1 Christ the King Sunday November 25, 2018

2 Preparing for worship Earlier this month, I had the great privilege of traveling to the Holy Land with my fellow Wilshire residents and a number of other Wilshire members. Early on that trip we traveled to the place known as Caesarea Philippi, the place where Jesus asks his disciples who they say he is, and Peter responds, the Messiah. It s a significant moment in the gospel story, and quite a remarkable place to visit. All throughout our trip, we visited remarkable sites that each represented some significant moment in Jesus life, from his place of birth to his place of death. As we journeyed, I began to consider the variety of ways we identify Jesus: as Messiah, as the Christ-child born in a manger, as Savior, as a teacher, as a friend and so on. How often though, I wondered, do we stop and ponder Jesus question for ourselves? Who do we say Jesus is? A few days ago, the residents gathered in the baptistry of the Sanctuary to discuss and practice baptism. We were reminded that in our tradition there is one question asked of each baptismal candidate before they are baptized: What is your confession of faith? Each candidate is then to respond: Jesus Christ is Lord. One more way we identify Jesus as Lord. There are profound theological implications to our confessing Jesus as Lord, yet how often do we stop to consider what those are? What does it mean to call Jesus both Savior and Lord, or Savior and King? This Sunday is Christ the King Sunday. This is the last Sunday of the church year before Advent begins and the church year starts over again. This particular Sunday allows us, the Church, to consider what is means for the Savior of the world to also be the King of a new kind of kingdom, who testifies to the truth. As we prepare for worship, begin by asking who Jesus is to you. Perhaps you might consider which Jesus you ve come to encounter today and what you hope to gain from that holy encounter. In this space, how might you invite yourself into discerning what the truth is that Jesus reveals? Who is Jesus, to you? 3 November 25, :30 and 11:00 a.m. Christ the King Sunday Chiming of the Hour The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God. In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude Praise to the Lord, the Almighty arr. Culli Call to Worship Ride On, King Jesus arr. Hogan Lwazi Hlati / Sanctuary Choir Ride on, King Jesus, ride on, the conquering king. Oh, ride on, King Jesus, ride on. No man can a-hinder thee. I was but young when I begun. No man can a-hinder thee. But now my race is almost done. No man can a-hinder thee. King Jesus rides a milk white horse. No man can a-hinder thee. The river of Jordan he did cross. No man can a-hinder thee. He s the King and the Lord of all. He s the first and the last. Jesus is the Lord of Lords. Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Ride on, King Jesus, ride on. Opening Sentences Hannah Jaggers / Tristan Vathis We gather this morning to declare that there is no other name under heaven or earth by which we must be saved; that Jesus Christ is God s beloved Son by whom all things were created and have their being; that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. And by this declaration, we set aside any other prince or potentate who would demand our allegiance, any other cause or crusade that would contradict the claim of Jesus on our lives. We declare today that Jesus Christ is King and no man can hinder him. +Hymn 339 All Hail the Power of Jesus Name coronation Greeting to Worshipers Tiffany Wright / Joan Hammons Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate when passed and to place the red fabric rose on your lapel or blouse to help others identify you as our honored guest today. Prayer concerns will be received and prayed for this week when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate. *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. 4 Old Testament Reading 2 Samuel 23:1 4 Becky Waterfield / Leigh Ann Brown Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, son of Jesse, the oracle of the man whom God exalted, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the favorite of the Strong One of Israel: The spirit of the Lord speaks through me, his word is upon my tongue. The God of Israel has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: One who rules over people justly, ruling in the fear of God, is like the light of morning, like the sun rising on a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Reflections on Holy Land Trip Prayers of the People Aaron Coyle-Carr and Jared Jaggers Mark Wingfield +Hymn 164 O Sing a Song of Bethlehem kingsfold Giving of Tithes and Offerings Thanksgiving weekend often is the time families and individuals begin making plans for year-end giving. Like most other nonprofits, the church receives a disproportionate percentage of its annual contributions between now and Dec. 31. The work and witness of the church continue every day and every month. Taking stock of your annual giving will help us do all the good we ve said we want to do together this year. Offertory Be Thou My Vision arr. Forrest +Offertory Response old 100th Our God is making all things new, a promise that we know is true. Through eyes of faith we long to see a love-transformed community. A place where truth and justice reign and healing triumphs over pain, Where all have dignity and worth and peace is passed throughout the earth. +Gospel Reading John 18:33 37 LeAnn Hampton / Leanna Coyle-Carr Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answered, Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me? Pilate replied, I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. Pilate asked him, So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4

5 Message Not From Here George Mason +Hymn 159 Fairest Lord Jesus st. elizabeth Sharing of Decisions **Family Dedication We welcome into the life of the church today Thomas Hamilton Lee, son of Thomas and Amy Lee. Through this dedication, the family and the congregation pledge together to raise Hamilton in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, so that when he reaches an appropriate age he may choose for himself to follow Jesus Christ as Savior. Present for the dedication are grandparents Margaret and Joe Kendrick and Susan and Garrett Sherman; aunt and uncle Candice and Jason Kendrick with Micah and Melodee; and out of town friends Kenda Nelson, Vicki Foran, Holly Beier with Emily and Eliana. Benediction Postlude Rejoice, the Lord Is King arr. Hunt The flowers on the chancel today are given in honor of Kathy Alverson for her eternal friendship from the Perry family. All guests are invited to a coffee reception in the James Gallery immediately after the service. Someone to talk with. If you are facing a life challenge and would like to have a spiritual friend to walk alongside you for a season of healing, perhaps you would benefit from a Stephen Minister.
