1 Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish Parish Office (920) Glendale Avenue Green Bay, WI School Office (920) Question: If Jesus didn't sin, why did he need to be baptized? Answer: From the earliest days of St. John the Baptist, baptism has been a sign of repentance and forgiveness of sins. Now Jesus has instituted it as a sacrament, with real power to cleanse us from original sin and adopt us as children of God. But if Jesus wasn't affected by original sin, nor did he willingly choose sin, why would he need to be baptized? The Catechism lists four primary reasons for the Incarnation. One is that "the Word became flesh to be our model of holiness" (CCC 459). St. John Paul II wrote that "all of Christ's life was a continual teaching." In other words, many of Jesus' actions were not only for the action itself, but to model certain things for us. In becoming man, Jesus is not so loft that he expects things of us he isn't willing to do himself. We see this most poignantly in his passion and death. In his baptism, Jesus identifies with sinners and gives us a model of what we ought to do repent, be cleansed, and receive the grace of God! LIVE THE LITURGY At the baptism of Jesus, a voice came from heaven saying, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." Through Baptism, Jesus' identity as God's Son is revealed and understood. He knows very clearly who he is. Baptism does the same for us. It gives us our identity as daughters and sons of God. We have the wonderful opportunity, given to us as a gift, to share in the same intimate relationship Jesus has with God his Father. Being a daughter or son of God gives us a unique and focused mission to which we must be faithful. Our identity, as with Jesus, is rooted in God. This is a simple fact we all must accept. Through Baptism, we are given the power and ability to see the world as God sees and to think and act as God would think and act. This is a tall order but one that will lead us to truth and ultimately to happiness.

3 HELPING HANDS MINISTRY NEEDS YOU! Would you provide a meal for a family in need? So often we find ourselves in need of a little help to get us through a rough time. It could be during recovery from surgery, an illness, or a death in the family. Our parish has provided countless meals to help those in need during difficult times. Helping Hands ministry needs help preparing and bringing meals to our parishioners in need. This is on a rotating basis and only if you are available. Please reach out to either Lori Gezella gezellal@gmail.com or Gerrie Ward icudraw@aol.com if you are available to help. Mandatory Ministry Meeting For ALL ushers, Eucharistic Ministers for Mass, and Eucharist Ministers that distribute to the nursing homes and homebound. Whether you are a seasoned minister or new to the ministry, you need to attend this mandatory meeting. Funeral Pre-Planning Because we are aware that you all have very busy schedules, we are offering several options for dates/times: January 9:15am January 6:30pm February 11:00 (following Mass) ~We will be meeting in the church~ Have you thought about what you would like for your funeral? What type of readings or songs you would like read or sung? Due to the importance of this ministry and the topics that will be covered during this meeting we ask that everyone attend. Unfortunately, we will not be able to include those who have not attended a meeting on future schedules. Please join us for a pre-planning meeting on Tuesday, January 15th at 9:00am in the church Narthex. Ruth Holloway and Karen Buchinger will be there to assist and guide you in putting your plans in place. Pre-planning doesn t only allow you to have the funeral you desire but also takes pressure off of your loved ones planning your funeral while they grieve the loss of you in their lives. Please call the parish office to ensure we have enough materials prepared for all attending THE PARISH DIRECTORIES HAVE ARRIVED! For any parishioner who had their pictures taken, distribution of the directories will be after mass the weekend of January 19th & 20th (Any free 8X10s that were not picked up will also be available.) If you would like your directory or picture before the weekend, you can stop by the parish office. If you have not had your picture taken or are a new member, we are hoping to do another session in a year or two. You would receive a directory at that time. Thank you in advance for your time and commitment to this ministry. Fr. Scott & Karen Buchinger

4 Principal s Reflection Andrew Mulloy Goal three of the Parish Mission Plan reads: We will carry out Catholic Social Teachings in the community. The planning team intentionally placed this goal after two goals dealing with developing and strengthening the parish community. The ideal Catholic parish reaches out and impacts the community of which it is a member. Offering Mass for and praying for the community is paramount, but it isn t enough. We are called to take what we have gained worshipping in our faith community and share it with the community at large. This year, St. John the Baptist School is jumping into goal three in order to teach our students about the importance of service and love through action. All of our students have memorized Matthew 23:11-- The greatest among you will be the servant. Our K-8 students will participate in a class service project. A variety of projects are planned including helping at the Feed My Starving Children Mobile Pack and singing to the residents at Cardinal Ridge Residential Care Center. As we grow in wisdom and in love of God and neighbor, we naturally feel called to make a difference in our community. Education and outreach are not just the mission of our Catholic school, but the mission of our Church. Catholic Schools Week Want to learn more about our school? Interested in enrolling in preschool through eighth grade at SJB? Check out these great opportunities for the community to join us. Visit us! An Open House will following the 8 and 10 a.m. Masses on 1/27. Spend a day! Current K-7 students at other schools are invited to shadow for a day on 1/29. Join us! Join us at our Grandparents Mass on 1/30 at 8:30 a.m. Learn with us! Visit our Science Fair on 1/31 from 9-10 a.m.

5 BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN Please return Baby Bottles Jan 19, 20, 26 & 27 DID YOU KNOW THE PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS-Part 1 (Bread and Wine) Bread was offered up on a regular basis in Israel s sacrificial rites. Bread was not just a side dish to a meal as it is today but was considered the most basic type of food. It was considered a necessity to sustain life. The bible refers to the bread as the staff of life. Wine was also a significant part of the ancient Israelite meals and was often consumed with the bread. Like the bread, it was also offered up as a sacrificial gift. There was a close connection between the sacrificial gifts and the individual giver, offering bread and wine symbolized the offering one one s self. This is true with our gifts in the mass now. The bread was plowed, sowed, kneaded and the grapes for the wine were harvested and tended to carefully all year long. We offer God the gifts of creation and the results of our labors or as you hear fruits of earth and work of human hands. What this symbolizes is our giving of our entire lives to God in this offering. BLANKETING BROWN COUNTY St. Johns will again be participating in the Blanketing Brown County Campaign! Please help those in need by donating new and gently used blankets for distribution to area shelters and agencies. Boxes will be available in the Narthex until January 31st.
