 842 Couples were joined in marriage. 17 marriages celebrated here in the last fiscal year. 2,975 Members of our Diocese passed away. 41 funerals were celebrated in our parish. 2,461 Adults and young people were confirmed in their faith. 60 youth and adults were confirmed in our parish last year 2,853 Children and adults received Jesus through First Communion. 86 First Communions in our parish 2,967 Infants and adults joined our parish communities through Baptism. 84 were baptized in our parish. 9,127 Students participated in Catholic Schools. 278 attended our school. 18,351 Students took part in Religious Education classes. 512 were enrolled in our Faith Formation Programs. 302,166 Catholics worshiped in Diocesan parishes plus are members of our parish. In each of these areas the Bishop s Appeal impacts the ministries that inspire disciples. We are just starting to see the many different ways the Bishop s Appeal impacts each and every member of our parish and even the people who live in our community and beyond. I want to thank all of you for helping us make our goal these last three years. And I am extremely grateful for those who have already given this year. As of Tuesday, we have 376 households who have donated $81, or 70% of our goal. Last year at this time we were at 320 households and $67, Even though we still have a way to go, we are ahead of last year s numbers. Once again my thanks to those who have already given and my prayers that more of you will discern and decide to make your contribution to the Bishop s Appeal. Your gifts help more than you will ever know. Only God knows! God bless you this Lent. Dear People of God, The image of a journey back to God has influenced much of my Lenten thinking this time. Actually, journey may be too soft a word. Maybe a mountain climb or a marathon run might be a better image. It starts off easy enough. The first leg has us just beginning As the climb or run becomes higher and higher, so, too the difficulty. Our Lent began with the promise of Ash Wednesday. It spent several Sundays in speaking of what we will be doing if we are faithful to Lent. The second leg holds out what kingdom living might actually be. The kingdom of God is about a changed reality, a different way of thinking. It is about Now being the time of favor, the time of salvation. As we run the race, or stay with the journey, we discover a foundation for our moral lives each day. We begin to answer the question: what difference did Jesus make? What difference does Jesus make? The moral virtues theological and cardinal. The theological virtues are capacities to be developed and strengthened by work in the disciple s mind, heart, head and soul Faith is God s gift that enables us to believe in God and the one he sent. Hope is trust in God and his promises. Charity enables us to love God above all and treat our neighbors like we would like to be treated. Without God s grace, these virtues would not be available to us. Then there are the Cardinal Virtues, because they are hinge virtues and lead to others. These are human abilities that help us live for God. Prudence enables us to make the right choices. Justice give what is due to God and neighbor. Courage is the means to stand fast in unpopular situations. Temperance is moderation, keeping our desires in honorable limits. This is what Jesus died for. We often take that deep breath because the race or the journey is taking the best we have. We know that this is what the kingdom of God is about and we are being asked, Will you follow me? These are the strengths that we will need!

4 March 18th, 2018 PARENT INFO MEETING Wednesday, March 21st 7-8 p.m. in the Commons DID YOU KNOW Consubstantial When The Roman Missal was revised several years ago the phrase consubstantial with the Father replaced one in Being with the Father in the Creed. Few people would use this word con versationally and is difficult to under stand. The first three letters con means together with. It stands for: the same identical substance, nature or es sence. When we refer to the Trinity, the Catholic Church uses the word consubstantial to describe the relationship between God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. One source explains it as God the Father with God the Son are both God one God in three unique Persons (Holy Spirit). The church reminds us of the importance of professing that the Father and the Son are the exact same sub stance. That means we believe that what they are made of, what they both are at their very core, is the same. Just as Jesus Himself said: 'The Father and I are one (John 10:30). Check out the CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church), paragraphs 242, 262, 467, and 663, for some further ex planation.
