Donna Spencer Collins What does the Phoenix Rising logo symbolize? In the collective memory of the people of Haverhill is the great conflagration in February The fire destroyed large shoe factories and other businesses which were the heart of the cities livelihood rich and poor. Undaunted the people of Haverhill rallied and the area was redeveloped and named it phoenix row. The First Congregational Church, New Church Start Steering Committee, resonated with this story. The old church building had been sold and the congregation scattered, leaving a small remnant to reimagine A New Church for a New Haverhill. In one of the meetings while kicking around different ideas for a new name, Rev. Wendy Vanderhart had an Aha moment and reminded everyone of the hymn In the Midst of New Dimensions and the line of the song that reads, May your blazing Phoenix Spirit resurrect the Church Again In that moment it was agreed by all the new name of the church would be called Phoenix Rising United Church of Christ. Donna Spencer Collins was asked to design the logo. It is both a hand lifted in praise and an image of the Phoenix Rising Spirit of resurrection. First Congregational Church Haverhill embarked on a unique search and call process in 2009 seeking a person with new church start experience, someone dedicated to the United Church of Christ and all for which it stands. 5 Join us today, following worship in the Chapel, for Soup and Conversation with Barbara and Richard Smith presenting- Courage and Light Exploring Passion, Renewal and Creativity with Jim Brandenburg (Nationally acclaimed writer and educator) and Parker Palmer (National Geographic photographer), a life changing project Brandenburg undertook when he was at the peak of his career yet felt drained of his creative passion for his work. This is a beautiful presentation that will help us all renew, strengthen and nurture our purpose. Readers and Greeters are always needed, contact the office or talk to the Deacons. Looking for Knitting Needles and Yarn The Seaside Parish Knitters are looking for knitting needles and yarn that you might be considering "casting" aside. We continue to knit blankets, shawls, and scarves; and for our military troops: helmet liners, neck gators, and scarves. 8 FIRST PARISH CHURCH, CONGREGATIONAL United Church of Christ, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts WARRANT FOR ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING February 7, 2016 TO: Active Members of the First Parish Church, Congregational, United Church of Christ, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts You are hereby notified to meet in the Church on Sunday, February 7, 2016 immediately following the Worship Service, for the following purposes: To wit: ARTICLE I: To accept the report of the Annual Business Meeting held on February 8, 2015 ARTICLE II: To see what action the Church will take in regard to the budget proposal for 2016 as submitted by the Board of Trustees. ARTICLE III: To hear and act upon the reports of the Financial Secretary, the Board of Trustees, the Investment Committee, the Christian Education Committee, the Diaconate Board, the Missions Committee, the Music Committee, the Stewardship Committee, and the Vitality Committee. ARTICLE IV: To authorize the Board of Trustees to borrow up to $10,000 from the Endowment Fund if needed to support the operations of the church and not as a permanent withdrawal if it becomes necessary during 2016 and until the 2017 Annual Business Meeting. Article V: To authorize the Board of Trustees to allocate donations not received during church services and for which no purpose is specified to church operations or to one of the church endowments as they deem to be in the best interests of the church.
