Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany February 3, 2019

Preparing for worship Today is Wilshire s annual Souper Bowl Sunday. For many years, Wilshire has offered a soup luncheon after church services on Super Bowl Sunday to raise funds for hunger and poverty alleviation efforts all over the world. Historically those funds had been given to the Texas Baptist World Hunger Offering through the Baptist General Convention of Texas, an offering created by the late Wilshire member Phil Strickland, a Baptist giant in both faith and deed. The BGCT would disperse all funds received to ministries who were working toward eradicating hunger and poverty. When Wilshire was asked to leave the BGCT, we also were told our World Hunger Offering dollars no longer would be accepted. So last year the Missions Committee immediately voted to rename our offering as the Phil Strickland World Hunger Offering and we became, for the first time, responsible for dispersing all funds raised. Our recipient last year was the African Inland Church of Tanzania, and funds were used to build a dormitory for 100 girls in Nyamakombu, Tanzania. This year, our hope is to keep the funding local and to partner alongside hunger alleviation efforts in our own city. At our luncheon today, you will receive a profile card of someone in our city who has accessed the Wilkinson Center s food pantry, and we will watch a short Faces of Hunger video that highlights the stories of our neighbors who are food insecure. This week alone I had the opportunity to advocate for the continued summer food services for 60 local children at the Verandas and hand-delivered groceries to a senior adult woman who had not eaten in two days and had no way of getting to a grocery store. The statistics on food insecurity and hunger in North Texas are staggering; the stories are even more heart-wrenching. No mother should have to decide between food on the table or heat in the apartment; no child should have to be made to learn without a hearty breakfast; no senior adult should be left to starve in her apartment. We have work to do toward eradicating systems that allow people to go without when there is plenty. And like Jeremiah, from our Scripture reading today, we can no longer justify ourselves and say, But I am just a boy. Instead may we continue to allow God to work through us and be conduits of God s grace in both word and deed. I hope you will join us downstairs today. I mean who is playing in the Super Bowl anyway? 3 February 3, :30 and 11:00 a.m. Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany Chiming of the Hour The people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God. In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches. Prelude Meditation on thaxted arr. Callahan Opening Sentences Abby Veach / Jim Hancock What have you come to church seeking today? Whoever you are, wherever you ve come from, whatever your faith background, whatever burdens or joys you bring, know this: God is here. As we sing together, as we pray, as we listen and wait, we are not alone. In the bread and cup, we will taste the presence of God. In words spoken and sung, we will hear the voice of God. God is here. Hymn God Is Here! beecher 3

Greeting to Worshipers Ryan Wilson / Matt Dodrill Guests are invited to take a Response Card from the pew rack, complete it and place it in the offering plate when it is passed later in the service. We would love to know you were here today. Prayer concerns will be received and prayed for this week when listed on an intercessory prayer card from the pew rack and placed in the offering plate. Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 1:4 10 Julie Girards / Carol Ann McElhannon Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then I said, Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy. But the Lord said to me, Do not say, I am only a boy ; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord. Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. +Hymn 509 Trust and Obey trust and obey Prayers of the People Mark Wingfield Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, As we forgive those who sin against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Giving of Tithes and Offerings In addition to our regular tithes and offerings, today we focus our attention on the world s hungry people by giving over-and-above gifts to the Phil Strickland World Hunger Offering. This is one of three annual exceptions to our Unified Budget appeal, with all designated gifts going to hunger initiatives chosen by the Missions Committee. You are invited to give through the offering plate this morning or to attend the Souper Bowl of Caring luncheon in Community Hall. *8:30 worship service / **11:00 worship service +All congregants who are able are invited to stand. Hearing devices are available in the Narthex and South Atrium. 4

Choral Offertory *Aleluia Brasileira (Brazilian Alleluia) Manuel Shekinah **My Song in the Night Sanctuary Choir Johnson O Jesus, my Savior, my song in the night, Come to us with thy tender love, my soul s delight. Unto thee, O Lord, in affliction I call, My comfort by day and my song in the night. O why should I wander, an alien from thee, Or cry in the desert thy face to see? My comfort and joy, my soul s delight, O Jesus, my Savior, my song in the night. +Offertory Response Glory Be to the Father gloria patri Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, World without end. Amen. Amen. +Gospel Reading Luke 4:21 30 Linda Garner / Sheri Brooks Then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, Is not this Joseph s son? He said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And you will say, Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet s hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Message Faithful Betrayal George Mason 5

Celebration of the Lord s Supper The Bread Look Over Your Shoulder Molly Shepard, vocals; Darren DeMent, guitar and vocals George Mason Heard Look over your shoulder and tell me what s coming. Tell me, what is the bogey that you re so afraid of? The eyes in the back of our heads can persuade That just for the moment mercy has swayed. Look over your shoulder and tell me what s coming. Look into your sad eyes and tell me what you see. What is left of the child who is hiding behind them? Who longs to be laughing in places of light? Who knows that the morning will follow the night? Look into your sad eyes and tell me what you see. If you must be afraid, be afraid of yourself. For being afraid of the fear you have felt You will weather well in a climate of love. It takes more than your passion and more than your pain For the rock of forgiveness to melt in the rain. Look over your shoulder and tell me what s coming. Look into your sad eyes and tell me what you see. Look over your shoulder and tell me what s coming. The Cup Mercy Now Amanda Mintz, Molly Shepard, vocals; Michael Prysock, guitar; Darren DeMent, mandolin Gauthier My father could use a little mercy now. The fruits of his labor fall and rot slowly on the ground. His work is almost over, it won t be long, he won t be around. I love my father; he could use some mercy now. My brother could use a little mercy now. He s a stranger to freedom, he s shackled to his fear and his doubt. The pain that he lives in, it s almost more than living will allow. I love my brother; he could use some mercy now. My church and my country could use a little mercy now. As they sink into a poisoned pit, it s going to take forever to climb out. They carry the weight of the faithful who follow them down. 6

I love my church and country; they could use some mercy now. Every living thing could use a little mercy now. Only the hand of grace can end the race toward another mushroom cloud. People in power, they ll do anything to keep their crown. I love life, and life itself could use some mercy now. Yeah, we all could use a little mercy now. I know we don t deserve it, but we need it anyhow. We hang in the balance, dangle tween hell and hallowed ground. And every single one of us could use some mercy now. Every single one of us could use some mercy now. +The Passing of the Peace May the peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. +Hymn 458 Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ linstead Sharing of Decisions Benediction Postlude Voluntary on beecher arr. Parks The flowers on the chancel today are given in memory of Joseph Michael Furney by Nancy, William and Jonathan Furney. All guests are invited to a coffee reception in the James Gallery immediately after the service. Welcome to Wilshire today. If you are a guest with us today, we welcome you warmly to our congregation. We would like to get to know you and tell you more about our church. Please take a Response Card from the pew rack, fill it out and place it in the offering plate when it comes by. Someone to talk with. If you are facing a life challenge and would like to have a spiritual friend to walk alongside you for a season of healing, perhaps you would benefit from a Stephen Minister.
