2 APRIL 29, 2018 PASTOR S COMMENTS On this Fifth Sunday of Easter we are treated to the beautiful image of the vine and the branches. Jesus says that I am the vine and you are the branches. We are challenged to see that our fruitfulness is dependent on our being grafted to the vine and also allowing the Father to prune from us whatever it is that is selfish and possessive. It is made clear that to be a disciple of Jesus is dependent upon our not only knowing Jesus and his word but also bearing fruit in love and service to those around us. Jesus says: By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples." St. Irenaeus, one of the Fathers of the early church, made this truth clear when he wrote: The glory of God is the human person fully alive. We are most alive when we are attached to the vine and we are most a reflection of the glory of God when we are bearing much fruit for his honor and glory. St. John in the second reading today says: let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. It is much easier to say that we love or talk about love but much more difficult to actually make sure the love takes flesh in the concrete actions that break down barriers and bring about unity among people. In the Acts of the Apostles we hear of the people in Jerusalem not trusting Paul as he came into their faith community professing belief in Christ after his conversion. He had been a very active persecutor of the Christians and they were naturally suspicious of his motives for this sudden change. It was only through the intercession of Barnabas as well as the active preaching and willingness to accept even persecution for his belief that they were able to believe that his conversion was sincere and real. What about us? Are people around us not only hearing us talking the talk but also seeing us walking the walk. It will be important, as we now move forward in the more concrete reality of On Mission, that we indeed show that we really are united with the Vine and are open to the Father pruning from us what is not open to change and new life so that we can bear the fruit that is called forth from us as beloved disciples in the Body of Christ s Church. This weekend a letter will be read at all the Masses announcing the final Grouping of Parishes, of which we will be a part, as well as the clergy that will be assigned to this new Grouping. Over the next six months all the current pastors and administrators will remain in place while the new clergy team gets to know the operations of the parishes as well as beginning to meet the parishioners who will be a part of the new Parish. The new clergy team will then take over the shepherding of this new Grouping on October 15 th. Nothing will close for 1 3 years so that the new clergy team, in consultation with the parishioners of the new Grouping, can decide what will make this new Grouping into the most spiritually vibrant and financially solvent Church Community moving into the future. Next weekend the Pittsburgh Catholic newspaper will be mailed to all registered parishioners and in it will be listed all the new Grouping of churches throughout the Diocese as well as the clergy assignments related to On Mission for The Church Alive! There will be multiple articles that give context to these changes, questions and answers about On Mission, and a glossary of On Mission terms. If you do not receive the Pittsburgh Catholic in the mail this week, please let us know so that we can check your registration. I will be celebrating the 4:00 p.m. Mass next Saturday but will be away next Sunday celebrating my great niece s First Communion at Most Holy Trinity Church in Huntingdon, PA, near State College, PA. Fr. John Pfannenstiel, the director of the Capuchin Mission Office, will be celebrating the two Masses next Sunday. This Sunday at the 10:00 a.m. Mass we are happy to celebrate the First Communion of Olympia Stapleton. As she looks forward to this day of receiving Christ in his Eucharistic presence for the first time it is also an opportunity for each of us to renew our faith and excitement for this beautiful gift that Christ left us as food and drink for our journey.

