2 OCTOBER 18, 2015 PASTOR S COMMENTS. It is striking how often Jesus is brought around to declaring the basis of greatness in his Kingdom. In this week s passage from Mark, we hear of the two very close disciples, John and James, hoping to sit one at his right and one on his left when Jesus comes into his glory. Of course they really do not know what they are asking because they have not grasped the path that they must walk along with Jesus if they hope to be in his glory. Jesus tells them: For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." The service of Jesus is a pouring out of his life in love for all of us. This is the type of service that he is about to show his disciples in his passion and death and it is the level of service that he charts out for his followers. Jesus asks James & John: Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" Their answer is: We can! The reality is that they will drink of the cup of service that will entail their being willing to lay down their lives. This is the nature of the service that Jesus is asking of us. Are we willing to say: We can! along with these disciples even though we, like them, are not clear on where this commitment may lead us. Let us continue to have the courage to follow Jesus in total service to the Father and to those around us. O c t. 1 8 Religious Ed.
