1 Fifth Sunday of Easter April 29, 2018

2 Preparing for worship On this fifth Sunday of Easter, we Declare our Maker s Praise, which is the last phrase of the beloved hymn This Is My Father s World written as a poem by Maltbie Davenport Babcock. The poet took frequent walks along the Niagara Escarpment to enjoy the overlook s panoramic vista of upstate New York scenery and Lake Ontario. In announcing his walks to his wife, he proclaimed that he was going out to see the Father s world. Years ago, I remember one of my dear senior friends gave me wise advice, which I find to be incredibly hard, Slow down and listen for the birds. Maybe this was what Mr. Babcock was doing. We have several places around our Wilshire campus to sit on a bench and be still, to observe our Father s world and meditate on his goodness. One Wilshire special place is located behind the Parlor. The Columbarium is beautifully landscaped and includes a labyrinth. Walking in this setting, meditating or quoting a certain Scripture is often what our souls need to escape our busy lives and listen for God s voice. This is my favorite time of year because the trees begin budding out and my peonies begin blooming. It s truly amazing how quickly the plants push through the earth and immediately sprout leaves. My heart just about bursts when I begin seeing the pure white flower on my beautiful peonies. They started blooming today. Our lives are often like the flowers. We go through dormant times times of sickness, family struggles, loss of family members and loss of a job. I am sure you could add to this list. I m grateful for fellow pilgrims who walk alongside others during these times. The time of dormancy may take a bit longer than my peonies, but eventually we begin pushing through the soil and before long our lives begin to bloom again. After blooming, we can walk alongside someone who needs our tender care. What a blessing to worship together this morning as we rejoice in Jesus resurrection from the dead. We declare with all nature, Jesus Christ is Lord. Let us sing together in one vibrant voice as we worship together. May the music bring us together; may our song bring peace evermore. Prelude Fanfare Helman **Call to Worship Jubilate Deo Althouse Youth Choir Candy McComb, accompanist Jubilate Deo.* Sing and rejoice. Sing we now in great exultation. Sing we now in one vibrant voice. Sing we now, let all nations hear us. Sing we now, rejoice and sing! Jubilate Deo. Sing and rejoice. May the music bring us together. May our song bring peace evermore. May our voices ring to the heavens. Let the music soar. We sing! Rejoice and sing. Jubilate Deo. *Rejoice in the Lord. Opening Sentences Kristin Boyd / Kirsten Granberry We gather this morning in sure and certain hope of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith and the Savior of the world. We believe that like him, we too will be raised into life eternal upon our confession that Jesus is Lord. We lift our voices to sing of the Christ who defeated death and of our eternal hope that we are heirs of the promise of God the Father through the power of Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit, one God now and forevermore. *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. 4 +Hymn Easter People, Raise Your Voices regent square Greeting to Worshipers Kevin Gardner-Sinclair / Sarah Stafford Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate later in the service. We would love to know you were here today. Prayer concerns will be addressed this hour when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate. Psalm Reading Psalm 22:25 31 Mary Carver / Gayle Grant From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will pay before those who fear him. The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord. May your hearts live forever! All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him. For dominion belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations. To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, and I shall live for him. Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord, and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that he has done it. Children s Moment Aaron Coyle-Carr *Musical Meditation Declare Your Maker s Praise! arr. Larson New Song Crysta Jones, accompanist; Mark McKenzie, soprano saxophone This is my Father s world, and to my listening ears, All nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres. 4

5 This is my Father s world, I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; His hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father s world, the birds their carols raise; The morning light, the lily white declare their maker s praise. This is my Father s world, he shines in all that s fair; In the rustling grass I hear him pass, he speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father s world, O let me ne er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet. This is my Father s world, why should my heart be sad? The Lord is King! Let the heavens ring, God reigns, let the earth be glad! Declare your maker s praise! Prayers of the People Mark Wingfield +Hymn 409 What a Friend We Have in Jesus converse Giving of Tithes and Offerings Your gifts to Wilshire s Unified Budget allow us to serve as a light to the community by opening our doors to diverse groups of people, including the New Song community choir, which brings together senior adults from about 20 Dallas congregations. In addition to singing monthly at Wilshire, the choir sings in the community regularly. Offertory All Nature Sings arr. Fedak +Offertory Response lasst uns erfreuen Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures here below. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all good gifts. Praise Jesus Christ whose power uplifts. Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Epistle Reading 1 John 4:7 21 Darren DeMent / Shannon Nadalini Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world. God abides in those who 5

6 confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us. Those who say, I love God, and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Message A Fearless Heart George Mason +Hymn 425 How Firm a Foundation foundation Sharing of Decisions Benediction Postlude How Firm a Foundation arr. Hamlin All guests are invited to a coffee reception in the James Gallery immediately after the service. The flowers on the chancel today are given in honor of Mark Wingfield for all that he does for our community of faith and for the kingdom of God, from the Perry family. Welcome to Wilshire today. If you are a guest with us today, we welcome you warmly to our congregation. We would like to get to know you and tell you more about our church. Please take a Response Card from the pew rack, fill it out and place it in the offering plate when it comes by. Someone to talk with. If you are facing a life challenge and would like to have a spiritual friend to walk alongside you for a season of healing, perhaps you would benefit from a Stephen Minister.
