1 Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish February 18, 2018 Parish Office (920) School Office 2597 Glendale Avenue Green Bay, WI (920) Parish Reconciliation Wednesday Feb. 21st 7:00pm We will begin with a short prayer service in the Church followed by individual confessions. There will be many priests available. All are welcome! KERYGMA NIGHT Kerygma The apostolic proclamation of salvation through Jesus Christ. The core message of the Gospel is called the kerygma. The kerygma informs the central mission and identity of the Church and is the identity of every baptized Christian. God is Love and has created us for a personal relationship with Him. Spend an evening looking at your relationship with God, reflecting on where you are at and where you could be. Pick a night! Thursday Feb. 22nd, 6-7:15pm in the Church or th Monday March 19, 6-7:15pm in the Church There is no cost so bring your family or a friend! So I ask you: Are you looking for empty thrills in life, or do you want to feel a power that can give you a lasting sense of life and fulfillment? Empty thrills or the power of grace? To find fulfillment, to gain new strength, there is a way. It is not a thing or an object, but a person, and he is alive. His name is Jesus Christ. - POPE FRANCIS

3 February 18, 2018 Dear people of God, We are a large and active parish. But, beneath all the lifechanging activity that occurs, there is much more potential. Even more basically is the deep concern that we all have an ongoing personal relationship with Christ Jesus. It is his work, his grace, his love that saves and inspires us. It is his mandate that we use every word and action to spread the gospel. For this reason, our parish is among 15 parishes that are pilot parishes for the Parish Mission and Capital Campaign Planning. We will be assessing the various ministries, activities and the needs of our buildings for updating. Are we using every word and action to spread the good news? As we work at being one of the pilot parishes, so will all the other parishes of the diocese of Green Bay be doing. Truly this is a huge endeavor for us as well as the entire diocese. It will require our best efforts. After all, this is what we desire to do. This is our time! The following are the people who we have asked to The following are the people whom we have asked to serve on a planning team of our parish for the next six months. Please surround all of us with prayer as the evil one will often attempt to thwart any effort that seeks to spread the gospel! We are not afraid and so we move ahead Fr. John Bergstadt Jean Payette Andrew Mulloy Dave WIthee Katie Westhoven David Yeghiaian Kelly Williams Susan Castleton Tony Nowak Resources: Deacon Manny Torres & Jeff Taylor Thank you for the strong and consistent support that you bring to this Beloved Parish! We have received a very positive response to making the announcements before Mass begins. It enables people to enter worship when those important items are completed before mass begins. For this reason we ask that you try to come a little bit earlier as the announcements are made about five minutes before Mass begins. We are also aware that if you end up at the outer edge of either parking lot it is a considerable walk to get to the church and can take more time that you might have anticipated. We appreciate your coming to church here and we want to the experience to be as prayerful and fruitful as we can. Thanks for all the cooperation that you give! SHOULD I GIVE TO THE BISHOP S APPEAL? As I sit at my desk writing this article, I just got off the phone with a close friend who happens to belong to another parish in our diocese. He just got back from a two week vacation, since he is retired, and was opening his mail. He was reading through the letter asking for him to consider donating to the Bishop s Appeal. And the Bishop wanted to remind him why it was important for him to support the Bishop s Appeal. He started off by saying what a fun time he had fishing and too bad I didn t care for salt water fishing. And then he got around to how much he should give to the Bishop s Appeal. He said, Every year I get one of these in the mail and sometime I decide to give and sometime I don t. Yet they keep sending me a letter every year. What do you think I should do? Wow, what an opening. I could give him two barrels full of what I know about the Bishop s Appeal. Such as the following taken from a brochure: Your gift to the Bishop s Appeal helps Catholic Charities reach out to those in need by providing individual and family counseling. Catholic Charities teaches people financial responsibility, provides adoption and pregnancy counseling to birth parents and adoptive parents, guides individuals with unplanned pregnancies, and offers other counseling services. Your gift brings faith formation to people of all ages. Parishes and Catholic schools are able to provide strong religious curriculum, train educators and youth leaders. The Bishop s Appeal supports Camp Tekakwitha summer camp for our youth. Within parishes, your gift assists in training and supporting pastoral ministers, parish staff, deacons and lay ministers. It supports outreach ministries, adult faith formation, and we also support campus ministries for young adults. These are just a few ways your gift to the Bishop s Appeal makes a difference. But I didn t do that. I said, You need to decide for yourself how much the good that the Bishop s Appeal does impacts your own life. It s not just about asking you for a donation but about making a commitment to help those less fortunate than yourself. About how making ministry happen goes a long way to making our world a better place. Only you can decide what is important. And with that, he said he would be sending his gift. But he still gave me a hard time about not going fishing with him. This year s Bishop s Appeal has only been ongoing for just over one week. Already our parish has reached 24% of our goal. If we could continue at this pace we would be done before Easter. I want to thank the 88 households that have already given this year. And I ask the rest of us to pray and decide how we can help to make ministry happen in our parish and the Diocese. May God bless us all.

