DIOCESE VICTIM ASSISTANCE HOTLINE: BAPTISM Ordinarily celebrated during one of the weekend Masses. A preparation class is required for parents and godparents. Contact the parish office to make arrangements. MARRIAGE Couples planning to marry must contact one of the parish priests at least six months before the marriage to set a date and begin preparations for this sacrament. SICK AND HOMEBOUND Please notify the parish office if someone is unable to attend Mass and wishes to receive Communion or the Sacrament of the Sick. Also please notify the office if any parishioner is admitted to a hospital. 2 JUNE 12, 2016 PASTOR S COMMENTS. If you ever doubted the merciful and forgiving nature of our God you need to read the scripture readings for this Sunday. We read of David, in the First Book of Kings, being castigated for his terrible sin of taking the wife of his military commander and then sending that commander, Uriah, out to the battle to be killed. Even as his grave sins are brought before his consciousness, he hears the promise through the prophet, Elijah, that: The Lord on his part has forgiven your sin: you shall not die. In the Gospel passage from St. Luke we hear the familiar story of the sinful woman who washes Jesus feet with her tears and dries them with her hair. Jesus uses this act of love to point out that those who appear to be the good and righteous ones, the Pharisees, are the ones who are standing in judgment of this woman but fail to have real love in their hearts. Jesus is teaching them and us that it is only when we realize that each and every one of us is a sinner that we can see that we are called to be people of action out of love instead of judges who become self-righteous. It is God who extends mercy and forgiveness to each of us and we are called not to be judges of others, but rather to be instruments of that same mercy and forgiveness through our love for those around us. This past week we had a new friar join our fraternity. Bro. Al Carver, who is a deacon, will be living in our Friary and both working with Fr. Rich at St. Benedict the Moor Parish and also studying Philosophy at Duquesne University in preparation for going to Papua New Guinea in the future. Welcome Bro. Al! CAPUCHIN FRIARS PREACHING BAND Some of the young Capuchin Friars from Washington, DC will be coming to our parish for a couple of special evenings. There will be an Evening of Adoration, Prayer & Praise on Monday June 27 th at 7:15 p.m. in Church. This evening will include Eucharistic Adoration, music and preaching from the Brothers. The second evening will be a Franciscan Spirituality Night with Q & A on Wednesday June 29 th at 7:15 p.m. in the Lower Church Hall. This evening will offer the opportunity to learn more about Capuchin Franciscan Spirituality and have any questions you might have answered by the Friars. A social will follow each evening. 3 11th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MARK YOUR CALENDAR Our annual Parish Picnic will take place on Sunday August 7 th at McKnight Village Park. This is the same Park we have used the past couple of summers. Be sure to mark the date and plan to come to experience and celebrate our spirit of community at this fun event. RELIGIOUS ED REGISTRATION This month we want to register all the children that will be participating in our Family Centered Religious Ed Program beginning in September. If you have children from Pre School age (4 years) to 8th grade, who are not enrolled in a Catholic School, we ask that you register them in our Family Centered Religious Ed Program. Registration forms are available in church, online or at the Parish Office. If you have any questions about the program please call the Parish Office. PRE SCHOOLERS WELCOME In September, when we begin our Family Centered Religious Ed Program, we plan to include Pre Schoolers (4 years old). If you have any pre School age children, please take time to register them for the Program so that we can prepare for this new class. NEED FOR RELIGIOUS ED TEACHERS We are in need of parishioners who would be willing to be a Teacher or a Teacher s Aide in our Religious Ed Program. The commitment is to lead or to assist in teaching one Sunday a month in the Family Centered Program. Training and materials will be offered. Please consider volunteering. If you would like to learn more about what the Program involves you can contact Paula Calabrese at or call the Parish Office. SENIOR HOME OWNER NEEDING REPAIRS? Parishioners from Saints John & Paul Parish will be in our parish area on Saturday June 18 th to assist any seniors living in our area who own their home and are in need of some repairs. If you fit that criteria, you are invited to call Toni Jester at to schedule a visit. FATHER S DAY BLESSING Next Sunday is Father s Day so plan to bring your father to one of the Masses next weekend to receive a special blessing that will be prayed for all our Fathers. COMMUNION TO THE HOMEBOUND If you know of any parishioner who is homebound please call their name into the Parish Office so that we can arrange for them to receive the sacraments on a regular basis. A number of our Ministers of Communion go to the homes and are happy to bring the Eucharist to the homebound. COMMUNION FOR CELIAC SUFFERERS If you have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease we want you to know that we do have gluten free hosts available. Please come to the Vestry on the right side of the church before Mass and let Bro. John know of your need and we will make sure to consecrate a gluten free host for you. We do ask that you sit up toward the front of church so that we can bring communion to you in the pew. SUMMER SPORTS AND ENRICHMENT CAMPS FOR GIRLS Oakland Catholic High School is offering Summer Sports and Enrichment Camps for girls who are in grades 3 8. These camps include: Basketball, Volleyball, Morning Masterpiece, LEGO Mind Storm, Write Your Mind, and Girls Night Out. Visit oaklandcatholic.org for details and registration to these camps. For questions contact the Admissions Office at x253 or x267. DON T LET YOUR CHILD BECOME A STATISTIC! 80% of kids stop practicing the faith at some point during college. There is a way to keep our kids (grandkids) connected to the faith. Go to and fill out the quick online form. We only need their first and last name and the school they will be attending. A Catholic campus minister at their college will be able to reach out to them and invite them to participate in campus ministry. It takes less than 2 minutes to do and it might be the most important thing you do for your loved one as they graduate high school!!

CATHOLIC YOUTH DAY AT KENNYWOOD Tuesday, July 8, Tickets are only $20 for this awesome day of faith in the park. The day starts at 10:45 a.m. with music led by Bob Lesnefsky, a talk by Dave VanVickle and Mass at 11:15 all at pavilion #5. PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY DOOR During this Year of Mercy there is a special indulgence offered to those who make a Pilgrimage through the Holy Door at Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland. The Cathedral is open from 5:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. each day. The requirement for the indulgence is to say a prayer for Pope Francis and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Eucharist in the course of the week. PRAYER REQUEST BOX You are reminded that the Prayer Request box is available on the table in the back of church to receive any requests you would like to lay before the altar each week. The women of the Rosary Society, as one of their ministries, have been taking those prayer requests on the first Sunday of each month and dividing them up among their members and personally pray for those listed on the intention sheets. ST. AUGUSTINE CEMETERY We remind you that we are blessed to have our own Parish Cemetery and you are encouraged to plan ahead and consider purchasing graves or crypts for you and your loved ones in our Cemetery. CLOTHING DONATIONS If you have clothing you are no longer using you can put them to good use by donating them to someone in need through the St. Vincent de Paul receptacle located at the bottom of our parking lot.
