1 Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish Parish Office (920) Glendale Avenue Green Bay, WI School Office (920) From March 6 through April 14, you are invited to join other Christians for 40 Day for Life 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You are also invited to stand and peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil at: Planned Parenthood (in the public right-of-way outside) 2605 S. Oneida St 12:00pm 2:00pm This is also an opportunity to help spread the word about this important community outreach. If you d like more information, and especially if you would like to volunteer to help, please contact What can I do to help stop abortions? With the recent ruling in New York, it has become even more urgent for us to do whatever we can to help stop abortion. With momentum like this where will it stop? And will it? So many of us are devastated by these rulings and don t know what to do. As Catholics, we need to step up and speak up! Many agree that abortion has been allowed to grow by the silence of people who don t want to tell others what to do or don t want to offend. Being loving and respectful is always good, but being so polite we are afraid to speak out can actually encourage abortion. Here are just a few ideas of action that can be taken: Pray! Get involved Join with those who are on the frontlines of stopping abortion. It is one of the most effective ways to contribute to the effectiveness of the pro-life movement. Locally, a pregnancy resource center can likely use your help, whether through cash donations, or donating time counseling or buying diapers and baby supplies. You can also become a sidewalk counselor by joining 40 Days for Life. Educate yourself and become a pro-life apologist It s much simpler than it may seem to be well versed in the logic and argument of the pro-life movement. Much of the abortion rhetoric is fueled by emotional arguments and fallacies of logic. People support the right to abortion without actually understanding what they support. Having an understanding of these issues can win over even the most emotional or intellectual person, fostering a culture of life, and maybe even being a voice that is powerful enough to make the most stubborn of people turn. Suggested Reading is Unplanned by Abby Johnson. Use your voice Speak out in every arena where you have a chance! This may mean more than just reposting social media articles and pictures, but writing updates from your own bank of knowledge and heart on the issues. Put your views out there in loving ways to send messages to everyone who hears whether via social media, water cooler discussions, lunch gatherings, or any other occasion and you become safe for them to approach. The pro-abortion voices are loud and proud. Use your voice to be as loud and proud about saving lives! Support Adoption Donate time or money to adoption agencies or consider adoption yourself. Take a Stand Write to representatives in the House or Senate. Pray! And He said to them, This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer. ~ Mark 9:29

THAT MAN IS YOU THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14 6:00am Presenter: Jason Evert - World renowned speaker & author Subject: The strength to serve God has stamped into our own bodies our calling as men. Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men. Luke 5:10 Dear Brothers and Sisters, In today s Gospel, Simon Peter and his fellow fishermen have a frustrating night of fishing. Simon questions Jesus after He suggests they lower their nets and give it another shot. Why on earth would they catch anything now? Jesus put these fishermen to the test. He created a situation so the disciples would learn to trust Him; and Simon is deeply sorry for doubting Jesus who, of course, forgives him. God s mercy is there for all who ask forgiveness and all who have faith in Him. Furthermore, Jesus is telling the fishermen they have the ability to transform the world! Here in our Parish, we have fantastic youth ministers and faith formation educators who are catching young souls to be disciples of Christ. Youth Ministry does the very thing Jesus did with the fishermen - they bring young people into experiences where they see the face of Jesus in others, where they encounter God s mercy in an intimate way and are forever changed because of these events. Here at St. John the Baptist we have young people who have attended Mission trips, March for Life, Youth Jam, Green Bay Youth Conference, etc.. Students who attend Youth Ministry programs sponsored by the Bishop s Appeal tend to become very connected with their Catholic faith and they truly become the future of our Church. Please make your gift to the Bishop s Appeal today and help reach out to build young disciples of Christ! Contact our parish office, use the pledge card you received at home, or visit the Bishop s Appeal websitesitewwwwwwwwwww.catholicfoundationgb.org/give to make a gift. Thank you for your gift to the Bishop s Appeal and for your support of St. John the Baptist.
4 St. John s LENTEN MISSION MINI-RETREAT March 9 13 Who: Fr. Kevin Schneider, SJ March 9/10: Mass with Fr. Kevin. Grace: Did you see it? God offers us so much in our lives and in the world that we miss...and God continues to offer more Prayer helps us see it a bit more often. March pm: Life with the Lord; Imagine that! A way of praying includes use of the imagination. Can you place yourself at the scene of a Gospel story? What do you see? What do you hear? What do you do? March pm: A Sinner, Yet Called! Reconciliation is a recognition of ourselves as sinners. And we are called by our Lord to continue to serve others. The grace we ask for is the Lord s help. We need the Lord to help us serve others. March pm: Doing God s will, not mine...what? We are so driven to serve only our own will. God s invitation is to do His will. How can we check our actions more often throughout the day to do the will of God more often? March :00pm: Go Forth & Set the World Afire with God s Love The question now is so what? What difference will this parish retreat make in my life, or the life of our faith community? What are the invitations and challenges for our lives together? Ending with Mass of Sending Forth. 5 Principal s Reflection Andrew Mulloy Enrollment Our school enrollment for is off to a very strong start. Thank you for your prayers and support of our school. We would not be able to provide this great ministry without the support of our welcoming parish community. Please encourage anyone you know considering our school to register or schedule a tour soon. Preschool is filling up very fast, so please register your 3 or 4 year-old soon. Annual Each year, our school hosts an auction night. This is our biggest and most important fundraiser. The auction s financial success increases our capacity to provide students new technology, financial assistance for families, and facility improvement. Thanks to you, we have had many successful auctions over the past years. This year, the annual auction will have a Hawaiian theme and be called The Big Kahuna. It will be held Saturday, March 2 at the Rock Garden. The doors will open at 5 p.m. There will be a cash raffle with a $10,000 grand prize (tickets available in the school office), and a heavy appetizer and cash bar. Your donations help make our auction successful. You can help by donating a basket or standalone items to the auction within the next two weeks. Purchase your ticket on the school website for $25. Wondering how your business can help? There are several corporate sponsorship options available. Contact Andrew Mulloy at amulloy@gracesystem.org for more information. We look forward to seeing you March 2. Thank you for making The Big Kahuna a huge success. For more information, log on to the school website: sjbhschool.org
6 DID YOU KNOW Washing of the Hands: Entering the Holy of Holies The Old Testament outlines the ritual of hand (and feet) washing the Levites and priests went through before entering the Holy of Holies, also known as the Sanctuary (Ex 30:17-21; NM 8:7). In Palms 24:3-4, the "ritual hand-washing symbolizes the internal cleansing of heart required before a person could draw near to God's presence in the Sanctuary." Just as the Levitical priests washed their hands before entering the Holy of Holies, priests today wash their hands before entering the most sacred moment of changing the bread and wine into Christ's body and blood (the consecration). At Mass, the priest recites these words while washing his hands: "Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin" (see PS 41:2). After the priest washes his hands, he prays: "Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty Father." The words "my sacrifice" represent Christ's sacrifice made present through the ordained priest ("in the person of Christ'). The word "your" refers to the entire Church in union with Christ in the Mass. The congregation responds: "May the Lord accept this sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of His name for our good and the good of all His holy Church." This response acknowledges "how both sacrifices--christ's and their own--will be united and offered to the Father through the hands of the priest." FOREST IMPROVEMENTS The gardening/forestry group would like to improve the forest at St. John's by planting more woodland and wetland wild flowers for all to enjoy. Would you and your family be willing to help us plant more woodland and wetland wild flowers in the church/school forest in April? You can pick your own day and time to volunteer and you will only be given a small area to work. Call or kfsikora@sbcglobal.net, if you would like to help in any way.
