1 Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish April 29, 2018 Parish Office (920) Glendale Avenue Green Bay, WI School Office (920) MAY CROWNING The ways Mary is honored in May is as varied as the people who honor her. It s common for parishes to have a daily recitation of the Rosary during May, and many erect a special May altar with a statue or picture of Mary as a reminder of Mary s month. Additionally, it s a long-standing tradition to crown the statue of Mary during May a custom known as May Crowning. Often, the crown is made of beautiful blossoms representing Mary s beauty and virtue. It s also a reminder to the faithful to strive to imitate our Blessed Mother s virtue in our own lives. May Crowning, in some areas, is a huge celebration and is usually done outside of Mass, although Mass may be celebrated before or after the actual crowning. But May altars and crownings aren t just church things. We can and should be doing the same in our homes. When we echo the customs and traditions of the Church in our homes our domestic churches we participate more fully in the life of the Church. If you haven t already, we encourage you to erect a prayer corner in your home. No matter how fancy or simple it is. The main point is that it s a place designated for God, and more specifically, for spending time with him. Just as you need proper atmosphere to sleep, you also need proper atmosphere to pray. For May, give Mary a special spot in your prayer corner. It can be a statue or picture, but place there some representation of our Blessed Mother. Make it appealing and a real tribute to her beauty and virtue. Then, crown Mary. You can give her an actual or spiritual crown and you can make it a subtle gesture or ornate ceremony of your own device. The meaning is far more important than the action. You can do it in the beginning, at the end of May or anywhere in between. Just do it! Why? Not because it s a long-standing tradition in the Church, although it is. Not because there are any special graces connected to it, although there is. No, do it because Mary is Mother your mother, my mother, everyone s mother and because she cares for all of us day-in-and-day-out without fail, interceding for us in even the tiniest matters. For that, she deserves an entire month in her honor. HOLY HOUR hosted by Welcome. (CRHP 2.0) May 6:30pm Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration with exposition needs a great push. People ask me, What will convert America and save the world? My answer is prayer. What we need is for every parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in holy hour of prayer. ~ Mother Teresa ~ Come join us for prayer, reflection and beautiful music. Reconciliation will be offered during holy hour.

3 April 29, 2018 Be the change you want to see in the world Parish Mission Planning Update Proverbs 19:21 says, "Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the decision of the LORD that endures." The Parish Mission Planning team at St. John s is passionate about creating a strategic plan for our parish. The diocesan leadership has done an excellent job of creating a strong process to be used in every parish, year over year. Our parish has a committed planning team ready to create this strategy and to live it out through discipleship-within our parish and beyond into the communities that we are a part of. We start by setting our hearts and minds on God and his direction, knowing that a plan that begins there, will succeed. This last week the Planning team was provided data regarding our parish and our community. This will be a foundation point, creating a plan based on facts and data. Our team will be including updates in the bulletin over the next few months to keep you informed about the process. This plan isn t complete or actionable without your faith, trust and support. St. John s Mission Planning Team Catholic Relief Services presentation! Father John Susan Casleton Andrew Mulloy Tony Nowak Jean Payette Jeff Taylor Father Scott Katie Westhoven Kelly Williams Dave Withee David Yeghiaian So many of you took part in the Rice Bowls through Catholic Relief Services this past Lent. Don and Susan Jauquet will be presenting their trip with CRS to Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza with emphasis on the work of CRS with the poor and vulnerable in Gaza. Tony Pohlen from CRS is also planning to be present as well. DATE: Sunday, April 29 th TIME: 6:30pm Social will begin at 6:00pm PLACE: St. John the Baptist Commons This presentation is open to all and there is no charge. IT S THAT TIME OF YEAR! Each year the members of St. John the Baptist Parish elect a new trustee to serve on the parish corporate board. One year we elect a Trustee-Secretary for a two year term and the next year a Trustee-Treasurer for a two year term. The terms run just like our fiscal year from July 1 st of one year to June 30 th two years later. This year we will be holding an election for the position of Trustee-Treasurer on the weekend of May 19 th and 20 th.. When considering a parish member for the position of trustee we would want to elect someone who is actively involved in the parish, updated and informed about the concerns of the parish and its members. A person elected to the position serves as an advisor to the pastor and brings harmony, wisdom and counsel to the various aspects of parish life. To give you an idea of the