EUCHARISTIC ADORATION There is the opportunity for Eucharistic Adoration every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. in the Parish House Chapel. BAPTISM Ordinarily celebrated during one of the weekend Masses. A preparation class is required for parents and godparents. Contact the parish office to make arrangements. MARRIAGE Couples planning to marry must contact one of the parish priests at least six months before the marriage to set a date and begin preparations for this sacrament. SICK AND HOMEBOUND Please notify the parish office if someone is unable to attend Mass and wishes to receive Communion or the Sacrament of the Sick. Also please notify the office if any parishioner is admitted to a hospital. 2 NOVEMBER 29, 2015 PASTOR S COMMENTS Today begins the new Liturgical Year of the Church. In one sense it is hard to get our heads around the thought of this being the beginning of a New Year, but in another sense it means that the significance of Advent does not get lost in parties, toasts and fireworks. The Liturgical Year begins in a much more subdued way as we prepare with growing expectation of an Arrival an Advent of our Savior. This first Sunday of Advent has Jesus telling us of signs to expect for his Second Coming. We begin this Season being reminded that this four week period of preparation for the arrival of our Savior is not just an historical remembrance of the birth of Christ in Bethlehem but is also a realization of a future coming of Christ in glory as well as a present coming of our Lord and Savior in Word and Sacrament and Service each day. Of course the overwhelming list of tasks shopping, cleaning, baking, card writing, etc. in preparation for Christmas Day can seem to overshadow any focus on anything else. The Season of Advent, however, is offered in the Liturgical Year not as a four week countdown to the arrival of Christmas Day but a four week gift of time and liturgical celebrations to refocus us on the need for and the realization of the coming each day of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Let us make time during this very busy four weeks, through prayer and reflection, to indeed prepare the way of the Lord! If you have been observant of the growing membership in our Parish you have noticed that we have been blessed with many more young adults and many more young children. Deacon Richard found the following write-up from another parish posted on the internet which I thought which I thought would be worth passing on. TO THE PARENTS OF OUR YOUNG CHIL- DREN, MAY WE SUGGEST Relax! God put the wiggle in children. Don t feel you have to suppress it in God s house. All are welcome! Feel free to sit toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear. Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions of the priest, altar servers, choir, etc. (For children 4 years and older we have books on the Mass in the Vestry for their use) Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. If you have to leave Mass with your child, feel free to do so but please come back. As Jesus said, Let the children come to me. Remember that the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this house of worship. Our secretary, Eileen, plans to return on Monday December 7 th, so we look forward to that. For one more week Chrissy, Judy Zavatchen and Bro. Jonathan will be covering the door and phone. If, by chance, you call and get the answering machine, be sure to leave a message and someone will return your call. Please keep Eileen in your prayers for her continued recovery. 3 First Sunday of Advent THE RITE OF CATECHUMENS This weekend we are celebrating the Rite of Catechumens with two adults George Sakmar, Jr. and Breanna Goughler who have never been baptized and who began the Faith Study in September. This Rite formally welcomes and blesses them in the first step toward full membership in the Church, which will take place at the Easter Vigil (March 26 th ) with the reception of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Please keep them in your prayers. GIFT FOR ADVENT This weekend as you leave the church the ushers will be offering all the adults of the parish a meditation booklet for Advent. There are two versions of the booklet one larger version has the readings for each day along with the meditation and the smaller version has just the meditation we ask that you please choose just one version or the other so that we have enough of the booklets for all the adults of the parish. JANUARY LOTTERY TICKETS All the January Lottery Tickets are now out. If you would still like to purchase one you will need to contact someone who took out some tickets. All stubs and money need to be returned by December 30 th. GIVING TREE GIFTS RETURNED Next weekend all the gifts purchased for our Giving Tree outreach to Arsenal School are due back. The