DIOCESE VICTIM ASSISTANCE HOTLINE: BAPTISM Ordinarily celebrated during one of the weekend Masses. A preparation class is required for parents and godparents. Contact the parish office to make arrangements. MARRIAGE Couples planning to marry must contact one of the parish priests at least six months before the marriage to set a date and begin preparations for this sacrament. SICK AND HOMEBOUND Please notify the parish office if someone is unable to attend Mass and wishes to receive Communion or the Sacrament of the Sick. Also please notify the office if any parishioner is admitted to a hospital. 2 JULY 2, 2017 The Gospel passage from St. Matthew s account seems to be a sobering statement by Jesus to his followers as to what will be expected of them if they wish to continue in his company. Up until this point they have been excited to hear his take on the Scriptures and how they reveal the presence of God; and of course they are also enamored by the miracles that he has been performing. The sense gain has been noticeable and the down side not very evident. Now Jesus says: Whoever love father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. This following of Jesus as a disciple is a real commitment and places some serious demands on the focus of one s heart. The experience they have grown to expect the acceptance of Jesus message and the swelling of the crowds following Jesus are about to change; and Jesus is confronting his followers with that reality and with the fact that discipleship demands sacrifice, commitment and even the cross. Even as Jesus talks turkey about the reality of discipleship, he also is quick to add that: Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Discipleship with Jesus is not just a following of a prophet or a miracle worker but rather is the following of one who is working in and through those who are his disciples and he identifies with them. We, as disciples, make his words our own but at the same time we are making ourselves targets for the hostility that eventually is directed at Jesus. Are we open to that rejection or misunderstanding that can make us feel isolated or apart even from our family members? Those around us may not always be open to seeing Christ in us, but that very identification of Christ s presence is promised to us if we are faithful to the calling we have received as his disciple. Next weekend I will be in Baltimore for a wedding at the Basilica of the Archdiocese and also will have the opportunity to celebrate a Mass at Transfiguration Parish, where I served as pastor for 13 years. Fr. Leon will be celebrating the three Masses next weekend and I will be returning on Monday. 3 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time PETER S PENCE COLLECTION WRAP-UP Last weekend, the special second collection called Peter s Pence took in donations totaling $1, Those donations make it possible for Pope Francis to respond to crises throughout our world. Pope Francis and those he will be able to help, thank you for your generosity. YOUNG ADULT WRAP-UP A group of ten Young Adults gathered on the patio of the parish house last Sunday to enjoy some pizza and fellowship. Future events are being planned so stay tuned. LITURGICAL MINISTERS NEEDED If you would be interested and willing to become a Lector, and Altar Server, a Minister of Communion, or an Usher, please give the Parish Office a call or you can Bro. John. A training session will be offered to those who are willing to serve in any of these Liturgical Ministries. SICK OR HOSPITALIZED If you know of any parishioners who are ill or hospitalized please let Bro. John know so that either he or one of the Ministers of Communion can visit them. Too often we do not hear about someone being hospitalized until after they are discharged. WELCOME IN BAPTISM This weekend we welcome Bruno Bishop Davis in Baptism and we congratulate his parents, Mark & Rachael Davis as they accept the responsibility of training their son in the practice of the Faith. May they be the best of teachers of their child as a new son of God. VOCATION DISCERNMENT AS CAPUCHIN The vocation office is offering a discernment retreat at Alverno (our house in Somerset County) the weekend of August Young men ages 17 40, who would like to learn more about Capuchin life are invited. Transportation can be provided. If you are interested, contact Bro. John and he will put you in contact with our Vocation Director, Bro. Rafael. NEW EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TRAINING Several parishioners expressed interest in serving as Ministers of Communion so there will be a training session for new Ministers on Tuesday July 11 th at 7:15 p.m. at the Parish House. HOLY NAME SOCIETY NEWS On Saturday June 3 rd, members of the Holy Name Society visited veterans at the Aspinwall VA Hospital. Coffee and donuts were served, with staff members accompanying us so that dietary restrictions were observed for those unable to have donuts. In addition, all the men and women were given a commissary book worth $1.00 for their personal use. About 80 veterans were visited and all appreciated the few minutes of company we offered. God bless the men and women who served to protect our freedom. CAPUCHIN GOLF OUTING The Capuchins are once again having a Golf Tournament on the first Friday of August (the 4 th ). Once again it will be held at River Forest Country Club in Freeport. The cost is $130 per golfer and $480 for a Foursome. Brochures with a Registration Form are posted in the outer vestibule of church. All golfers are welcome to join the fun and support the Capuchins.

DOWNTOWN PITTSBURGH ITALIAN STREAT FESTIVAL Eat well and learn more about the rich Italian and Italian-American heritage that has long been a unique part of Southwestern Pennsylvania at the Italian StrEAT Festival sponsored by Highmark. The festival will be held July 8-9 from 10am-6pm along Penn Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh. Each day there will be local Italian vendors, entertainment and lots of good food. Admission is free. For more information visit PRAYER REQUEST BOX You are reminded that the Prayer Request box is available on the table in the back of church to receive any requests you would like to lay before the altar each week. The women of the Rosary Society, as one of their ministries, have been taking those prayer requests on the first Sunday of each month and dividing them up among their members and personally pray for those listed on the intention sheets. The On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative is entering a new phase as we continue planning and working for the future of the Church of Pittsburgh. The On Mission Commission, a group of over 80 clergy, religious and lay members from across the diocese are studying the proposed parish groupings and considering the feedback gathered from recent parish surveys and town hall meetings. The Commission will offer recommendations that will eventually be shared with Bishop Zubik, who will make the ultimate determination. While final decisions have yet to be made, they are being discerned based upon the input you have provided.
