MARRIAGE Couples planning to marry must contact one of the parish priests at least six months before the marriage to set a date and begin preparations for this sacrament. SICK AND HOMEBOUND Please notify the parish office if someone is unable to attend Mass and wishes to receive Communion or the Sacrament of the Sick. Also please notify the office if any parishioner is admitted to a hospital. 2 JULY 22, 2018 PASTOR S COMMENTS. Last Sunday we heard Jesus send out the disciples two by two to proclaim repentance and to extend his kingdom. This Sunday we hear of the disciples returning from their missionary adventure and we sense all their excitement as they reported all they had done and taught. It is interesting to see Jesus response. He does not say good job or get back out there and pick up the pace. What Jesus says is: Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. This invitation seems to have several levels. First of all Jesus is affirming the need for stepping back from the fast pace demands of this ministry to pause and rest. He also seems to be implying that no matter how fast paced or slow paced life might be, it is important to pause and reflect on the meaning of what we are doing and for whom we are doing it. For ourselves during this summertime, a Gospel passage such as this gives us encouragement to take time away from the work and life as usual, to get away and allow a different pace and different surroundings to refresh us. Isn t that what vacation is meant to do? Besides this refreshment, the Lord s invitation to get away is also an invitation to refocus on the love of our God at the center of our heart and allow that love and presence to restore meaning and purpose to all that we are doing. Even as Jesus and the disciples disembark, hoping for a deserted place, they find a vast crowd and the scriptures say: Jesus heart was moved with pity for them The love flows out from the heart of Jesus to respond to the crowds, even though it seems to be an inopportune time. He is inviting the disciples of his time and all of us as his disciples to refocus on our purpose for service and to let that love be extended from our hearts. This time of being On Mission challenges us all the more to not just get caught up in change, or even worse in the fear of change but to take time to breath in and breath out and allow the Lord to calm our hearts. We are invited to keep a perspective on what we are being call to become as the Body of Christ, the Church for our diverse neighborhoods. Jesus is saying to us: Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. We all need time to rest, relax and be refreshed. However, even as we hopefully are able to take some time away from the daily routine, we are challenged to renew our commitment to love our God and those that the Lord places before us during our time away. WELCOME, CAPUCHIN POSTULANTS This weekend at the 10:00 a.m. Mass we welcome the following men who have just been received into our Capuchin postulantcy program in Philadelphia: Michael Sharp, Mehari Worku, Stephen Cantwell, Matthew Lontz, Tony Rivera, Alex Santana, Sebastian Rojas, Drew Morken, and Simon Falk. We are happy that they have joined us for this Liturgy and our prayers are with them as they begin this year of taking a closer look at Capuchin life. Rafael, will be preaching and seeking support to help finance a group of vocation candidates to go to the World Youth Day in Panama. These are young men who are actively discerning a vocation to Capuchin life. Any support that you could offer would be greatly appreciated. CALLING ALL YOUNG ADULTS We would like to reenergize the OLOA Young Adults. There are many Young Adults that come to Mass each weekend so we are seeking some of you to step forward and become new leadership for the group. If you are interested and willing to lead Young Adult activities and be a catalyst for joining together with young adults from St. Maria Goretti and Immaculate Heart of Mary Parishes, you are asked to please contact Bro. 3 16th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SUNDAY, AUGUST 5 th will be our annual Parish Picnic at McKnight Village Park. Once again the Picnic will feature a pig roast and the parish will provide the beer, pop, water and paper products and each family is asked to bring a dish to share. You are encouraged to sign up for the Picnic listing your name, how many adults and children will be coming and what dish you will be bringing. We want to make sure that everyone who would like to can attend the picnic so we are asking that you also list if you need or can provide transportation. This year we are also inviting the parishioners of our new Grouping Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Maria Goretti to join us so that we can bring folks together to begin to get to know each other. PICNIC VOLUNTEERS NEEDED To make our Picnic a success we are in need of volunteers to help at the Picnic. Volunteers are needed to help with setup, games, parking, cleanup, etc. If you are planning to come to the Picnic and would be willing to help for a short time we invite you to sign up and many hands will make the work load lighter. We hope to make this one of the best picnics ever, so plan to be a part. ENROLLMENT TIME FOR RELIGIOUS ED If you have not already done so, it is time to enroll your children in the Pre-Kindergarten (age 4) to Grade 8 Family Centered Religious Education Program, which begins on Catechetical Sunday, September 16, We need to encourage early registration so that we have sufficient time to order the materials that will be used in the Family Centered Program. Registration forms and return envelopes are located in church on the table in front of St. Anthony Chapel. All children of the Parish that are not attending Catholic School should be registered in our Program. For more information you may call Paula A. RCIA FAITH STUDY Are you or someone you know interested in joining the Catholic Church? REFLECTION ON IMMIGRATION Pope Francis, during his visit to the United States spoke as a brother to us: We, the people of this continent, are not fearful of foreigners, because most of us were once foreigners. I say this to you as the son of immigrants, knowing that so many of you are also descended from immigrants. St. Jon Paul II taught that ministering to the needs of the refugee or migrant does not depend on legal status: An irregular legal status cannot allow the migrant to lose his dignity, since he is endowed with inalienable rights that can neither be violated nor ignored. The U.S. Bishops affirm the right of nations to secure their borders while at the same time calling for immigration reform and opposing actions that break up families, dividing children from their parents and husbands from their wives. NEED HOME REPAIRS? The St. John and Paul Senior Connection outreach are available again this year to assist Lawrenceville seniors, who own their homes, with the home maintenance and repair. 4 GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES The Diocese of Pittsburgh is once again planning its Golden Wedding Celebration for couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year. A special Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Zubik on Sunday, October 7th, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul Cathedral. A light reception will follow in the Cathedral hall. All couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary any time this year and wishing to receive an invitation to this event should call the parish office or drop a note in the collection basket no later than Sunday, August 5. PRAYER REQUEST BOX The Prayer Request box is available on the table in the back of church to receive requests you would like to lay before the altar each week. The women of the Rosary Society, as one of their ministries, have been taking those prayer requests on the first Sunday of each month and dividing them up among their members and personally pray for those listed on the intention sheets. CAPUCHIN GOLF OUTING All you golfer are invited to save the date for the Capuchin Classic Golf Outing on Friday, August 3, 2018 at River Forest Country Club in Freeport, PA. The annual event includes breakfast, lunch, contests, prizes and raffles. Individual golfers and foursomes are welcome. This event benefits the Father Bill Wiethorn Scholarship Fund to support Capuchin seminarians. The Lord Is My Shepherd, There Is Nothing I Shall Want One of the most tender images we have of Jesus is that of the Good Shepherd. Just as a shepherd guides the flock, so Jesus leads us, his flock, keeping us safe, encouraging us, placing us on his shoulders when we have strayed as he draws us back into the fold. The Lord s work as shepherd of our hearts is not limited to a time of trial or need in our lives. Jesus is always, actively leading us and it is the responsibility of each of us as Christians to listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd and follow him on the path of life. Not only does Jesus lead us individually as his sisters and brothers, but also wholly as the Church. The shepherd keeps the flock moving together as one and goes in search of the lost in order that they may be one with the Church again. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! we trust in the guidance of Christ the Good Shepherd to lead us and the Church through this time of change. The Lord does not abandon his flock and will strengthen us as we draw closer to him in faith and to each other as the Church.
