Fifth Sunday after Epiphany February 5, 2017

Preparing for worship This is the fifth Sunday after Epiphany, and we continue to celebrate our LightWork together. Today our communal worship provides us the sacred space to reflect on both our own physical and spiritual hunger as well as those who are hungry in our world. Today we celebrate the Lord s Supper, gathering at a table that offers us the nourishment our bodies and souls are in need of, reminding us that we find God in the most mysterious of ways. Author Sara Miles in her memoir, Take This Bread, recounts her first experience at the Table as a then self-proclaimed atheist in this way, And then we gathered around that table. And there was more singing and standing, and someone was putting a fresh, crumbly bread in my hands, saying, the body of Christ, and handing me the goblet of sweet wine, saying, the blood of Christ, and then something outrageous and terrifying happened. Jesus happened to me. Today we also celebrate an advocate, a man who was instrumental in helping Wilshire find a role and voice participating both globally and locally in hunger alleviation efforts. By helping to establish the World Hunger Offering, Phil Strickland nurtured in congregations like ours a deep sense that if we collaborated together we could help resource on-the-ground ministries in their call to feed hungry people. This past year s Wilshire mission team to Barcelona had the opportunity to visit and serve alongside El Rebost Solidarity de Cerdanyola, a food bank staffed and run by local volunteers who believe in the solidarity of standing with others during moments of crisis, because that is the call of Jesus and the call of the church. Before opening its doors, Pastor David presented to our group a piece of calligraphy art featuring the title of the gospel hymn His Eye is on the Sparrow as a thank you gift for our contribution to the World Hunger Offering, an offering that has allowed their food bank to put food in the hands of those who need it most. It currently hangs in our education wing on the second floor, so the next time you pass, celebrate your part in that story. There was a bishop who once said, There s a hunger beyond food that s expressed in food, and that s why feeding is always a kind of miracle. As we continue in our efforts to feed those who are hungry, I pray we experience the miracle behind the food. Heather Mustain Wilshire Baptist Church 4316 Abrams Road Dallas, Texas (214) Partnered with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship ON THE COVER: Dark Portal, David Clanton, interpreting Psalm 42:3 My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me continually, Where is your God? 2

The Worship of God February 5, :30 and 11:00 a.m. Fifth Sunday after Epiphany Chiming of the Hour The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God. In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light arr. Burkhardt Opening Sentences David Cossum / Sheri Brooks We gather today around the Table of the Lord, sinners and saints alike and at the same time. We hear the words of Jesus: Come unto me and Take and eat. We remember that Jesus is the Bread of Life, just as we acknowledge too many people don t have enough bread for life. In this place today, at this Holy Table, the call to love our neighbors as ourselves and the call to remember the sacrifice of Jesus come together as invitation and command. Come, share the Lord, the one who alone is worthy of our worship and devotion. +Hymn 7 Worthy of Worship judson Greeting to Worshipers Heather Mustain / Tiffany Wright Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate later in the service. We would love to know you were here today. Prayer concerns will be addressed this hour when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate. Presentation of Phil Strickland World Hunger Offering Old Testament Reading Isaiah 58:1 12 George Mason Mark Wingfield Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments, they delight to draw near to God. Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice? Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. Hearing devices are available in the Narthex and South Atrium. 3

bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayers of the People Timothy Peoples / Kevin Sinclair Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, As we forgive those who sin against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Celebration of the Lord s Supper Stephen and Angela Bryant The Bread Drifting Too Far from the Shore Moody The Cup Jesus, Cast a Look on Me Jones Molly Francis and Darren DeMent +The Passing of the Peace May the peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. +Hymn 459 Come, Share the Lord divernon Giving of Tithes and Offerings When you give to Wilshire s Unified Budget, you support world hunger relief through the Phil Strickland World Hunger Offering. But that s only the starting point, because the church budget provides a baseline of giving that is supplemented by today s Souper Bowl of Caring. Your Unified Budget gifts also provide for the presence of Cooperative Baptist Fellowship field personnel around the globe who work in hunger relief ministries. 4

It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
