2 FEBRUARY 4, 2018 What is the work that each of us is called to do? Of course that can be answered in a number of ways. We have particular occupations that is the employment that puts bread on our tables and a roof over our heads. That is the work that we hear Job lamenting in the first Scripture reading today as he says: Is not man s life on earth drudgery? Are not his days those of hirelings? He is a slave who longs for the shade, a hireling who waits for his wages. This is spoken like a man who has lost the broader purpose of his work and is not seeing it in the context of one s life s work. Jesus heals Peter s mother-in-law and he also cured many diseases and drove out many demons but when he was told, Everyone is looking for you, his response was, Let us go on to the nearby villages that we may preach there also. He realized through prayer that his life s work was not just to heal the persons coming to him, but it was to go forth and preach and bring healing and wholeness to all the children of the Father. What about us? We need to work hard in all we do, but it is important that we do not lose ourselves or become defined by the work we do or the people around us. It is the desire of our God that we not lose sight of our deeper calling to go out and make disciples by our words and actions. We do not have to go to other towns to do this, but rather to make a profound difference where we live and work so that our life s work of loving and serving others is seen wherever and whenever we are seen. As St. Paul says in our second reading from Corinthians today: I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. I have become all things to all, to save at least some. Like Jesus, let us take time to go off and pray throughout this week in order to keep our focus on our deeper calling to be faithful to God s work in our lives. being raffled at the Cash Bash. In both case you need not be present to win but I do hope that you will plan to come and enjoy a fun evening next Saturday at the Teamster Hall. ARE YOU BEING CALLED? I would like to pose to all the high school age and older young men of the parish to consider whether you might be receiving the call to follow the Lord more radically into the life as a Capuchin Franciscan. The perfect opportunity to reflect on and even test that calling would be to sign up for a Capuchin Vocation Awareness Weekend. Our Vocation Director, Bro. Rafa, would be happy to sign you up for a weekend either at our farmhouse called Alverno near Meyersdale, PA on the weekend of March 2-4 or for a weekend to take a look at our College Program at Borromeo in Cleveland the weekend of March If you would like to learn more about either possibility or to discuss Capuchin life, please see Bro. John and he would be happy to discuss this calling. Application of the work of Erik Erikson, a pioneer in life course development and play, will be discussed. Presenter for this free workshop is: Karen VanderVen, Ph.D. A donation in her name can be made to a charity of your choice or to Our Lady of Angels Parish. Date: Saturday, February 10, 2018 Time: 10:00 AM-noon Location: Our Lady of Angels Parish Lower Hall Participation will be limited to 30 participants and the workshop will be filled on a first come, first registered basis. Contact Rosemarie Perla at: Rosemarie@PerlaGroup.com Everyone Is Looking for Jesus Throughout the Gospels people come to Jesus in order that he might touch their lives or the lives of someone they love. Some are healed from illnesses, including illnesses endured since birth. Others are freed from the torment of demons. Still others are raised from the dead and restored to life for the praise and glory of his name. And, as today s Gospel reminds us, Jesus travels from village to village so that the power and love of God can be experienced by people everywhere. As we prepare for the changes of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, one thing that will remain constant is the love of God at work through the Church. As we form new communities of faith we will still have many opportunities to come to Jesus in the Eucharist and reconciliation for strength and healing. And as we form new relationships in love we will be called to go out and share the life of God with others. Let us continue to prayer for the success of On Mission and for the inspiration that will enliven us to help grow the Church. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
