2 SEPTEMBER 23, 2018 PASTOR S COMMENTS. The fans of every sports team love to chant, We re number ONE! Every politician loves to let us know that they are the greatest gift to humanity and deserve our vote. Our society puts forward the standards of wealth, power, position, influence, and where you live as signs of greatness and as the golden ring to be grasped and cherished. These standards are so universal and pervasive in our culture and in all societies that almost everyone, at some point in their lives, use them as an examination as to how they are stacking up against others. We see it in today s Gospel passage from St. Mark that even the Apostles were not exempt from this temptation. As they walked along with Jesus they were quietly discussing who was the greatest. Was it Peter, who was called rock by Jesus? Was it Judas who was given charge of the money? Was it Philip or Andrew who on several occasions seemed to be able to get Jesus ear? Was it John who sat beside Jesus at table? There were a lot of the traditional standards that must have been part of their conversation. Only Jesus can definitively answer the question, who was the greatest. Of course we see that when Jesus weighs in on the question he answers them by saying: If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. Jesus tells the Apostles and all of us that all the societal standards of greatness are out the window when it comes to judging position and worth in relationship to his Kingdom. The way Jesus answers the Apostles even eliminates that potential standard of desiring to be servant number ONE since he says: If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all. We are invited to take time to reflect on our call to service. The Lord is inviting us to not only examine what acts of service we have performed today, but also to examine our mindset as to whether we are seeking to be the servant of all in everything we do? We look to Jesus as the ultimate servant in laying down his life for all of us and we hear him say: Come follow me! If you have or hear any questions concerning the new Interim Mass Schedule for our Grouping, please let me know so that we can address those concerns. 3 25th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OKTOBERFEST - October 6 th Our Oktoberfest Fundraiser will take place on Saturday October 6 th at the Teamster Hall at 4701 Butler Street. This will be a fun night with German music and song by Kevin Solecki and an outstanding menu of warm Pretzels with beer cheese, Brats, Hotdogs, Pulled Chicken, Sauerkraut, Spätzle, German Potato Salad, Cucumber Salad, Mixed Greens, and of course Apple Strudel. There will also be a number of Oktoberfest Beers and German Wine on sale for $3.00. Tickets are only $20.00 and are on sale this weekend. At this event there will also be some great Baskets being raffled off as well as 50/50 and the drawing of our big Money Raffle. Please take some tickets out to sell and spread the word to fellow workers, family and friends. OKTOBERFEST MONEY RAFFLE In conjunction with our Oktoberfest Fundraiser we are having a Money Raffle. The prizes for the Raffle are $1500, $500 and $250. Your help is needed to make this Raffle a success. Tickets are: 1 for $2.00, 3 for $5.00 and 12 for $20.00 and the winners need not be present to win. The stubs and the money for the chances can be placed in an envelope and returned through the collection basket or they can be mailed to the parish office. There are extra books of chances available in the back of church or at the parish office, so please take more if you can sell them. Thanks for your help with this important fundraiser. BASKETS RAFFLE The 22 Outstanding Baskets of prizes are on display in the back of church. A sheet of 26 tickets costs $10.00 and you can place them in the bags in front of the baskets that you hope to win. The drawings will take place at the October 6 th Oktoberfest Fundraiser. You need not be present to win. RCIA FAITH STUDY The RCIA Faith Study has begun and will take place each Monday at 7:15 p.m. in the Parish House. You are invited to come and learn more about your faith and have the opportunity to prepare to be received into the Church or,if you have not already done so, to receive the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. FAMILY CENTERED RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Next (September 30 th ) after the 10:00 a.m. Mass the first session of our Family Centered Religious Education Program will take place. If you still need to register your children for the Program or have any questions, please call or the Grouping Director of Religious Education, Paula Calabrese, at or drpaulacalabrese@gmail.com. YOUNG ADULT BRUNCH All Young Adults and their children are invited to a Potluck Brunch in the Lower Room this September 23 rd after the 10:00 a.m. Mass. This will be a great opportunity to meet some of the other Young Adults in the Parish and share some food. ST. PADRE PIO MASS SEPTEMBER 24 th The Capuchins will be celebrating a Mass in honor of St. Padre Pio this Monday September 24 th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Church. Bro. Mick Joyce, OFM Cap will be the presider and preacher. Before the Mass from 5:30 p.m. 6:50 p.m. there will be a number of priest friars available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. After this Mass there will be the opportunity to venerate the relics of St. Padre Pio, which include one of the gloves that covered one of the sacred wounds. All are welcome! ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI TRANSITUS SERVICE On Wednesday, October 3rd after the 6:30 p.m. Mass there will be the traditional Service commemorating the passing of St. Francis of Assisi. This Service uses readings from the life of St. Francis to celebrate his entrance into eternal life. After the Service there will be a social. All are welcome to this Service. ST. FRANCIS FEAST DAY MASS On Thursday October 4 th, the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, there will be a Mass at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish House Chapel. All are welcome. BLESSING OF ANIMALS OCTOBER 7th On, October 7th in celebration of the Feast Day of St. Francis the Blessing of Animals will be offered to all pets large and small. This will take place on the sidewalk in front of the church at 1:00 p.m.