3 5th SUNDAY OF EASTER CONGRATULATIONS, NEWLY MARRIED This weekend we congratulate Christopher Spataro & Jacqueline Heuer as they are united in the Sacrament of Marriage in our parish. We celebrate with them and ask for God s blessing upon them to be a witness of God s love to each other and to all of us as they live this beautiful Sacrament. WELCOME IN BAPTISM This Sunday we are happy to welcome Santino Anthony Mignanelli as a newly Baptized son of God. We congratulate his parents, Jason & Nancy Mignanelli, and pray that they may be the best of teachers of their son in the ways of Faith. PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 20th Pentecost Sunday is May 20th and once again for the celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and upon us we want to commemorate this event by inviting parishioners to proclaim the Intercessions at each of the Masses in different languages. At the first Pentecost the people heard the disciples proclaiming the praises of God in their many diverse languages, so we are hoping to have parishioners who know a language other than English come forward to pray one of the intentions that weekend. If you would be willing to pray an intention in a language other than English, please sign up in the back of church or call the Parish Office to sign up and we will make sure to send you the intercession so that you have time to translate it. We need your help so please take time to sign up and be a part. ENROLLMENT TIME FOR RELIGIOUS ED It s time to enroll your children in the Pre- Kindergarten (age 4) to Grade 8 Family Centered Religious Education Program, which begins on Catechetical Sunday, September 16, We need to encourage early registration so that we have sufficient time to order the materials that will be used in the Family Centered Program. Registration forms and return envelopes are located in church on the table in front of St. Anthony Chapel. All children of the Parish that are not attending Catholic School should be registered in our Program. For more information you may call Paula A. Consider becoming a Catechist. The Catechist is a person of Faith commissioned to carry out the teaching mission of the parish through the instruction of youngsters in the knowledge and understanding of our Faith. The role of the Catechist is a vital ministry to the parish because through the Catechist s words and actions, the message of the Gospel becomes significant in the lives of youngsters. If you can commit to about 4 hours a month September through May, enjoy working with youngsters, ages 4 through 14, and want to expand your own knowledge of the Faith, than become a part of our Family Centered Religious Education Program. If you are graduating, please or call in your name and what school you are graduating from and what school you will be attending so that we can list our graduates in a future bulletin. COLLEGE STUDENTS & COLLEGE BOUND There is a group called Newman Connection that seeks to connect college students with the campus minister on your campus. We are asking that any parishioner currently in College or preparing to go to College this fall please contact the Parish Office or Bro. John to give us information about the College you are or will attend. We would like to connect you with the Catholic Campus Minister at that College. Give the Parish Office a call or parish@oloa.org. YOUNG ADULT NEWS "Theology on Tap will kick-off their 5th season of great fellowship and engaging speakers offering enlightening perspectives on our Catholic faith. All Young Adults are invited to a Monday, May 7th gathering on the rooftop of Steel Cactus in Shadyside! The speaker will be the nationally known author, Emily Stimpson Chapman, speaking on "Tasting the Love of God." Emily will share how God makes his love known for us through both our daily bread and His heavenly bread, the Eucharist. Come at 7:00 to meet other young adults from around the city and enjoy appetizers and drinks on the rooftop. Emily will speak at 7:30pm. Everyone is welcome, so be sure to invite your friends! NEED HOME REPAIRS? The St. John and Paul Senior Connection outreach will be available again this year to assist Lawrenceville seniors, who own their homes, with the home maintenance and repair needs beginning in early May. If you are interested in being added to the list of homes, please call Toni Jester, There are some carryovers from 2017, so work on new listing of homes may not be able to be added until the June 16 th workday. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY If you are interested in volunteering a day to help seniors in need in the Lawrenceville neighborhood, check out the Sts. John & Paul website: and select the Outreach tab at the top of the page, then select senior connections. If you have any questions, please call Suzanne Roy at Senior Connection volunteers must be 18 years or older or if younger than 18 they must be accompanied by a parent. RESTORATION OF THE CHURCH TOWERS As you can see we have begun a major project of doing some needed repointing of the two church towers. Some of the brick had begun to become loose so some attention was needed to prevent future problems. Arch Masonry & Restoration is doing the work and will have the equipment in the front or on the side of the church for the next 6 to 8 weeks. We are blessed to be able to do this restoration using some of the savings that we have. As the PA Turnpike use to say: Temporary inconvenience for permanent improvement! This Weekend On Mission Announcements Today at Mass you will hear about the On Mission for The Church Alive! decisions for your parish. In the announcement you will learn: (1) the final Parish Grouping that you parish will be in; (2) the clergy team assigned to serve the grouping; and (3) the maximum number of Masses for the grouping beginning October 15 th. With these announcements, there are still many tasks ahead to bring about the vision for vibrant parishes in our communities. The first task over the coming weeks and months is to build relationships, especially between the parish communities in the grouping and with the clergy teams who are eager to begin serving you. As we continue to share in the joy of the resurrection of Jesus during the Easter season, we must not be discouraged by the challenges that may come. Instead, we are called to go forward with hope for the good of our parishes and for the good of our own lives with God. The information about your grouping and all the groupings is available online at onmissionchurchalive.org and will be shared in your parish bulletin and the Pittsburgh Catholic next weekend.