responsibilities of the Trustee- Treasurer, consider the following list: Represents the parish as a member of the parish corporate board. Serves as a member of the finance council and attends meetings as scheduled. Assists the pastor, finance council and business administrator in developing and approving the parish budget. With the pastor and the trustee-secretary, reviews and signs checks on an as-needed basis. Assists the pastor, finance council and business administrator in the preparation of financial reports to the parish and diocese. Signs the annual financial report to the diocese It seems like a lot of work. But it is essential to the continued successful operations of the parish to utilize members with gifts in financial areas to carry on this important position. In just ten hours per month, this person is a great help to our parish. If you feel you would be available for this elected position and wish to nominate yourself, or would be willing to approach another member to consider nomination to this position, please do so as soon as possible. Candidate biographies, pictures and a short statement as to why you would like to be elected to this position are needed in the parish office by May 2 nd, If you have any questions please contact Fr. John or Deacon Manny for additional information. Please consider running for this worthwhile position. Interested in Helping Meet the Parish Spiritual Needs? On Pentecost Sunday, May 20th, we will be selecting new Pastoral Council Members to replace several current members whose terms have expired. One role of the council is to represent and develop the spiritual needs of the parish. The commitment is for a three-year term, which involves primarily attending monthly meetings or any special events sponsored by the council. Please consider serving on the Pastoral Council. If interested of if you would like more information, please contact Melinda Palzewic at (920)

4 April 29, 2018 DID YOU KNOW New Pentecost-"What a new Pentecost means is that we are asking for the Holy Spirit to manifest Himself more and more so that we become truly alive in our faith. We want to shine as a light in the midst of darkness, and truly to be salt for the world by the quality of our witness and the sacrifices we make for the sake of Jesus, for the Gospel and for the Church." Disciples on the Way-Bishop David Ricken Building Disciples of Christ: Catholic Charities Being a disciple means being constantly ready to bring the love of Jesus to others The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis. Jesus calls us to build people up, heal the broken, and bring love to everyone. Catholic Charities works with individuals, families and communities to help them meet their needs and resolve their problems. Catholic Charities is committed to bring social services to people of all faiths and ethnicities. Thousands of individuals and families are helped each year in five offices throughout our 16-county diocese. Many have little or no health insurance. They offer programs in: Individual and Family Counseling Adoption, Pregnancy and Parenting Support Family Strengthening Financial Health The counselors of Catholic Charities are disciples of Christ. Your gift to the Bishops Appeal allows Catholic Charities to bring the love of Christ to those who need it the most. All of us At St. John s are impacted by the work of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Green Bay. We are now at $105, of our goal of $115, That is almost 92% gifted by 493 households. We sincerely thank you for your gift. But there are many more of us who can still pray about the gift we might make to help not just our parish but those in communities all around us. Last year we reached our goal by the second week in June. Please consider making your gift so that we might reach our goal sooner. God bless you! Over the last 2 weekends, 89 children made their First Eucharist during a beautiful and prayerful celebration of the Mass. Special thanks To Fr. John, Fr. Scott, Deacon Nick and Deacon Manny who led us in prayer. To the parents, who led the way with their children s preparation. To the wonderful and joy-filled musicians and singers, under the direction of Mrs. Buchinger, who gifted us with such beautiful music. To Mrs. Sylla, Ms. Gostas, Mrs. Ronsman, Mr. and Mrs. Komorowski, Mrs. Wempe, Mrs. Mongin, Mrs. Stenson, and Mrs. Jacques, who helped prepare them. To our altar servers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers and greeters. To Mrs. Sherry VanHelvoirt with all of her help behind the scenes To the children who gifted us with their joy at receiving Jesus for the first time and who shared their song with their hearts May you remain close to Jesus throughout your lives. To the parish community for your prayers and support throughout the months of their preparation, and during the rescheduling because of the snowstorm. To the families of the children being baptized at 10:00 Mass, who shared their special day with us. I truly feel blessed to be a part of this program and this parish. God bless you all, Susan Casleton A Thank you from a Fellow Parishioner When I first heard there would be the rescheduled First Communion today and also Baptisms I thought, wow, that will be a lot going on at one Mass. The St. John's team did a great job of orchestrating all the details. I felt the Mass had a nice flow between the Baptisms and the First Communion. It was heartwarming to have the parents of the second graders, the second graders and the families with children to be Baptized renewing their Baptismal Vows together. I really felt a sense of community within the service during that time. Very touching. For the Communicants to have 2 Priests concelebrating the Mass with also 2 Deacons was very special. As always the music was so appropriate to the entire ceremony. You always say, "We do it together as a parish community". Today it clearly showed! Hats off to all involved! Sincerely, A Parish Member

