3 Keep those lamps burning. As I was preparing for a wedding two weeks ago, Fr. Scott cheerfully let me know that he would be working out in the rectory basement for awhile. Foolishly I replied, Do a little exercise for me. Now, Fr. Scott s weight lifting will not make me more muscular. Nor would riding my stationary bike make Fr. Scott any stronger. Each one must do his/her own lifting, treadmill running or stationary bike riding to obtain their desired results. That is the same message we heard from Mathew 25:1-12. Oil fuels a lamp to make it burn and glow. Much the same, active faith, hope and charity fuel our hearts and sets them on fire to provide our life with clear direction in our walk with God. But it is up to us to do the work to nourish our relationship with God. I used to really hesitate when asking the people of the parish for money. However, once I started to understand that we have money for giving, time for praying and talent for helping, it became much easier. We have all these things on loan and must give an account of our stewardship of God s gifts (Mathew 25:14-30) Stewardship giving is an intentional choice according to one s financial condition. It is independent from what the parish might need to function. However, stewardship giving is simply because you and I need to give. We know that you are part of our parish family because you value what St. John s is about and want to see it continue to grow and flourish. Together we can make this happen! The chart below is to be used as a guideline to your giving. Every household has different circumstances that may allow them to give more or less than the chart indicates. Again, it is only meant as a guideline. If you have already pledged this year, please accept our thanks for all that you do. If you have not done so, I invite you to become an active member of the parish by your stewardship contribution. Please pray on it and start somewhere. Thank you! A Steward s Guide Weekly Contribution Annual Income 3% 4% 5% $20,000 $8 $12 $15 $19 $30,000 $12 $17 $23 $29 $40,000 $15 $23 $31 $39 $50,000 $19 $29 $38 $48 $60,000 $23 $35 $46 $58 $70,000 $27 $40 $54 $67 $80,000 $31 $46 $62 $77 $90,000 $35 $52 $69 $87 $100,000 $39 $58 $77 $96 The chart above is a guide. We depend upon and are grateful for whatever you prayerfully can share. Make no mistake about it. Giving money does not get us on the fast-track to God. It s not like a bribe to get our way without doing what is right or expected of us. Giving money does allow untold wonderful relationships to be made due to the various ministries of the parish.

4 WHAT IS ADVENT? Advent is a time for us to prepare for Christmas, when we celebrate the fulfillment of our longing for the Savior with the birth of Jesus! It last for 4 weeks beginning four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. During this time, we observe a season of prayer, and reflection followed by anticipate, hope and joy. Each Sunday during Advent we light a candle on the Advent Wreath. What does the Advent wreath represent? Circle of the Wreath The circular shape of the wreath, without beginning or end, symbolizes God s complete and unending love for us a love that sent his Son into the world to redeem us from the curse of sin. It also represents eternal life which becomes ours through faith in Jesus Christ. Candles Usually 3 purple (royalty) and one pink (Rejoice Christmas is near!) The symbolic meaning of each candle can vary but it is often: Hope (expectation of what is to come); Love (sometimes called the Bethlehem Candle); Joy (often called Mary s Candle); Peace (often called the Angels Candle) LOOKING AHEAD. IMMACULATE CONCEPTION MASS December 7th Adoration until 5:30pm (No Holy Hour) 6:30pm Fr. Scott December 8th 8:30pm Fr. John December 9/10 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 4:30pm Saturday Fr. Scott 11:00pm Fr. John December 25 Christmas Day 9:00am Fr. John IMMACULATE CONCEPTION (Holy Day of Obligation) December 7th (6:30pm) & 8th (8:30am) The Immaculate Conception of Mary means, that Mary was conceived "Immaculate", without the stain of original sin. Mary was conceived by normal biological means in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne, but God acted upon her soul, keeping it "immaculate. Adam and Eve's sin was inherited by all other human beings, but God spared the Mother of His Son. This is stated in the first book of the Bible. Then Yahweh God said to the snake, because you have done this, accursed be you of all animals wild and tame!... I shall put enmity between you and the Woman, and between your offspring and hers; it will bruise your head and you will strike its heel. (Genesis 3: 14-15). The Woman, God referred to, was Mary, and her Offspring - Jesus. The sinless mother the Immaculate Conception of Mary was in the divine plan of God from the very inception of the world! God loved us so much that He planned to send His son through this spotless mother. Hail Mary Full of Grace!

Why? First, Advent has been picked up by secular society and touted as a time of shopping, North Pole fairy tales, and decorating. Next, we go to Mass and see that both the priest and the altar are both dressed in purple the Lenten color of penance. Yet we know that Advent is not a time of penance in the same way Lent is. It s easy to see how we can get confused. So what is Advent supposed to be? Advent is a time of preparation for the birth of Christ and for His second coming. It is a time to look back on our year and see how we can improve. Despite the chaos of holiday preparation, this liturgical season is set aside as a time of quiet and stillness. A time to slow down and take time to pray and grow close to Jesus Christ. Elves and snowmen are fun to decorate with, but don t forget to set aside a special place for a nativity scene. Perhaps your family could place an Advent wreath on your dinner table and make it part of your meal prayer. Consider setting aside a time to pray as a family, attend a Tuesday evening Mass, or take advantage of a reconciliation service. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to highlight Jesus--the reason for the season. At St. John the Baptist School, we will celebrate the Advent season in a number of ways. This week, we had a reconciliation service, where students and staff were able to receive the Sacrament. Each week, we will have an Advent wreath prayer where we light the candles in anticipating Christ s coming at Christmas and at the end of time. We will also be decorating a Jesse Tree. Though a Jesse tree may look like a Christmas tree, it isn t. The Jesse tree helps children understand the story of the Bible leading up to the birth of Christ. Please pray for our school children this season, that Advent might not only be a time of fun and presents but a time to prepare their hearts for Christ. The Holy SEAS - December 5, 12, 19 at 6pm Our Lady of St Willebrord Mon, Dec. 11, Midnight mass Tues, Dec. 12 6:00 am, 7:15 am, 12:05 pm, 6:00 pm Mass

8 ATTENTION WOMEN OF THE PARISH The winter booyah/bake sale is fast approaching. The Catholic Women/Christian Mothers are asking all women of the parish to donate baked goods for this event. If possible please bring donated items in smaller quantities. For example, instead of bringing a 9x13 pan of bars, could you divide them up on separate plates? Items can be dropped off in the little kitchen in church on Saturday, Dec. 9 or on Sunday, Dec. 10th in the school where the booyah will be sold. All proceeds go towards the needs of the parish. Thank you for supporting our organization. Join us for the Sacrament of Reconciliation Wednesday, December 6 th at 7pm in Church The Sacrament of Reconciliation celebrates a particular facet of the journey, the recognition of sin and grace at work in us, and the mercy of God continually drawing us to repentance, change of heart and ever-deeper friendship with God. (A Mystagogy of Sacrament: Saying Amen)
