DIOCESE VICTIM ASSISTANCE HOTLINE: BAPTISM Ordinarily celebrated during one of the weekend Masses. A preparation class is required for parents and godparents. Contact the parish office to make arrangements. MARRIAGE Couples planning to marry must contact one of the parish priests at least six months before the marriage to set a date and begin preparations for this sacrament. SICK AND HOMEBOUND Please notify the parish office if someone is unable to attend Mass and wishes to receive Communion or the Sacrament of the Sick. Also please notify the office if any parishioner is admitted to a hospital. 2 PASTOR S COMMENTS. This Sunday s gospel passage from St. Mark tells us of a deaf man with a speech impediment being powerfully healed by Jesus so that he began to hear and speak plainly. As with most of the healings recounted in the Gospels the physical ailment that is made whole is a symbol of the spiritual and religious healing that is both needed and cured by Jesus. There are so many ways that we lack the ability to hear what Jesus is trying to say to us; and also so many ways that we suffer from an impediment that keeps us from speaking the message of God clearly. We often fail to speak that word when we should because we are too embraced or afraid of what others may say or think about us. We also can have an impediment for speaking God s word when we turn our back on him or our actions are contrary to the values that Jesus hopes to speak through us. The Lord desires to speak through us what Isaiah proclaims in the first Reading today: Say to those whose hearts are frightened: be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. The Lord desires to bring healing to our listening so that we can have the courage to speak out and proclaim the release from fear that Isaiah speaks about. As with those in Jesus time, we too can fail to see the ways that our God wishes to speak his word of encouragement to our hearts and the ways that he wants to have us proclaim to others what we ourselves have been blessed to hear. Come, Lord Jesus, and heal our deafness and any impediment of our speech that keeps us from hearing your word and proclaiming it by our lives. * * * * * * * * * * * * With this bulletin you will find an insert that contains the new interim Mass schedule for our Grouping and also an important letter to be read with that schedule that will help you understand the new Clergy Team s reasoning for changing the Masses at our three Parishes. Money collected in this Collection is used by Bishop Zubik to assist children in Catholic Schools. Last year a sizable assistance was given to St. Maria Goretti School. ON MISSION ADORATION Each parish of the Diocese has committed to having a period of Eucharistic Adoration praying for the On Mission effort. This Wednesday, September 12 th is the date for our Parish s commitment. The Adoration will take place in the Parish House Chapel from 9:00 a.m. 4:00pm. You are encouraged to come and spend some time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament praying for our On Mission Grouping and for the On Mission effort throughout the Diocese. HOLY NAME SOCIETY MEETING The Holy Name Society meeting will take place on Sunday, September 23 rd in the social hall under the church following the 8:30 a.m. Mass. A rosary will be offered for the sick of the society and parish community at 8:10 a.m. New members welcome.

3 23rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CATECHETICAL COMMISSIONING Next Sunday at the 10:00 a.m. Mass all the young people and their parents and the catechist of our Family Centered Religious Education Program will be commissioned as we begin a new year of the Program. This year the young people from the other parishes of our Grouping, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Maria Goretti, will also be a part of the Program. Come and support the parents, children and catechist of our Program with your presence and your prayers next Sunday. Following the Mass there will be coffee and donuts in The Lower Room beneath the church, to meet and greet the Catechists and tour the classrooms. The first gathering of the Family Centered Religious Education Program for class will be Sunday September 30 th. RCIA FAITH STUDY Are you or someone you know interested in joining the Catholic Church? Are you married to a Catholic spouse, raising children Catholic, and/or interested in knowing more about the Faith to be able to share with them? Are you a Catholic who was baptized but never received the Eucharist or Confirmation? The RCIA Faith Study is offered to assist you! There is no time like the present to begin your inquiry into the Faith! Classes start on Monday, September17 at 7:15 p.m. in the parish house. PADRE PIO MASS SEPTEMBER 24 th The Capuchins will be celebrating a Mass in honor of St. Padre Pio on Monday September 24 th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Church. Bro. Mick Joyce, OFM Cap. will be the presider and preacher. Before the Mass from 6:00 p.m. 6:50 p.m. there will be a number of priest friars available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. After this Mass there will be the opportunity to venerate the relics of St. Padre Pio, which include one of the gloves that covered one of the sacred wounds. All are welcome! OKTOBERFEST - Ooctober 6 th Our Oktoberfest Fundraiser will take place on Saturday October 6 th at the Teamster Hall at 4701 Butler Street. This will be a fun night with German music and song by Kevin Solecki and an outstanding menu of warm Pretzels with beer cheese, Brats, Hotdogs, Pulled Chicken, Sauerkraut, Spätzle, German Potato Salad, Cucumber Salad, Mixed Greens, and of course Apple Strudel. There will also be a number of Oktoberfest Beers and German Wine on sale for $3.00. Tickets are only $20.00 and go on sale this weekend. At this event there will also be some great Baskets being raffled off as well as 50/50 and the drawing of our big Money Raffle. Spread the word to fellow workers, family and friends. OKTOBERFEST MONEY RAFFLE In conjunction with our Oktoberfest Fundraiser we are having a Money Raffle. The prizes for the Raffle are $1500, $500 and $250. Your help is needed to make this Raffle a success. Tickets are: 1 for $2.00, 3 for $5.00 and 12 for $20.00 and the winners need not be present to win. The stubs and the money for the chances can be placed in an envelope and returned through the collection basket or they can be mailed to the parish office. There are extra books of chances available in the back of church or at the parish office, so please take more if you can sell them. Thanks for your help with this important fundraiser. BASKETS RAFFLE Next weekend a number of Outstanding Baskets of prizes will be on display in the back of church and Tickets for the raffle will be on sale. A sheet of 26 tickets costs $10.00 and you can place them in the bags in front of the baskets that you hope to win. The drawings will take place at the October 6 th Oktoberfest Fundraiser. You need not be present to win.

4 PRAYER REQUEST BOX You are reminded that the Prayer Request box is available on the table in the back of church to receive any requests you would like to lay before the altar each week. The women of the Rosary Society, as one of their ministries, have been taking those prayer requests on the first Sunday of each month and dividing them up among their members and personally pray for those listed on the intention sheets BUNDLE DRIVE The St. Vincent De Paul Society of St. Maria Goretti Parish will sponsor a bundle drive truck on Saturday, September 29th, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mission parking lot. We will collect clothing, household items, bedding, lamps and kitchenware. (Please, NO LARGE FURNITURE items.) Start cleaning out your excess and help the needy by your donations. FREE LECTURE: ALLEGHENY CEMETERY On September 19, 2018, the Lawrenceville Historical Society will present a power point lecture on Allegheny Cemetery. The program will explore why it is a Romantic Garden Cemetery, its rich architecture, preview its natural beauty, and look at why it is a great repository of Pittsburgh history. Free lecture will take place at the Lawrenceville Branch of the Carnegie Library, 279 Fisk Street, Pittsburgh, at 6:30 p.m. No reservations are required. Even as we read the accounts of the miracles Jesus worked, like the healing of the deaf and mute man in today s Gospel, we are amazed at the powerful love of God at work to heal and strengthen us. In particular, Jesus cry of Ephphatha! (be opened!), is not simply so that the deaf man s ears would be open and that his tongue would be freed. It is also a call for his heart to be opened in faith and trust in God. The Lord cries out Ephphatha! for us, too, that we might be opened to his powerful love at work for and in and through us. This is not only for our benefit, but for the benefit of our parishes, our communities, the Church and the world. As we prepare for the implementation of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, the Lord invites us to be opened to the work of the Spirit so that we can be strengthened for the work of building the Church.
