2 PASTOR S COMMENTS. OCTOBER The young man in today s Gospel passage from St. Luke certainly poses a question that is on the lips of many who take the time to ponder the deeper questions of life what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus answer moves from the somewhat simple to the very challenging. From the prescription to keep the commandments to the total commitment to: Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven: then come, follow me. Of course we see the young man s face fall and see him drift away for he had many possessions. Jesus than offers what appears to be an impossibility of entering the kingdom of God when he says: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. The response of the disciples is an echo of our own response: Then who can be saved? An important understanding being called forth by Jesus is to realize that he is not condemning wealth, but he is condemning the attachment to and clinging to wealth as the source of our worth and our meaning. If wealth or possessions become our god than we have no room in our life for the one, living God who gives meaning and value to all that we are and have. What must I do to inherit eternal life starts with committing ourselves to keeping the commandments but it cannot end there. The Lord desires more he desires that we look to him and follow him by giving our lives in service to the God who has given us his all and who asks us to do the same. As you can see there is a new look to the front of our bulletin. The hope is that it will call your attention to the New Mass Schedule in our Grouping. This Monday we begin the new weekday schedule and the new Weekend Mass Schedule begins next Saturday &. Some comments about the new schedule are included in the insert with this bulletin. MASS INTENTIONS FOR 2019 Mass Intentions for 2019 can be scheduled at the parish office beginning October 8th Contact Eileen Monday thru Wednesday 9 am ON MISSION GROUPING Bloomfield, Garfield, Lawrenceville, Polish Hill This week we begin the new Interim Mass Schedule for our Grouping. We understand that no one is ever happy if the Mass time that they always go to at my church is changed, but as we have been charged by the Diocese to come together and move toward becoming one new Parish for our neighborhoods in the next two to three years, we are asking all of our parishioners to give the New Interim Mass Schedule a chance to unite us. There are Mass times that cover the gamut of options for our Grouping and, even though the Mass you prefer is not at your church, we are asking that you continue to come to the Mass time you prefer in our Grouping even if it is in another church in our Grouping. Some points aimed at assisting the transition. The Mass times of both weekdays and weekends at all our churches are listed in this bulletin There is parking at all our churches -St. Maria Goretti has a lot by ICM, SJM, and SLM - Immaculate Heart of Mary has street parking and a lot on Phelan St. -Our Lady of the Angels has a lot on 37 th St. and street parking All our churches are accessible although St. Maria Goretti does not have an accessible bathroom Envelopes placed in the collection at any of our churches will be returned to your parish Transportation will be addressed as needed The Clergy Team will be on a rotation schedule and will celebrate all the Masses at a given parish for the entire week. The young man Jesus with whom Jesus is conversing strives to live the commandments, yet when Jesus asks him to do more he goes away sad. What Jesus asks of him is not unreasonable, yet it is not what the young man expected. The disciples are in shock and Jesus response is to encourage them that, with faith, all things are possible for God. There is no better message for us in the Church of Pittsburgh as the implementation of On Mission for The Church Alive! begins on Monday, October 15 th. We strive to follow the commandments and be faithful to the will of God, yet we, too, are challenged when faced with something we never expected. New parish groupings, new clergy teams and new Mass times can be a challenge for many, but they can also provide new opportunities for the grace of God to be at work in the Church for our good and the good of others seek each day to build up his kingdom. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. * * * * * * * * * * FREE LECTURE Day by Day with the 123 rd PA Volunteers On October 17, 2018, the Lawrenceville Historical Society will host local author Chris George, who will discuss his book and how a devout minister raised a Civil War regiment from Old Allegheny for service in the Union army.