JOHN'S PARISH WOMEN You are welcome to join the Catholic Women/Christian Mothers for our business meeting. Thursday, Feb. 22nd in the school commons DID YOU KNOW... Kerygma: (from the Greek: keryssein meaning to proclaim and keryx means herald ). Kerygma refers to the initial and essential preaching, announcement or proclamation of the Gospel message. Kerygma is the heart of the Gospel, the core message of the Christian faith which all believers are called to proclaim. (Disciples on the Way Overview - Bishop Ricken- Green Bay Diocese Website) The most basic form of the kerygma contains five elements. Creation - God is love and has created me for relationship with Him. Fall- I have broken my relationship with God by my sin. Redemption - Jesus restores my relationship with God through his life, death, resurrection. Salvation - Jesus invites me to trust Him, to turn from sin and to give my life to Him. Re-Creation - Jesus has poured the Holy Spirit into my heart to bring me to new life in His Church and send His Church on mission so that others can experience that new life. (Encounter & Conversion Disciples On The Way - Green Bay Diocese Website) The word, kerygma, appears in the Gospel of Matthew 12:41, Luke 11:32 and in the Letters of St. Paul (Rom 16:25, 1 Cor 1:21, 2:4, 15:14, 2 Tim 4:17 and Titus 1:3). Social: 6:00pm Meeting: 6:30pm On our agenda will be our annual Spring Get Away being held on Wednesday, May 2nd, along with May Crowning/Living Rosary details. Come join us, and bring a friend to share the good news of what our organization is accomplishing for our parish. THANK YOU FROM THE KofC! Facebook: St. John the Baptist Youth ministry Twitter: stjohn_youth Instagram: st.johnthebaptistyouthministry One of the beautiful parts of the Catholic school experience is that staff and students are able to fully engage in the church s liturgical seasons. In Lent, our daily routines change and our faith s rich biblical experiences become an even more integral part of school culture. This year, students and staff will enter into the season through the three pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Students and classrooms will commit to becoming better versions of themselves. The entire school will increase its prayer life by adding the Stations of the Cross, a school-wide holy hour, and the Sacrament of Penance to the schedule. We will create a large physical prayer chain using slips of paper that classroom write intentions on. This year, we developed a fasting calendar. Our teachers identified things the school community will abstain from each day. For example, one day we might abstain from talking out of turn or from our favorite snack. Lastly, we will join the parish in the CRS Rice Bowl collection and will host a collection for the Freedom House, a family advancement center in Brown County. Please pray that our St. John the Baptist School community grows closer to Christ this Lent. For over a decade, The Northeast Wisconsin Passion Play, has presented a powerful musical drama depicting the ministry and passion of Christ through an original script, contemporary Christian score and dance.