purchased items should be wrapped and the ornament taped to the gift and then returned under the tree by next Sunday. Thank you to all the parishioners who have been so generous in responding to this Giving Tree outreach. YOUTH GROUP NEWS The Lawrenceville Cookie Mall is being held this year at the Boys and Girls Club on Butler Street in Lawrenceville and the OLA Youth Group will be there selling cookies. They have peanut butter blossoms, snickerdoodles, chocolate chips, pizzelles (anise, chocolate, and pumpkin) and sugar cookies that can be decorated on site. It is wonderful event with many different vendors, so stop by and support our youth group on Dec 5 th. The mall runs from 10 am - 4pm. You might even have a chance to see Santa Claus! WELCOME IN BAPTISM Last Sunday we were happy to welcome in Baptism Shea Fitzpatrick Foley, the son of Kevin & Carah Foley. We congratulate them and pray that they will be the best of teachers of their son in the practice of the faith. CHILDREN S CHOIR FOR CHRISTMAS All the children of our Parish, whether in our Family Centered Religious Ed Program or in Catholic Schools, are invited to be a part of a Children s Choir that is being formed to sing at the 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass. (This Children s Choir will replace the Christmas Pageant that we have traditionally had the children involved in on Christmas Eve). Chrissy will be working with the children at two practices (Saturday Dec. 5 th & Saturday Dec. 19 th from 1:00 3:00 p.m.) We encourage our parents to sign up your children to be a part of this Choir and also to commit yourselves to making sure your children make it to the two practices. BOWLING OUTING INVITATION The Parish Young Adults Group invites the members of the Parish to join them for the OLOA Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Bowling Extravaganza! This fun event will be held next Sunday December 6th, 1:00-4:00 pm, Arsenal Lanes. Price is $6 plus 50 cent games, shoes, hot dogs, and soda. Cash only! Prizes will be given based on scores and on the 'best' Ugly Christmas Sweaters. The Steelers are playing an 8:30 p.m. game so you will not have to miss that game to be part of the Bowling Fun. CATHOLICS ADULT EDUCATION WORKSHOP ARE YOU AN ACCIDENTAL OR INTENTIONAL DISCIPLE OF CHRIST? Our CATHOLICS Cluster Education Committee is offering a workshop to assist us in beginning this Advent Season of expectation and preparation for Christ s birth. Come walk with us on the path of discipleship to knowing and following Jesus. Let s go back to the roots of our Catholic faith and explore who Jesus is, what He expects of us, and how we can fulfill His expectations. CHRISTMAS FLOWER MEMORIAL If you would like to remember your loved ones (living or deceased) you may do so. Please place your donation in the envelope marked Christmas Flower Offering (or use a plain white envelope) with the name of the person(s) you wish to remember. Bring it to the parish office or drop it in the collection basket by December 21st so we can have the names listed for our Christmas bulletin. ALL SOULS ENVELOPES The All Souls envelopes listing the loved ones that you would likeremembered at the altar during the month of Novemberhave been placed on the table in front of the altar and will remain there throughout the month. THE BOOK OF LIFE You will also find a Book of Life near the pulpit in front of the poster listing the names of all those who were buried from our church since last November. You are invited to list the names of any deceased that you would like remembered during this month. RCIA FAITH STUDY *Are you or someone you know interested in joining the Catholic Church? *Are you married to a Catholic spouse, raising children Catholic, and/or interested in knowing more about the Faith to be able to share with them? *Are you a Catholic who was baptized but never received the Eucharist or Confirmation? THE ROSARY SOCIETY The Rosary Society will meet December 6 after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. The rosary will be said before mass. The meting will be held in the church meeting room. HIGHEST HONORS ACHIEVED We extend our congratulations to Margaret Mann who achieved Highest Honors for the first quarter of the school year at Oakland Catholic High School. ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! Legos building blocks are all the rage. They appeal to everybody -- kids and adults because at heart all of us are builders. A key understanding of On Mission to The Church Alive! is our responsibility in building the kingdom of God. That sounds like a scary proposition, much too big for us. But it s simple. St. Therese of Lisieux explained: A word, a kindly smile, will often suffice to gladden a wounded and sorrowful heart. That s how we can build up the kingdom of God one small act of kindness at a time!
