1 Welcome to St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish Parish Office 2597 Glendale Avenue School Office (920) Green Bay, WI (920) ADVENT IDEAS Is advent getting away on you? These weeks can get so filled with obligations, baking, shopping, etc., and before you know it...it s Christmas! It s not too late to celebrate the reason for the season! Here are a few ideas that you can do with your family to bring the focus back towhere it belongs or to continue keeping the focus where it should be. Make a prayer garland Cut out strips of paper and write the name of someone you want to pray for on each strip and make it into a chain. Hang it somewhere in the house. Make a birthday card for Jesus and put it by your advent wreath, nativity scene, or tree. Make cookies and bring them to a neighbor. Clean out your toy box and give some of your toys to St. Vincent DePaul. Make a Christmas card for someone you love and tell them why you love them. Watch the Nativity story and talk about what happened. Buy some dog/cat treats and bring them to an animal shelter. Have pancakes and hot chocolate for dinner and share what Christmas means to you.

We have stocking stuffers and gifts for everyone! Check out our Catholic Lighthouse Kiosk in the Narthex. Books and CDs for every member of the family! Which Christmas Mass should I attend? Every family has their various factors to consider when deciding which Christmas celebration to attend. We thought we would try to help you with this decision. CHRISTMAS EVE 4:00pm Mass Music: Living Waters This mass is very full and usually has seating into the Narthex. Many families will attend this mass as a kick off to their traditional celebrations. If you attend this mass you may want to come about 45 minutes early to get a seat. 6:30pm Mass Music: The Peot Family This mass is not as full as the 4:00 mass but the pews will be full. We find that this is a very reverent mass and is enjoyed by many. 11:00pm Mass Music: Katie, Christopher, Olivia, and Alexis This mass is probably the least attended of all the masses but still has good attendance. This mass tends to be very calm and peaceful. It ends at Midnight and leads us into Christmas morning. CHRISTMAS DAY 9:00am Mass Music: Karen and Open to All This one is comfortably full. The excitement and joyfulness of Christmas morning is felt throughout this mass. The choir is made up of all ages including families. No matter the mass you attend, please participate in both prayer and song and help us celebrate the birth of our SAVIOR!
4 GRACE Annual Appeal As part of a grant that St. John s has received to promote Catholic pro-life issues, there will be an outdoor flag display in front of the church doors the weekend of January 5th/6th. This display honors the lives of babies that are aborted every hour in our country. While we sit for an hour in Mass, 120 babies will lose their lives. Recognizing the visual impact that it may have on our children and ourselves, our parish is hosting a night with a nationally known pro-life speaker, Brian Gibson, for our parishioners to grow in insight, education, and advocacy for this important issue. There will be a question and answer session, following the presentation. This will be held Wednesday January 9th at 7pm in the church proper. Open to all, suggested high school and older. Starting next weekend and several weekends to follow, you will find helpful conversation starters for our children at different ages to help aid you with the sharing on this sensitive topic. Consider the gift of education in your year-end charitable giving. Your gift to the GRACE Annual Appeal will offer the blessing for any families who desire a Catholic education for their children. Many of us in our parish communities have been blessed with the gifts of Catholic education, and can carry on what we have learned and witnessed in our faith in giving back to our GRACE Catholic schools. Donations can be mailed to GRACE Annual Appeal, 1087 Kellogg Street, Green Bay, WI or online at Thank you for your prayerful consideration for GRACE in your year-end charitable giving. Calling ALL college students (18-25)! Are you home on break and looking for something to do?! Join Fr. Scott and our Coordinator for Young Adult Evangelization, Katie Westhoven, for Mass followed by a SOCIAL nd at Townline Pub & Grill on Wednesday January 2! Appetizers will be provided! Join us for a meal, followed by a short talk, and time to discuss. Is Alpha for you? Yes, Alpha is for everyone! 5 2018 RETIREMENT COLLECTION Principal s Reflection Thank you to all who gave generously last weekend through the Retirement Collection. If you still wish to donate you may use the envelopes in church or Parish Office to share in the care of our retired sisters, brothers and religious order priests, as well as our own diocesan priests. On behalf of them, thank you for your generous care! Andrew Mulloy BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN As part of our call to be chivalrous Catholic Gentlemen who, where needed, are to provide for the welfare of women and children in our community, the Knights of Columbus Council 6279 here at St. John s proudly announces its next Baby Bottle Campaign! One of the darkest anniversaries on the calendar each year is January 22. On this day in 1973, a Supreme Court decision (Roe v. Wade) legalized abortion in the United States. As a way of associating this day with a brighter meaning, please support those who choose life by filling a Baby Bottle with your loose change (or even better the kind of money that folds)! All funds collected will be donated to local organizations helping struggling mothers here in our area meet the basic needs of their newborns. Baby Bottle pick-up: After all Masses Jan 12 & 13 Baby Bottle returns: After all Masses Jan 19, 20, 26 & 27 DID YOU KNOW The word homily means explanation in Greek. It is meant to explain the meaning of the scripture and apply it to people s lives. An ordained minister is the only one who can deliver the homily. It is noted that the reason behind this is that an ordained minister is meant to be a sign or guarantee that the preaching is passing on the Church s apostolic family and not merely the private thoughts and experiences of an individual. The entire way to grandma's house it seems like my daughter, Gianna, yells from the back seat, How much longer? It is always disheartening when I need to respond with, We just left. Towards the end of the ride, everyone gets a little bit excited when I'm able to reply, We're almost there. This weekend we celebrate Gaudete Sunday. It is symbolized with the color rose in the Advent wreath and on the priest's vestments. It is the We're almost there of Advent. Advent is a time when the days grow longer and our anticipation of the Son s arrival becomes more intense. Gaudete Sunday is the Church s reminder for us to be filled with joy because Christ will soon be here and He is the cause of our joy. We're almost there.
6 SHELTER MEAL On Monday, November 12, St. John the Baptist Parish served a hot chili dinner (plus seconds) to 150 people at the New Community Shelter on Mather Str eet in downtown Green Bay. Thanks to all involved for their generosity! If you are interested in helping cook, bake, or serve, please call and let us know. We would be happy to add you to our list of volunteers!
