2 Preparing for worship Today s Preparing for Worship is drawn from the Wilshire archives, featuring words penned in 2015 by former Pastoral Resident Erica Whitaker, now senior pastor of Buechel Park Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky. She wrote to explain the beginning of Ordinary Time in church life. There is nothing extraordinary about the ordinary. The everydayness of life is not Twitter worthy or any Facebook status sensation. No one is worth following on social media if they only post photos watering the lawn, washing the dishes or walking through the grocery store. We would rather see soulful sunsets, gorgeous grandbabies and powerful protests. Is this not where we find God in the extraordinary moments of life? Ordinary time is the longest season in the church calendar. From May to November we see the color green decorating the Sanctuary for 34 weeks. The season can drag on, numbing our tastes buds that desperately crave the savory flavors of Advent and Easter. Our spiritual palates prefer the rich, robust holiday seasons over the mundane, routine of ordinary time. Is God even around before and after the holidays? The Church, not God, turned Advent and Easter into extraordinary seasons. Jesus was born on an ordinary day like everyone else. If anything, Jesus birth was less than ordinary, taking his first breath in a stable, smelling the everyday animal odors. Jesus also died on an ordinary day like everyone else. Well, not really like everyone else unless you were a Roman criminal flogged and tortured prior to experiencing a humiliating public death. So when and where does God meet us? What is extraordinary about our God is that God is all about the ordinary. God meets us in the commonplace, the average moments. God put on skin, touching humanity in ordinary ways. Jesus rubbed shoulders with the poor, the wealthy, the honest, the crooks, the holy, the unclean, the powerful and the helpless. The Son of God slept, walked, laughed, ate, sat and even wept on this earth. In his book Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life, Thích Nhat Hành wrote, People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don t even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child our own two eyes. All is a miracle. The true miracle is that God meets us in the mundane moments. Perhaps we are so busy rushing through the normal routine of our lives that we miss the everyday miracles proclaiming God s love and grace. Today, will you listen for the voice of the extraordinary God speaking in your ordinary life? 3 June 3, :30 and 11:00 a.m. Second Sunday after Pentecost Chiming of the Hour The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God. In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee arr. Raney Jonathan K. Merrtt and Jeff Brummel, organ/piano duet Opening Sentences Charlie Burgin / Ben Holden This morning we have gathered to worship the Lord, who is immortal, invisible and the only one wise. We acknowledge that God is the giver of life to both the great and the small and that even though God is invisible to our eyes, God is known in our spirits as the true life of all. Scripture teaches that the grass withers and the flowers fade but the word of the Lord stands forever. It is in that hope that we sing today. +Hymn 58 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise st. denio Greeting to Worshipers Tiffany Wright / Jon-Erik Schoellhorn Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate later in the service. We would love to know you were here today. Prayer concerns will be received and prayed for this week when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate. Reading Psalm 139:1 6 Gerald Shilling / Jessica Capps O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely. O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it. O Lord, you have searched me and known me. *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. Hearing devices are available in the Narthex and South Atrium. 3

4 Prayers of the People Mark Wingfield Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, As we forgive those who sin against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. +Hymn 405 Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us bradbury Giving of Tithes and Offerings Although many of us will take summer vacations, the work of the church does not stop. Make sure your generosity to God s work through Wilshire doesn t take an unexpected vacation by using one of our digital giving options at or on the Wilshire app. Choral Offertory *You Shall Go Out with Joy Larson New Song Crysta Jones, accompanist You shall go out with joy and be led forth in peace. For the mountains and hills shall ring out in song And the trees of the field shall clap their hands as you go out with joy. **I Know That My Redeemer Lives Sanctuary Choir Cox I know that my redeemer lives, glory, hallelujah! What comfort sweet this sentence gives, glory, hallelujah! Shout on, pray on, we re gaining ground, glory, hallelujah! The dead s alive and the lost is found, glory hallelujah! He lives, all glory to his name, glory, hallelujah! He lives, my Jesus still the same, glory, hallelujah! Shout on, pray on, we re gaining ground, glory, hallelujah! The dead s alive, and the lost is found, glory, hallelujah! 4

5 +Offertory Response old 100th Our God is making all things new, a promise that we know is true. Through eyes of faith we long to see a love-transformed community. A place where truth and justice reign and healing triumphs over pain, Where all have dignity and worth and peace is passed throughout the earth. LeAnn Hampton +Gospel Reading Mark 2:23 3:6 Aracely Muñoz / Lydia Tucker One sabbath he was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath? And he said to them, Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions. Then he said to them, The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath. Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the withered hand, Come forward. Then he said to them, Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill? But they were silent. He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardness of heart and said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Message Points of Law George Mason Celebration of the Lord s Supper Kevin Gardner-Sinclair / Aaron Coyle-Carr All followers of Christ are invited to partake of the Lord s Supper, whether you are a Wilshire member or not. The bread used this morning is gluten-free. Passing of the Bread Give Me Jesus arr. 6 +Hymn 680 I Then Shall Live finlandia Sharing of Decisions Benediction Postlude Hymn to Joy arr. Travis The flowers on the chancel today are given in honor of Heather Mustain for her endless energy for improving the lives of those who need God s help in our community. The offertory response we are singing during the beginning of Ordinary Time was written by Wilshire s own LeAnn Hampton, who was a participant in the recent hymn-writing class offered on Wednesday nights. All guests are invited to a coffee reception in the James Gallery immediately after the service. Welcome to Wilshire today. If you are a guest with us today, we welcome you warmly to our congregation. We would like to get to know you and tell you more about our church. Please take a Response Card from the pew rack, fill it out and place it in the offering plate when it comes by. Someone to talk with. If you are facing a life challenge and would like to have a spiritual friend to walk alongside you for a season of healing, perhaps you would benefit from a Stephen Minister. 10 Five reasons to register for VBS now 1. It s going to be cool. Imagine Community Hall turned into a biblical marketplace filled with shops, artisans, food and crafts that give kids hands-on understanding of Bible stories as they come to life. 2. Everyone can participate. Because this year s VBS is at night, it s accessible to preschoolers and children with two working parents as well as children of single parents and all households. 3. It s only three days. Rather than taking up an entire week and competing with other summer day camps, this year s VBS runs Sunday night through Tuesday night only. 4. You ll want to bring a friend. Wilshire s VBS is the ideal event for your children to bring their friends along, because there s room for everyone. 5. Kids will have fun learning Bible truths. Children will join their tribe as they visit the marketplace, worship and learn about turning tough times into opportunities to trust God and live courageously. Register today online at wilshirebc.org/registration. VBS is open to preschool children who will have completed a 3-year-old preschool class by June 10 through children who will have just completed sixth grade.
