1 Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish Parish Office 2597 Glendale Avenue School Office (920) Green Bay, WI (920) GOSPEL REFLECTION "What do you wish me to do for you?" Jesus asks a similar question in different Gospel passages, but the request of James and John is not repeated on any other occasion. "Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left." They ask not for knowledge of God, not for crooked limbs to be straightened nor for the blind to see. They ask for power and authority. Jesus' response should trouble them. "You do not know what you are asking." "Can you drink the cup that I drink?" Jesus asks. "They said to him, 'We can.'" But what is Christ's cup? Could James and John have possibly known it or understood it here at the height of Jesus' ministry? Jesus' cup is the cup of trial, of difficulty, of public ridicule. His final, thirsting sip occurs as he hangs on the cross. In Christ's kingdom, drinking his cup and participating in his life are not the sharing of power the way we are accustomed. Jesus flips their paradigm. "Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all." The cup of Jesus is the cup of giving oneself. "The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." As Christians, how easy it can be to want the acclaim of good deeds, the gratitude for volunteering, the attention for donating to the church. "It shall not be so among you." If you are overlooked, offer thanks to God for imitating Jesus, rather than bitter complaint at someone else's oversight. Look for opportunities to do good needs unnoticed. 3 LIVE YOUR FAITH Fr. Girotti Don t Bite the Hand that Feeds You. Ouch! Don t bite! It hurts when our dog or cat bites, even more so when those we love hurt us. Why is it that we so often treat the ones we love the most so poorly? And Jesus? How do we treat Him in our lives? Do we say His name in our prayers, or does His name only come up when we accidentally bash our hand with hammer? Do we worship Him on Sunday at Mass or throw a ball around a field instead. Come to the fourth installment of Live Your Faith, a live 15 part series at our parish where we will discuss the Second and Third Commandments and how we can give God the glory in our lives. And not bite the divine hand that feeds us our daily bread. The Feast of St. John Paul II On October 21st, we celebrate the pope who inspired the world! Born Karol Wojtyla in Krakow, Pope John Paul II became the firstever Polish pope. He came of age in the early 20th century and lived through both the Nazi and communist occupations of Poland. His resistance activities were cultural, operating an underground theater company and entering a secret seminary. Karol was ordained a priest in 1946 and later a bishop. He was elected pope in As pope, the interests that captured his heart as a young man continued -- his pastoral concern for young people, his philosophical emphasis on the human person, and his devotion to Mary and to the mercy of God. St. John Paul II, pray for us! Principal s Reflection Andrew Mulloy Our 4-year-old early childhood students were recently asked what they wanted to be when they grow up. Not surprisingly, most of the boys, including my own son, wanted to be superheroes. Superheroes are popular and have been for generations. Their stories are built around the desire to see good triumph over evil. And when the protagonist wears a cape, it s even more fun. I think this predictable response points out something profound about the choices parents make. Parents make choices about what kind of images, toys, and stories we allow into our children s lives. These things have a powerful impact on the way children see the world and on the values they will hold as they mature. Are you consciously sharing your faith in the entertainment choice you make for your children or are you allowing secular society to choose what they see and the worldview they embrace? Are we telling stories, watching videos, and surrounding our children with images that pass on the values of our faith and family values? As you choose media and guide your children in their interests, be sure to include the great stories of our faith. Consider selecting videos on the lives of the saints, the Bible, or those based on Christian values. Encourage your family to place holy images on your walls and on your electronic devices. I hope all our students, both boys and girls, want to be superheroes--the force of good which triumphs over evil. More importantly, I want each of our children to be a saint. I want each of them to be guided by strong Christian values and to one day join Jesus Christ in heaven. 4 Meet the 6 Saints that were Canonized In October Pope Francis Canonized six saints on October 14th. The next several weeks we will give you some information about each one so you can get better acquainted with our saints Pope Paul VI ( ) Pope Paul VI, presided over the modernizing yet polarizing church reforms of the 1960s. He is best known for having presided over the final sessions of the Second Vatican Council, the church meetings that opened up the Catholic Church to the world. Under his auspices, the church agreed to allow liturgy to be celebrated in the vernacular rather than in Latin and called for greater roles for the laity and improved relations with people of other faith. Paul is also remembered for his two most important encyclicals, or teaching documents, which have had a profound effect on the church: One denounced the mounting inequality between rich and poor, and the other reaffirmed the Catholic church s opposition to artificial contraception. From his bed he participated in Sunday Mass, after communion, the pope suffered a massive heart attack and died 3 hours later. Box City Poverty Simulation Oct 26-27th Our Middle School and High School students are invited to participate in the 1st Annual Box City Poverty Lock-In. This lock -in helps us better understand poverty in our local area through the lens of homelessness of Howard/Green Bay through the Catholic Social Teaching of Solidarity. Our students are asked to find sponsors (family and friends) who are willing to help them meet their personal goals of $50$75 that will all go towards Feed My Starving Children this year. If you would like to sponsor a student, please drop off any donations by Friday, October 26th to the parish offices in an envelope to Office of Youth Evangelization. If you d like to join us and help as our group grows in better understanding of this valuable Catholic Social Teaching, please contact Kym Allex in the parish offices.

5 FOOD DONATIONS Any food items donated in our basket in the Narthex are given to the Howard/Suamico Giving Tree, which helps all families in our area, including St. John s. Ongoing needs of the pantry are: dish soap, Kleenex, cooking oil, sugars-all kinds-bar soap, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Thank you to the Social Concerns volunteers who bring the items to the pantry to be distributed. GOD BLESS! Proko-Wall is proud to participate in the Coats for Kids campaign sponsored by the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots sponsored by the United States Marine Corp. We have the Coats for Kids and Toys for Tots receptacles in our front foyer and encourage the community to drop off a gently used coats and unwrapped toys. From September 26 through November 4, you re invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life. 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You re also invited to stand and peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil in the public right of way outside of Planned Parenthood at 2605 S.