5 April 29, 2018 EUCHARISTIC MIRACLES OF THE WORLD EXHIBIT VATICAN INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION MAY 3 THRU MAY 13 Beginning Thursday, May 3rd St. John s will host a display of recorded Eucharist Miracles of the World. The exhibit will be available for viewing before and after every Mass and service in the Narthex from May 3 May 13 This display will contain an extensive assortment of photographs and historical descriptions and presents some of the principle Eucharistic Miracle's that have taken place throughout the ages in various countries of the world and have been documented and recognized by the Church. Everyone is encouraged to spend some time viewing the 50 panel display and becoming aware of these awesome miracles. It is indeed true that the most important and astounding miracle is the one that takes place whenever the Eucharist is celebrated, during which Jesus Christ is truly present in a Sacramental way with His Body and Blood, His Soul and Divinity under the appearance of bread and wine. In the Eucharist, Jesus becomes our food and drink, uniting us with Him and with each other, on our earthly pilgrimage towards our eternal homeland. Everyone is invited and welcome to witness this magnificent exhibit which has been endorsed by Bishop Ricken. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Deacon Nick at COME AND SEE AND BRING A FRIEND! Next Year s Youth Formation You may have heard of some of the great enhancements next year for our Middle School and High School Youth Formation! We know the Holy Spirit is fueling these changes and we are hearing great positive reactions to our teens who are looking forward to the NEW process and program! Now, we need YOUR help! We are seeking Adults to join us in sharing their faith and desire to grow in Holiness as Small Group Leaders for next year s Middle School and High School Youth. We re looking for adults who are willing to be awesome and impactful in our youth s faith-filled lives! Adults who are: able to be fully present to our teen groups able to listen to their concerns, frustrations, fears, joys, and sorrows able to share their holy victories towards the Lord willing to help in small groups in the background to help in hospitality, follow up phone calls, and prayers. If you are an adult who wants to see our Catholic faith continue to grow and strengthen, this is a wonderful ministry to help with!! Please consider connecting with Kym Allex, our Coordinator of Youth Evangelization, for more information! Principal s Reflection Drew Mulloy New Members This Sunday the parish is hosting a brunch for our new members. This gives us an opportunity to consider what we can do to make them feel welcome and to encourage others to join our faith community, as well. St. John the Baptist Parish and School has deep roots in Howard/Duck Creek. You can see historical images of the old St. John s buildings in the balcony at Festival Food, at the Village Hall, and in other places in the community. Many of our parish/school families are the third and fourth generation members, and many new families are joining this vibrant and welcoming community. The growth we are experiencing is significant, especially compared to other parishes and schools. The Village of Howard has one of the fastest growth rates in the state of Wisconsin. It is a destination neighborhood for young families. Our parish and school are seeing a similar growth. In Sunday s Gospel reading, Jesus says, Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. Today, consider how each of us can help to connect the new members into our community in a deep and nourishing way. Each member of our community, new, existing, or distant, needs to be connected to Jesus Christ in order to bear fruit. Let us work together to continue to build this environment that does more than welcome, but draws others into the heart of our parish and school. Meet the Kindergarten Teachers Next weekend, the kindergarten teachers will be hosting coffee and rolls after the 8 and 10 Sunday Masses. Please stop by to meet Miss Nelson and Miss Hogan and hear the great things going on in their classrooms. Invite family and friends that might be interested in St. John the Baptist School to join you. Spring Concert and Art Show Join us in the commons on Wednesday, May 9 at 6 p.m. for our annual Spring Concert and Art Show. STEUBENVILLE REVEALED 2018 Next Weekend, May 5th and 6th, our SJB teen delegates of the upcoming Summer Mission Trip and Steubenville North Trips will be in the Narthex with a special opportunity for our parish to support their fundraising efforts! If you feel called to support them on their journey, please come and talk or pray with them after Masses! There will be an opportunity to financially support their trips and efforts as well! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND GOD BLESS!
