4 Page 4 December 16 Third Sunday of Advent Spiritual Reflection Rejoicing Forbearing and Lowering Anxiety! Tuesday afternoon, I heard a talk by Vance McDonald, a player for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He shared with those present his journey from a small high school in Texas to being a physically strong player for the Steelers. For you who are not football fans and may not care about sports, take my word for it, he is a physically strong player. Some of those in attendance were young high school players. His story was one of having trust and confidence while suffering serious injuries to his shoulders not just one of them during his high school years to becoming physically strong player in the National Football League where strengthen is so important. Being a strong human being does not mean just being physically strong but there are other types of strengths that are needed in a human s journey of life. Emotional strength and intellectual strength are important elements for one s journey through life, too. This Sunday of Advent calls for us to rejoice. Where does the strength come to rejoice in spite of the struggles of everyday living? Spiritual strength is essential. Look at what St. Paul writes: "Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I say, rejoice. Let your forbearance (restraint under provocation) be known to all, for the Lord is near at hand (really!?); have no anxiety (hmmm! fears? ) about anything, but in all things, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God. Lord, you have blessed your land; you have turned away the captivity of Jacob." As St. Paul sat in prison, he made every effort to stay focused on God as he had learned from his dear friends the Philippians. We probably cannot ever imagine conditions of the prison in which Paul was held, but the strength of others kept him strong spiritually. How is your faith touching others in conditions like Paul? Fr. Rich Grouping News BLESSING OF JESUS STATUE As we approach Christmas and the placing of the Christ child figurine in the crib scene, you are invited to bring that figurine to the Mass next weekend to be blessed. This blessing will take place at all the Masses next weekend. DECORATING CHURCHES FOR CHRISTMAS This year, since December 24 is a Monday and is also Christmas Eve, there will be just a short turn-around time for decorating our Churches. This means that next Sunday, the 4th Sunday of Advent, after the last Mass at each of our churches, there is a need for volunteers to help to decorate the churches for Christmas. Plan to stay after the last Mass next Sunday to help put up the trees, hang the garland, etc., and to transform the churches from Advent to Christmas. TRI-PARISH ADVISORY COUNCIL After the first of the year the Clergy Team will be conducting interviews of all those who have submitted their names for consideration for membership on the new Advisory Council being formed to represent our three Parishes. The purpose of this new Council will be focused on one goal: To build relationships and foster unity among all of the parishes in our grouping as we move toward becoming one new parish in two to three years. There will be four parishioners from each of our three parishes that will be chosen; and we will be seeking representation on the Council based on diversity as well as creativity in helping to bring about the one goal of the Council, which is fostering unity. If you would like to be considered for membership on this Advisory Council, you are invited to submit your name to Bro. John by ing him at jharvey@capuchin.com or you can call him at CHRISTMAS CHILDREN/YOUTH CHOIR On Christmas Eve we will be having the Children/Youth Choir singing for the 4:00 p.m. Mass at Our Lady of the Angels Parish. Children/Youth in grades K-12 from all three parishes are invited to participate. The rehearsal for the Mass will be at 3:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve. If you are interested in being a part of the Children/Youth Choir, please use the sign-up sheets in the church. All children are welcome!

Since we have the six Masses for the three parishes of our Grouping and we are not sure which Mass our ministers are planning to attend, we are asking ministers at our three parishes to sign-up for ministry at the Mass you will be attending. Because of the increased attendance, especially at Christmas Eve Masses, one of the greatest needs will be for Ministers of Communion and for ushers at all four of the Christmas Eve Masses. No matter which parish you are from, we are encouraging you to assist at any of our parishes. Please sign up for any of the six Masses by calling any of the Parish Offices. The minister needs are: Christmas Eve: Christmas Day: 4:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. 5:30 p.m. Midnight 9:30 a.m. 10:00 a.m. OLA SMG ICM IHM IHM OLA SMG SLM 6 ministers of Communion, 3 Altar Servers, 8 Ushers 5 Ministers of Communion, 3 Altar Servers, 8 Ushers 3 Ministers of Communion, 3 Altar Servers, 8 Ushers 7 Ministers of Communion, 3 Altar Servers, 8 Ushers 5 Ministers of Communion, 3 Altar Servers, 4 Ushers 5 Ministers of Communion, 3 Altar Servers, 4 Ushers PARISH SHARE CONTRIBUTIONS Each week you can see on the individual Parish pages of our bulletin a listing of both the offertory income as well and the Assessed Amount for Parish Share and the contributions so far collected. As we come toward the end of the calendar year, if you are considering making a donation to our parishes, we want to encourage you to make that donation toward Parish Share. Any monies contributed toward Parish Share helps us meet our Assessment and also those contributions are not taxable and will not appear in next year s Assessment. In other words those contributions designated as Parish Share benefit our parish in two ways they help us reach our Assessment and they are not taxed. THE USE OF ST. JOSEPH CHURCH In answer to some questions about why we are once again using St. Joseph Church in Bloomfield, we want to clarify once again. Sr. Mary John as well as the Funeral Directors inquired about the possibility of moving the 11:30 a.m. daily Mass and the funerals from being celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Mission to the St. Joseph Mission to free up the playground area for the School and also make the forming of funeral processions more easily accomplished. The response from Sr. Mary John and the funeral directors is that this move has been very helpful. CHANGES IN LITURGICAL CELEBRATIONS We have been attempting to standardize the liturgical ministries at our three parishes to make it possible for the Clergy Team to be on the same page as they rotate each weekend, and also to help the ministers know what is expected in their roles at each of our parishes. Some changes you have probably noticed are: first, the lector participates in the entrance procession carrying the Book of the Gospels; second, the ushers are now taking up the collection before the offertory procession takes place, since the monetary donations of the congregation are an important part of our participation in the offering; third, all offerings should be placed in the ONE collection at each Mass and there will only be a Second Collection when there is one prescribed by the Diocese; fourth, the altar servers no longer ring the bells at the consecration, since the priest is facing the people and it is no longer necessary to signal the congregation as to when the consecration is taking place; fifth, we are now inviting first-time visitors to be recognized at the end of Mass so that we can welcome them and hopefully make a point to seek them out to further make them feel welcome; and sixth, we are also announcing birthdays and anniversaries to help to make the sense of community that we have come together to celebrate a little more personal. No changes are made just for change sake; and if you have any questions as to the why of any changes, please speak with one of the Clergy Team.

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK This Gaudete Sunday calls us to rejoice because the Lord is near. Does your heart rejoice and sing, or are the pressures and burdens of life weighing you down? We can easily become overwhelmed. The weaknesses and sins of life, indeed our own weakness and sin, eat away at the joy and hope God wants us to know. Those who are grounded in their faith and possess deep spiritual lives know that God is near. Realizing this puts life into perspective. We really want to be free from our burdens but do not always know how to achieve this. We keep stumbling and falling. Advent is a time when we can learn to "do life differently," just like John the Baptist instructed the crowds. Joy and hope are the gifts God offers, not anxiety and despair.
