2 NOVEMBER 12, 2017 November is the month that confronts us with the finality of our lives. The trees are becoming bare, the temperatures have fallen as they usher in winter, the darkness of evening has become too early, and the liturgical year is quickly winding down as we hear scripture readings that remind us of the last times. This is the month that we put out our Book of Life and remember our loved ones who have gone before us. With this backdrop we hear that the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Half are wise and half are foolish. The foolish ones are not really ready to meet the bridegroom because they have not stored up enough oil to keep their lamps lit. As the foolish virgins ask the wise ones to share their oil, we realize that in the parable Jesus is not speaking about oil that keeps wicks lit, but rather of a knowledge and love of God and neighbor, which illumines the hearts of the wise but cannot be shared at the time of the bridegroom s arrival with those who are not prepared. What about us? Are we living our lives in such a way that we are storing up the spirit of our God in our hearts and in the way we live our lives? Is that presence of our God such that there is not a possibility of it running out since it is at the core of who we really are? That is what makes the wise virgins in the parable wise. Their wisdom is reflected in the passage of the Book of Wisdom which we heard today: Resplendent and unfading is wisdom, and she is readily perceived by those who love her, and found by those who seek her. Now is the time to seek and to find that wisdom offered by our God! It is found by always recognizing the presence of our God in our prayer, in our worship, and in the persons we meet each day as we live out our journey back to the Father. We will always be ready to meet the Bridegroom whenever he comes if we do not fall asleep spiritually. We are challenged Nov. 12 Nov. 13 Nov. 13 Nov. 14 Nov. 14 Nov. 16 Nov. 19 Nov. 20 Nov. 21 Nov. 23 Family Centered Religious Ed, after the 10:00 a.m. Mass Catholic Men s Fellowship, 7:00 p.m., RCIA Faith Study, 7:15 p.m., Choir Practice, 5:30 p.m., Church Capuchin Solanus Casey Mass, 6:30 p.m., Church Staff Meeting, 9:15 a.m. Young Adult Dinner, 5:30 p.m., Lower Room Stewardship Committee, 7:15 p.m., Finance Council Meeting, 7:15 p.m., Thanksgiving Day Mass, 9:00 a.m., Church DATES FOR 2018 CALENDAR Before you make your vacation and travel plans we wanted to get the following dates on your calendar so you will not miss these Parish Events: Saturday, February 10 th Cash Bash Fundraiser Sunday, August 5 th Parish Picnic Saturday, October 6 th Oktoberfest Fundraiser THE BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE Throughout the month of November it is the tradition in the Church to remember our loved ones who have gone before us. You are invited to list those names in the Book.
3 32nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SOLANUS CASEY MASS You are invited to join the Capuchins of the Pittsburgh Diocese in celebrating the Beatification of our Capuchin brother, Solanus Casey, at a Mass this Tuesday, November 14th at 6:30pm at Our Lady of the Angels Parish, St. Augustine Church. Our Capuchin Provincial, Fr. Tom Betz, will preside and preach at this Mass and help us to learn more about this remarkable Friar. Our choir, joined by choir members from some of the other Capuchin parishes in the Diocese, will be singing at this special Liturgy. All are welcome to this special celebration! BEATIFICATION MASS FOR SOLANUS CASEY On Saturday, November 18th in the Ford Stadium in Detroit, Fr. Solanus Casey, OFM Cap. will be beatified. A member of the Capuchin Franciscan Order of St. Joseph Province in Detroit and one of the co-founders of the city s Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Father Solanus Casey was born November 25, 1870 and died July 31, He will be the first United States born Capuchin and the second US born male to be beatified. The first US born male was Father Stanley Rother, a priest from Oklahoma, who died in 1981 as a martyr in Guatemala and was beatified on September 23rd. Throughout Fr. Solanus ministry he was a beloved Capuchin Friar credited with miraculous cures and valued for his wise and compassionate counsel. He began as a Capuchin in New York for 20 years, serving at three different parishes. He then moved to Detroit to serve at St. Bonaventure Monastery on Mt. Elliott Street in Detroit, where he worked for 21 years as a porter and spent his life in the service of people, endearing himself to thousands who would seek his counsel. He earned the recognition as the Doorkeeper a Brother who would provide soup for the hungry, kind words for the troubled, and a healing touch for the ill. If you get the EWTN TV channel you will be able to view the Beatification Ceremony at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday November 18th. COMMEMORATION OF SOLANUS CASEY Bishop Zubik has given permission for the friars in all the Capuchin Parishes of the Diocese to celebrate the Masses next weekend in Thanksgiving for the life of Solanus Casey. There will be special readings and prayers for those Masses. JANUARY LOTTERY Tickets are now on sale for our very popular January Lottery. A $5.00 ticket gives you a chance to win $2,500 in prize money during the 31 days of January. The winner each evening will be determined by the first drawing of the Pick Three Evening Lottery. It is a reminder, like so many others in the Gospels, to be prepared for when the Lord comes to call us to himself. Will our hearts and lives be ready to meet the Lord and dwell with him, or will we be caught off guard and our salvation be affected? In a more temporal way, have we been preparing ourselves for the changes that are coming as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative? Have we taken the time to educate ourselves about what will happen (Bishop Zubik s announcements on April 26 th, building relationships, new clergy assignments, new Mass schedules) and what will not happen (no immediate parish mergers, no immediate church closings) over the next 12 months? Don t be caught off guard by On Mission. Be prepared and be an agent of growth and support in the Church as a disciple of Jesus. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. ON MISSION TIMELINE The timeline, as presented by the Diocese, for the On Mission Reorganization is that on April 26th Bishop Zubik will announce the final groupings, the names of the 49 pastors, the parochial vicars, the deacons, and the number of Masses that will be possible in each grouping. After that announcement the new team of priests and deacons will meet with the current pastors, pastoral staffs and the parishioners of all the parishes that will make up the new grouping to determine a smooth transition to the new parish; determine the best Mass time for the multiple sites; and propose a name for the new parish. The New Parish will begin officially on October 15th and no church buildings will close for at least the first year of operation. More will be presented as it unfolds in the coming months and over next year from April until October. CEMETERY NEWS On Tuesday, November 21 st the records of St. Augustine Cemetery will be transferred to the newly formed Catholic Parish Cemeteries Association. With this transfer St. Augustine Cemetery will no longer be our Parish Cemetery. All transactions and questions will be made to the new office at 1000 Logue St. Pgh. PA Our St. Augustine Parish Cemetery is currently about $400 less per grave than those of the Catholic Cemetery Association. If you are considering the purchase of some gravesites in St. Augustine Cemetery you would benefit from purchasing them before November 21 st. If you would like further information, please give a call to St. Augustine Cemetery at and Pat or Dan Dobies will be happy to answer any of your questions or assist you in the purchase of a gravesite.