4 Please join the Rosary Society members on October 7th at 9:30 a.m. to recite the rosary. The Rosary Society meeting will follow in the lower church hall. New members are welcome. During the month of October the rosary will be Recited on s at 9:30 a.m. on October 7 & 14 and at 9:00 a.m. on October 21& 28. COMMUNION TO THE HOMEBOUND If you know of any parishioner who is homebound please call their name into the Parish Office so that we can arrange for them to receive the sacraments on a regular basis. A number of our Ministers of Communion go to the homes and are happy to bring the Eucharist to the homebound. SICK OR HOSPITALIZED If you know of any parishioners who are ill or hospitalized please let Bro. John know so that either he or one of the Ministers of Communion can visit them. Too often we do not hear about someone being hospitalized until after they are discharged POPE FRANCIS SPEAKS TO THE CAPUCHINS Toward the end of the General Chapter of the Capuchins in Rome this past Friday the friars at the Chapter, including our Provincial, Bro. Tom Betz, had an audience with the Pope Francis who spoke to the friars. The Pope began by saying that Capuchins are always of the people with ordinary people and that they are loved because they are the friars of the people. He urged us, with some insistence, to never lose our closeness to the people. The Holy Father pressed us to be men of reconciliation first in society, families and in the Church. But he noted our special reputation for offering the sacrament of reconciliation. He said that in Buenos Aires the people want to go the Capuchins for confession because the Capuchins listen and don t ask a lot of questions. He mentioned how he was moved during his recent visit to Ireland by his time with the Capuchins in Dublin who humbly feed the poor. He said that the Capuchins in Dublin are like the Capuchins in Argentina they listen. Again, he said, they don t ask the people who come for help a lot of questions; they just listen, they don t judge. They help. He then urged us to keep our simplicity, especially our simplicity in prayer. He ended by telling us to always be simple men who are close to the people and who lead them to pray in a simple way. Be the Last of All and the Servant of All Jesus offers this command connected with the announcement of his passion and death to his disciples. They didn t understand what Jesus meant when he said that he would suffer and die, and instead argued about who was the greatest among them. Yet, the Lord continues to work to prepare their hearts so that they might be ready for the suffering of the cross, and ultimately the glory of the resurrection. By putting others first and being the servant of all we are called to sacrifice, to be compassionate, literally to suffer with, and to open ourselves to others who will seek to do the same for us. All of this is rooted in the call to love others as if THEY are Christ and to love others as if WE are Christ. The On Mission for The Church Alive! Initiative as a whole, and the implementation of the Interim Mass Schedule on October 15 th, in particular, are opportunities for us to welcome and serve others with whom we are united in faith, hope and love. It may take sacrifice and a change of routine, but it can also bring about an increase of the love of Christ at work in us. We will collect clothing, household items, bedding, lamps and kitchenware. BLOOMFIELD AARP #3956 Bloomfield AARP #3956 will hold its monthly meeting on September 27th at 7:00 p.m. in the St. Maria Goretti Friendship Social Hall.
