MARRIAGE Couples planning to marry must contact one of the parish priests at least six months before the marriage to set a date and begin preparations for this sacrament. SICK AND HOMEBOUND Please notify the parish office if someone is unable to attend Mass and wishes to receive Communion or the Sacrament of the Sick. Also please notify the office if any parishioner is admitted to a hospital. 2 JULY 26, 2015 PASTOR S COMMENTS. We hear today in a passage from St. John s Gospel account the very familiar story of Jesus taking very little and transforming it to feed the hungers of many. It is a remarkable miracle to feed five thousand with five barley loaves and two fish; and if that is not incredible enough there were also twelve wicker baskets of fragments leftover. We can see why folks may be thinking of making Jesus king, since he is seen as the Prophet very similar to Elisha, who fed many people with just a few barley loaves also. Of course another part of this story is that a young lad was willing to give up his five loaves and two fish. That is quite a commitment to give up all that he had to feed himself and his family. It seems that Jesus is also trying to teach us about being open handed with all the things we possess. Are we willing to present all we have in order to allow Jesus to transform it and meet the needs of so many more? Jesus is not just teaching us about feeding the hungers of our body but more importantly to feed the hungers of our spirit if we do not hold back. What are the God given gifts that I have that the Lord would like to multiply and touch the lives of those around me? Am I willing to let go of any possessiveness and any fears and put my gifts at the service of both God and those around me? If I am unable to see all that I have as gift than it is very difficult to give away what I consider as MY possession or what I have earned. This story of the multiplication of loaves is not just about Jesus feeding five thousand but it is also about our willingness, like the lad in the story, to allow Jesus to transform what we have for the good of others and the honor and glory of God. Butler Street will be closed to motor vehicle traffic from 8:00 a.m. noon. We once again would like to do some outreach to the folks that come to our neighborhood. We still need some volunteers to staff a table at the corner of Butler and 37th to pass out fliers as well as invite folks to come and tour our church. If you can help, please see Bill Sinclair or Bro. John. I do hope that you and your family are planning to come to the Parish Picnic next Sunday. It is always a great time to relax, share some good food and get to know some of your fellow parishioners a little better. Do not let a lack of transportation keep you from coming. We will make sure that you have a ride. Please take the time to sign up this weekend so that we can coordinate this fun event. HIPSTER T-SHIRTS ON SALE Our parish has produced a T-Shirt that helps to make our parish known through the Capuchin Friars as the Bearded Brothers the Original Lawrenceville Hipsters. The T-Shirts are on display and available in the back of church and can be purchased for $ Hopefully they can be a tool for evangelization as it may lead people to ask about our parish and give the person wearing it a chance to spread the word about our Parish Community.

3 16th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PARISH PATRONAL FEAST DAY AUGUST 2 nd Next Sunday is the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels, our Patronal Feast Day. This Feast originates from the name of the foundational church of the Franciscan Order called the Portiuncula or little portion, which was dedicated to Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Angels. This little church in the Valley below Assisi was where St. Francis assembled the brothers, received St. Clare in her call to establish a new order of nuns, and emphasized to the brothers the importance of this place and of the relationship of the friars with Mary as the Mother of God. Francis requested and received from the pope the designation of a plenary indulgence for visiting the little church on the Celebration of Our Lady of the Angels Feast. This plenary indulgence was later extended to all Franciscan churches on this day. We will commemorate our Feast Day at the Masses next weekend. PORTIUNCULA INDULGENCE A plenary indulgence is the total remission of all temporal punishment due to sin. The requirements for this indulgence is the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Communion either the week before or the week after the Feast along with a visit to a Franciscan church sometime between noon Aug. 1st until midnight Aug. 2nd and praying an Our Father and the Creed for the intention of the Pope. PARISH PICNIC SUNDAY, AUGUST 2 nd Our Parish Picnic will take place next Sunday August 2 nd beginning at noon at the same park as last year in the North Hills (McKnight Village). Once again a pig roast is planned so there will be great food, drink and games for children and adults. This is the last weekend to sign up so that we have a count for the Picnic. Please take time to sign up in the back of church or you can call the Parish Office. List your name, how many adults and children are coming, whether you need or can provide transportation, and what potluck dish you will bring to share. The parish will provide the pig and the refreshments. If you have any sports equipment that you are willing to bring to the park (bocce, horseshoes, volleyball net and ball, basketball, corn hole, etc.) please call the Parish Office to let us know. MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE RESULTS Last weekend s Missionary Cooperative Collection realized $ 1, The Benedictines thank you for your generous response. WEDDING CONGRATULATIONS We extend congratulations to Antonio Williams & Brianna Olian who were united in the Sacrament of Marriage this Saturday at our church. May the vows they make to each other strengthen them to be the sign of Christ s presence in the Church and the world! BAPTISM CONGRATULATIONS This past Sunday Adalyn LaVerne Neff, the daughter of Amy & David Neff, and Lillian LaVerne Jativa, the daughter of Melissa & Jeffrey Jativa were baptized by their great uncle, Deacon Richard. We congratulate the parents and pray that they may be the best of teachers of their children in the ways of faith. RCIA FAITH STUDY Are you or someone you know interested in joining the Catholic Church? GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION The Diocese of Pittsburgh is once again planning its annual Golden Wedding Celebration for couples who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in This year s event will begin with Mass at St. Paul Cathedral on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. Bishop Zubik will be the main celebrant. A reception will follow in the lower hall at the Cathedral. Cathedral and hall are both accessible. The women of the Rosary Society, as one of their ministries, have been taking those prayer requests on the first Sunday of each month and dividing them up among their members and personally pray for those listed on the intention sheets. POPE FRANCIS FROM LAUDATO SI We are not God. The earth was here before us and it has been given to us. This allows us to respond to the charge that Judaeo-Christian thinking, on the basis of the Genesis account which grants man dominion over the earth (cf. Gen 1:28), has encouraged the unbridled exploitation of nature by painting him as domineering and destructive by nature. This is not a correct interpretation of the Bible as understood by the Church. Although it is true that we Christians have at times incorrectly interpreted the Scriptures, nowadays we must forcefully reject the notion that our being created in God s image and given dominion over the earth justifies absolute domination over other creatures. The biblical texts are to be read in their context, with an appropriate hermeneutic, recognizing that they tell us to till and keep the garden of the world (cf. Gen 2:15). Tilling refers to cultivating, ploughing or working, while keeping means caring, protecting, overseeing and preserving. This implies a relationship of mutual responsibility between human beings and nature. Each community can take from the bounty of the earth whatever it needs for subsistence, but it also has the duty to protect the earth and to ensure its fruitfulness for coming generations. The earth is the Lord s (Ps 24:1); to him belongs the earth with all that is within it (Dt 10:14). Thus God rejects every claim to absolute ownership: The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine; for you are strangers and sojourners with me (Lev 25:23).
