2 Preparing for worship A group of us just returned from New York City, where we led the last week of CLUE Camp (Children Living the Urban Experience) for kids who live in the neighborhoods of Hell s Kitchen and Crown Heights. This ministry is sponsored by Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries out of Metro Baptist Church and allows families access to a low-cost day camp. The camp theme for the summer was The Future is You and Me, and our team spent the week teaching the kids that the choices they make today affect tomorrow. We discussed how ordinary people make extraordinary contributions every day contributions that create lasting change. By making superhero masks, conducting science experiments, reading stories about Ruby Bridges and even composing a song, we sought to plant this thought in their minds and spirits as they prepare to return to school at the end of the month. Here is their song, a song they wrote together and then performed on the last day for their families. The Future is You and Me Someday we ll all be a family And come together in community. So be the best that you can be; You and me, we have to help, Reaching out to people in need, Understanding those Not like me. Someday we ll all be a family And come together in community. So be the best that you can be; We all hope to succeed in our hopes and dreams. But for now let s cherish our memories. What we do today affects tomorrow; The future is what happens next. Someday we ll all be a family And come together in community. So be the best that you can be; It s a great message to share with our own children who are preparing to re-enter the hallways of schools all over the Metroplex. No one is too young or too old to know that they have the ability to make a difference in our world because after all, the future depends on you and me. 5 Giving of Tithes and Offerings During our four-week fall In emphasis that begins today, we are asking everyone in the church to give something to the Unified Budget. If you can give a large amount, give that. If you can give a small amount, give that. If you can give an extra gift, give that. The goal is 100 percent participation, regardless of how much you are able to give. Offertory O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus arr. Ashdown +Offertory Response old 100th Our God is making all things new, a promise that we know is true. Through eyes of faith we long to see a love-transformed community. A place where truth and justice reign and healing triumphs over pain, Where all have dignity and worth and peace is passed throughout the earth. Epistle Reading Ephesians 5:15 20 Mia Wilson / Ava McClung Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. *Solo Be Thou My Vision Parker Jeff Brummel **Anthem Be Thou My Vision Parker Sanctuary Choir Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that thou art. Thou my best thought by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word; I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one. Riches I heed not, nor man s empty praise. Thou mine inheritance, now and always; 5

6 Thou and thou only, first in my heart, High King of heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heav ns joys, O bright Heaven s Sun! 8 The Wilshire Tapestry 100 percent givers James Gallery at 9:40 a.m. Next week is Generosity Sunday in our fall In series. Between now and Sept. 16, everyone in the Wilshire community is asked to give something to the Unified Budget. If you can give a large amount, give that. If you can give a small amount, give that. If you can give an extra gift, give that. The goal is 100 percent participation. Christianity and Empire: From Christ to Constantine Join Pastoral Resident Aaron Coyle-Carr for a two-week discussion about how early Christianity came face-to-face with the dominant world empire of Rome. The class will be offered on Wednesday nights, Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. In the middle of the first century, Christianity was born from a minority religion in an insignificant corner of the mighty Roman Empire. By the middle of the fourth century, Christianity had captured the imagination of that same empire. And by the middle of the fifth, it had become Rome s official religion, linked to the mechanisms of the Roman state. What accounts for the meteoric expansion of Christianity across the Mediterranean world and beyond? How did early Christians navigate the changing relationship between their faith and their politics? What was it like for the church s status to move from persecuted to preferred to powerful? Does this story shed any light on how modern Christians should engage politics? This is the first of a two-part series, with a subsequent study by Matt Dodrill on how Christianity reacted to the rise of Nazi Germany. Wilshire Welcome class Today, Aug. 19, inquirers are invited to a special Wilshire Welcome All Call class. You do not have to be a senior Be a bone marrow donor By Larry Granberry Being a bone marrow donor is not something I had considered until the reason became personal. A year ago, my 12-year-old great-niece, Payton Granberry, was diagnosed with a rare disease called aplastic anemia. The best hope for a cure is a bone marrow transplant. Did you know that 3 out of 4 patients who need a bone marrow transplant will depend on a complete stranger to save their lives? This was the case with Payton, as no one in her immediate family was a bone marrow match. Thankfully, a donor has been found in Europe, and after intense rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, Payton will receive a bone marrow transplant, and hopefully, the gift of a cure. adult to participate in this trip. Full details on the trip are available by following the link at wilshirebc.org/registration. Tony Campolo Sept. 23 Noted author, lecturer and preacher Tony Campolo will be the guest preacher at Wilshire on Sunday, Sept. 23. He will be speaking that week at Wilshire s annual Preaching Practicum. His Sunday morning message will be The Gospel of Hope for a Weary People, calling Christians to become radically committed to the mission of the church at a time when there is much confusion as to what that mission should be. Because one person made the choice to get swabbed, in a process that takes 5 minutes, Payton has a chance to return to her life before diagnosis. My family thanks each of you who already has registered as a donor, and we hope others of you will take the time. Wilshire congregants will have an opportunity to sign up as potential bone marrow donors on Sunday morning, Sept. 9, in James Gallery. Interested adults between the ages of 18 and 55 will be invited to fill out a short form and submit a cheek swab. It will take about 5 minutes. Payton was scheduled to get her transplant Aug. 16. However, more than 14,000 people are still waiting for a match. For more information, contact Parish Nurse Linda Garner at (214) or lgarner@ wilshirebc.org. 10 fall In to Sanctuary Choir One of the ways to fall In to service at Wilshire is to join Sanctuary Choir for the semester. New or renewing singers are invited to commit for the period beginning Aug. 29 and running through Advent. There s a special incentive, as well. In late September through October, Doug Haney will be on sabbatic leave, and Sanctuary Choir rehearsals will be led by Allen Hightower, professor and director of choral studies at the University of North Texas in Denton. Prior to his appointment at UNT, Allen was the first holder of the Weston Noble Endowed Chair in Music at Luther College, where he served as conductor of the renowned Nordic Choir and artistic director of Christmas at Luther. Prior to that, he was professor of music and director of choral activities at Sam Houston State University. He is considered one of the premier choral directors in America today. At Wilshire, he will lead Sanctuary Choir rehearsals for six weeks beginning Sept. 26. Fall singers are invited to join Sanctuary Choir beginning Wednesday, Aug. 29. Rehearsals are at 7 p.m. in Choral Hall. Questions? Contact Doug Haney at dhaney@wilshirebc. org. Or just show up for the Aug. 29 rehearsal.
