2 Preparing for worship Everybody. That is the one word that occupies the sign outside our church. That one word is meant to convey to anyone driving down Abrams Road that, no matter what, everybody can find a place of belonging among the fellowship at Wilshire Baptist. What a wonderful idea: that everybody can be accepted here. But I ve been thinking more about acceptance recently, and I ve come to the conclusion that acceptance really is a two-way street. Yes, a person or a group must first decide they are willing to accept any and all people, and that is indeed a significant hurdle. But once a person or group makes that decision, that s not the end. If it were, then acceptance would simply be a one-way street. But there is a second part. Now people need to accept that they are accepted, and sometimes that can be an even bigger obstacle. Here s what I mean. I can decide in my mind to accept you just the way you are, no questions asked, no strings attached. However, if you don t accept that I accept you, then you likely won t feel accepted. In that case, there is nothing more I can do. Acceptance must have a reciprocal quality. One side must be willing to be accepting, and the other side must be willing to be accepted. It sounds simple, but I ve observed that it can be anything but. Some of us have a real problem feeling like we are truly accepted by others. Maybe it s because of past hurts that have been inflicted upon us. Maybe it s because of lies spoken to us by others or even ourselves that we have accepted as truth. Maybe it s because we are afraid to break down the walls we have carefully constructed to keep out the danger, but that really just hold in our pain. At youth camp this summer we took up a practice of speaking important truths to each other in evening worship. In a fashion similar to when we pass the peace after communion, we took time each night to move around the open-air chapel at Camp Mitchell and tell one another the truth. One night we told each other, You are loved beyond measure. Another night it was, You are needed. And on the last night we said to each other, When I look at you I see the face of God. These are truths we need to hear and be told by others, but more than that we need to believe them about ourselves. My hope this morning is that you will believe these things about yourself, and you can accept that you are accepted. 3 July 29, :30 and 11:00 Tenth Sunday after Pentecost Chiming of the Hour The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God. In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude A Prayer Maekelberghe Bill Jernberg, guest organist **Call to Worship Haleluya! Pelo Tsa Rona arr. Nyberg Sanctuary Choir David Nabors, soloist; Shana Gaines, percussion Haleluya! Pelo tsa rona, di thabile kaofela. Haleluya! We sing your praises, all our hearts are filled with gladness. Ke Morena Jeso. Ya re du meletseng, ho tsamaisa evangedi. Christ the Lord to us said: I am wine, I am bread, Give to all who thirst and hunger. O na na le bo mang? Le barutuwa ba hae. Now he sends us all out strong in faith, free of doubt, Tell to all the joyful gospel. Opening Sentences Julie Girards / Sarah Stafford We gather today to turn our attention away from ourselves and toward Jesus, our blessed redeemer. Set aside now all that distracts you from hearing the voice of God in this hour and lifting your voice in praise. Let us turn our attention to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. +Hymn 354 Praise Him! Praise Him! joyful song Greeting to Worshipers Gwin Morris / Gail Brookshire Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate when it is passed later in the service. We would love to know you were here today. Prayer concerns will be received and prayed for this week when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate. *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. Hearing devices are available in the Narthex and South Atrium. 3
4 Psalm Reading Psalm 14 Gayle Lawson / Mary Kay Jackman Fools say in their hearts, There is no God. They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is no one who does good. The Lord looks down from heaven on humankind to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God. They have all gone astray, they are all alike perverse; there is no one who does good, no, not one. Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon the Lord? There they shall be in great terror, for God is with the company of the righteous. You would confound the plans of the poor, but the Lord is their refuge. O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion! When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people, Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad. Prayers of the People Children s Moment Mark Wingfield Leigh Curl +Hymn 17 This Is My Father s World terra patris Giving of Tithes and Offerings When you give to Wilshire s Unified Budget, you support our local mission partner CitySquare in its quest to address homelessness in Dallas. Through CitySquare, your gifts support transitional housing, medical services, mental health services, clothing, job training and more. Your gifts help lift Dallas residents out of homelessness into self-sufficiency and productivity. Offertory Allegro Moderato and Allegro Vivo, Opus 56 Fauré Radiance Michelle Williams and James Michael Williams, pianists +Offertory Response old 100th Our God is making all things new, a promise that we know is true. Through eyes of faith we long to see a love-transformed community. A place where truth and justice reign and healing triumphs over pain, Where all have dignity and worth and peace is passed throughout the earth. LeAnn Hampton Solo Oh the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus arr. Gagliardi George Gagliardi Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus, vast, unmeasured, boundless, free. Rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me. Underneath me, all around me is the current of thy love. Leading onward, leading homeward to thy glorious rest above. 4
5 Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus, spread his praise from shore to shore. How he loves us, ever loves us, changing never, nevermore. How he watches o er his loved ones, died to call them all his own. How for them he intercedeth, watching o er them from his throne. Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus, love of ev ry love the best. Tis an ocean vast of blessing, tis a haven sweet of rest. Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus tis a heaven of heavens to me. And it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to thee. Epistle Reading Ephesians 3:14 21 Jakob Topper / Kevin Gardner-Sinclair For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Message The Prayer George Mason +Hymn 437 How Wide the Love of Christ festal song Sharing of Decisions Benediction Postlude Stand Up and Bless the Lord arr.
